So love me now, hell is coming

It's possible this is well-known within the fandom, but somehow I missed it and I want to make sure no one else does. It's a music video for Band of Brothers by LithiumDoll, aka one of the best vidders of all time. I was astonished to see it exists, and unsurprised but very moved to find that it is a tragic and uplifting piece of exquisite art.

Download it here

I just - wow.

Oh my god. I remember when that was posted, and I meant to watch it, but never got around to it. Now I'm crying. Absolutely incredible vid. In some ways, I feel like I can watch the series for the first time again when it's put together in a new way, and even when I recognized a scene from the first still, it hit me so much harder than it has in a long time. Thanks for the link.

That's the magic of music videos, and why they're really my favorite form of fannish art. They take the original material and really work an alchemic transformation - the same source can yield videos comic, tragic, or sweet in the hands of different vidders using different songs. So, yes - this video is one of the best examples I have seen of that, a reframing of the entire canon so that even when the source is beyond familiar, it manages to strike new, raw emotional chords.

Glad to have brought your attention to it hon. ♥

This one is new to me, and oh my god, it huuuuurts. It's so-- [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes is right, I know every scene and every shot, but it's put together into something new, something stark and stripped down and raw.

It's startling, it's unpadded, and it's utterly gorgeous. Wow.

Thank you for linking it.

Wow. I was quite cynical about this - I don't go in for fanvids much, and well, if anybody tells me something will make me cry I automatically harden. And at first I thought, oh yeah, sad song, sweeping strings, over-brightened visuals, all the tricks... and then it got me.

I've seen Band of Brothers all the way through now what, seven or eight times now, and never has the bombing of Eindhoven affected me as emotionally as it did when she cut straight from the celebrations to the town burning (and I think now I'm going to find that episode much harder to watch). And somehow she timed Skip and Penkala's deaths perfectly with the crescendo in the music that I still have a lump in my throat that's not going away.

There's some visual tricks in this I've not seen in any other fanvids before, either, in particular superimposing one image over another for effect. You weren't lying - this is astonishing. Edit: Oh, yes, and a point I was thinking off while watching it but then forgot - this feels like a memorial. This is just my reading, but it feels like she's made a powerful anti-war statement out of a series that, despite itself, sometimes glorifies war.

Aw, I'm glad you gave it a chance even though fanvids aren't your cuppa! They are absolutely my favorite type of fanart, and this is a particularly sterling example from a master.

I think that you should give fanvids more of a chance, because a lot of the things you just talked about are tools that are common to all of the talented vidders. The whole idea is to draw immediate relationships between images that have never existed side-by-side before - so, the parade and the bombing are juxtaposed, and that's where the emotional whammy comes from, absolutely. And I totally agree that the moment of Muck and Penkala's death is by far the most affecting of the video. Sniff. :(

That's a lovely and, I think, entirely fair reading of the video. It may be anti-war, but it's also incredibly pro-soldier, particularly with the circular imagery of them running and supporting each other. It definitely highlights and draws out the conflict I have in myself - war is unarguably horrible, but the bonds it forges are one of a kind and riveting.

I'm glad that the video was able to overcome your self-professed cynicism. :)

Oh wow. I like fanvids as a medium, but a vid has to be really something exceptional for me to download it, and I knew 30 seconds in that this was one of those exceptional ones. I must have missed it too when it made the rounds in comms, so THANK YOU for posting this!
