Who makes you sing and dance?

So. Bandom is a fandom about bands. And I think it's pretty impressive how much we pay attention to the music, but it's also obvious that the boys themselves steal the thunder a lot of the time. I personally was a bandom music fan before anything else, for all the big names - I listened to Fall Out Boy all through high school, probably about 3 years before I even knew who Patrick Stump was. I loved Panic! my freshman year of college - Brendon who? And I listened to The Black Parade for six months before more than vaguely acknowledging MCR's freaky singer. (I'M SORRY GEE ILU)

I know that there are definitely people who fangirl some bandboys without particularly loving their music, which is totally cool, these guys are awesome and so's the fic! But I'm curious about how effective bandom is at converting people to the music... so I'm gonna do a poll!

I want to know whose MUSIC you're a fan of. That is, you own an album or more by a band, have listened to it enough to be familiar, and genuinely LIKE the music. I wouldn't call myself a fan of The Cab - I have their album, listened to it maybe twice, but I don't particularly like it. Just as an example. I would say, on the other hand, that I'm a fan of We The Kings, since the album I downloaded a week ago already has 12 plays.

Satisfy my curiosity, o bandom! (Non-bandom people are more than welcome to answer too!)

I remember listening to Panic's first album a few years ago, not knowing who they were at all, and being pretty turned off by "Fever". "Pretty.Odd." is a lot more to my musical taste, because "Fever" has too many synths.

I've been listening to AAR for at least 2 years now, and didn't have a clue what they looked like until ~2 months ago.

MARK FUCKING ROSE NEEDS TO COME OUT WITH AN ALBUM. D:

Fall Out Boy won me over with their 2nd and 3rd albums. I mean, I got most of these musics all at once! So.

So okay, I think I need to elaborate on this. Musically I come from a place where pretty much anything mainstream most of all MCR and FOB are looked down upon as emo and teenybopperish and bad. And before I got into bandom at all I've been sort of meh about it too, not gonna lie.

Bandom sort of made me listen to the music, because hello, part of canon and it did a lot to convert me musically. It also made me a LOT more tolerant towards music that's not part of the sense of hip and indie I live with in RL.

I pretty much like most of MCR now, ESPECIALLY The Black Parade, even though that's not my music at all. Same for FOB although there are more songs I'm not that much into here and some I'm really, really fond of. TAI and Phantom Planet I just like on a sort of basis where I like having the music on in the background and enjoy it. With Cobra it's 50/50 and I think I need to spend a bit more time to actively listen to it. Hm. Panic. I loved Panic before I was even in online fandom at all, it's the only bandom related CD I actually own so yeah. I can't really say much about the other bands you listed because I've never listend to the music, although The Hush Sound is on top of my list of music to get.

HAI! This ramble is your own fault you made me answer the poll! <3

For me, how I got into bandom was by listening to the music and I loved the music first before the boys. I remember people on my flist who were into bandom talking about Panic and I was curious and listened to Fever then that led me to listen to FOB and I got sucked in from there and realized how generally awesome all the bands are as people too. idk but see I've never had that where I listened to the bandom band long before I discovered bandom, it all happened at the same time!
Their music is so important to me though. The bandom bands I love most i.e. FOB, MCR, Panic, TAI, their music is my favourite and I'm not ashamed to say it eventhough a lot of people do look at you funny when you admit that your favourite music is MCR or FOB. I think probably the only bandom band that I love more as people than as music is Cobra Starship. I mean I LIKE their music, it's really fun but I probably wouldn't love it as much as I do if I wasn't in love with each member of Cobra too. If that makes sense! But generally no, I don't love any bandboys without loving their music also.

For example: I listened to Panic's first album a kajillion times, but I've only skimmed through the recent one. Sorry boys, I am more of a techno fan! But I totally still read Panic fic.

I had Three Cheers and TBP years before I got into reading fic about MCR. I'll still totally get their new albums even if I fall out of the fandom.

I kind of toppled into TAI, and then The Hush Sound and fell in love with Greta's voice and the timeless songs. Accidental fandom, woo!

I'm resisting the urge to get long and rambly, only because I don't have time. :D I love a lot of the non-bandom FBR bands that we mostly only see on tour, Motion City Soundtrack in particular, and I like the new bands I've only just heard on the mixtape, like Hey Monday, Rocket to the Moon, and Four Year Strong.

Okay, now that I have time, a ramble: I listen to pretty much anything I can sing along to, which is everything except rap, screaming, and particular voices that I can't stand. Anything else in the poll that I didn't tick is because I've never had the chance to listen to it. Since I'm not as interested in MCR musically or fannishly, I haven't really checked out bands that are associated with them like Pencey Prep, Thursday, TBS, The Used, MSI, Leathermouth, etc. I also haven't heard enough of We the Kings or Jack's Mannequin, but I will confess to liking Metro Station. So far I have refused on principle to listen to Paramore, but I'm sure one day I will.

If I have to narrow it down, though, I can look at the bands I've liked enough to give money to, which would be Panic, FOB, The Hush Sound, The Cab, TAI..., and Empires. Plus I still might buy TBPID and whatever the next opportunity to spend money on MCR is.

Is that enough boring rambling, do you think? :D

I'm pretty sure that you saw my loooong and rambly post about Gym Class Heroes and FOB a couple of weeks ago, but just in case:

I started out being threatened on a really basic level by Gym Class, because it wasn't 'my kind of music', but really loved the guys in the band. Just under a year later, I'd say they're one of those bands I fucking LOVE the sound of most of all, but I never would have given it a chance if it hadn't been for bandom.

FOB is the flipside, in that I really like some of their music, but they're not really. Huh. I don't care about them like I care about some of the other bands.

I'm super fond of The Cab live, but haaaate the fact that they sound like the freaking Jonas Brothers on Whisper War, and there's a few Pencey Prep songs I fucking LOVE but I'm neutral on most of their stuff.

I genuinely love MCR's music, but I'm not sure how I would feel about it if it weren't connected to the band and their intensity. I would probably still like it, but again, not sure if I would love it enough to be getting it tattooed onto my wrists if it weren't their stupid little faces, you know?

Bands I really like who didn't make your tickybox poll, hm. I reallllly like Motion City Soundtrack (and reallllly hate their fans omg) and the more I listen to Amanda Palmer's solo stuff the more I like her and the Dresden Dolls an absurd amount. Also, no lie, I like Katy Perry's sound. (Now if we could just get her to do something about her lyrics, please god.)

I fucking adore Cobra, and know I would have loved their stuff even without the additional influence of bandom, and I'm one of those fangirls who reaaaaalllly loved the sound of Fever. It's so damn catchy! [Honestly, I grew up on the music that the Panic boys have been getting baked to for the last couple of years, but I wouldn't love Pretty. Odd. if it weren't them. I can't help it, it's just kinda every song blends into the next one for me. Except for Folkin' Around.]

WOW. Shutting up now.

I heard Esteban in fall of 2006 and was hooked from then on. I hadn't seen them on MTV, I didn't know who they were at all. I just really liked their music.

My best friend got my into Fall Out Boy, a little before FUTCT got huge. She also introduced me to The Black Parade in April/May 2006 and I fell in love with the album immediately. I remember really, really liking House Of Wolves and Mama the best. I had only had a vague idea of MCR as "that band with the brothers who did that awkward PETA interview" or something.

It all kind of snowballed from there. I got into bandom and heard of the rest of the FBR bands & satellites and like most of them legitimately for their music just as much as or more than I like the dudes themselves. I have always loved the music before loving the guys, though, with the exception of TAI. It took a LOOONG time of finding all five of then hilariously rad before Santi grew on me.

I have about a bajillion albums zipped that I haven't listened to yet, so my answers are only partially right! But I think what you're asking is absolutely interesting. I listened to Fever obsessively for about a year before even knowing what the boys looked like. And I had a casual interest in FOB and MCR from the mainstream stuff in the media. And then bandom happened. I've been listening to AAR at every possible free minute since last week. I think I'm a fan, wouldn't you say?

[identity profile] snuffkin.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
MCR is what introduced me to bandom. I was a big fan of Green Day before and I read a lot of fic about them but the term bandom came up with MCR (I still don't get to what bandom exactly relates to lol Is it just a circle of special bands, is it if you're fan of a band in general IDK) anyway, I downloaded LotMS and fell in love with them AND their music.

Same goes for the Panic boys. Esp. Pretty.Odd I love the whole album to pieces. The Empires album is just made of awesome ♥ MSI is a band I had to give a chance. I had to listen to them a few times before I liked them but now I'm hooked :D (I actually don't care about them aaas much. I mean they're pretty and funny and awesome but I'm not looking for news about them on a regular basis). TAI ... I think I'm fangirling TAI more because of the boys :/ Their albums are okayish. They're not bad but their music just doesn't have the impact that MCR or Panic had on me :( It's just nice to listen to.

The Hush Sound is something I'm getting into right now. I'm not sure whether I like their music or just some songs. I have to listen to them again. Same goes for Leathermouth. I'm not sure yet. :D

Gym Class revoked my love for hip-hop lol I actually really like most of their songs.

So all in all I'm a fan of their music and the awesome boys are just a bonus :D I couldn't care less about those bandom bands whose music I don't like.

[identity profile] skyfalling.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a fan of the music long before I ever knew anything about the band members, and even now, being a fan of the music is a prerequisite to being fannish about anything else (an exception would probably be All Time Low, who are precious and wonderful but I kind of can't stand their music).

Like, I've been listening to TAI since 2006 (Almost Here was on rotation daily for almost three months), but I only started really learning about the members about two months ago. And I adored Panic, MCR, The Used, Phantom Planet, Cobra, and Empires musically long before I ever knew what any of them looked like. I think what helped me get into bandom as a fandom so easily is that I genuinely do enjoy most of the music. If I had to choose between listening to the bands and reading/writing fic about them or participating in the fandom, I'd choose the music, hands down. (Mostly because that's what I did for years, and still do in a lot of cases.)

RE: The Cab: They are fantastic live and when they're not being so overproduced as to make me cringe. :') I own Whisper War, but I listen to the demos and live versions of their songs more often than not.

(Whoops! Forgot to add AAR and Sing It Loud! And All Time Low, if they count. Also, Steel Train, if they count.)

I, honestly, am probably fondest, musically, of Brand New and Straylight Run. Brand New, specifically, is one of my all time favorite bands. Lyrically, I am in love with them, pretty much. The Long Island fandom has mostly died off, I think, but I'd still count them as bandom anyway.

I've listened to My Chem and The Used since high school, but I only started listening to the rest of these bands because of bandom. This is true even if I'm not that interested in reading fic about the bandpeeps, like with The Hush Sound, but I wouldn't have heard of them in the first place if not for bandom.

Some of the bands I didn't check off I'll still listen to. I mean, I'll listen to most of the bands on the list, or like assorted songs, but I wouldn't consider myself a fan of their music in general, if that makes any sense?

I don't think there are any bands on this list that I'd read fic about and not listen to their music, though. I think I have pretty broad taste.

(Also, Mark Rose needs to have a real album as SOON AS FUCKING POSSIBLE. And I need to see Steel Train against really soon.)

My second favourite band after MCR are Green Day.

Seeing as My Chem came into the spotlight for me when they released TBP, and Green Day were about to go on their break, I'm wondering how many people on my flist love Green Day too, and are waiting for some news until they immerse themselves in that fandom once again.

[personal profile] splits_thesky 2008-08-27 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of these I was torn about, because, while I do like a couple of their songs, I don't actually consider myself an active fan. It's more like, if they're on the radio or something, I'll be quite happy to listen, but I'm not going to go buy their albums or anything.
All the bands I ended up checking off were, actually, ones I got into like you - music first - only I left out Panic, because, once I actually got into bandom, I got really attached to Panic!, you know, Fever-era, and even though I thought, and really hoped, it'd end up differently, I just - can't take Pretty. Odd., exclamation-less Panic.

[identity profile] candidlily.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I listened to Panic for about a year before I knew who any of them were, thanks mostly to you. :D You provided the music and I went with it! \o/ And then I vaguely knew who the people were (false: I knew who Brendon and Ryan were, ahaha) and listened to the music pretty obsessively. And then I added on Fall Out Boy, again not really knowing who was in the band except for Pete Wentz. After I finally went to my first bandom concert, Panic on HCT, I decided I 1) wanted to know all there was to know about this band, and 2) wanted to hear more music like this. And now I'm here. I listen to pretty much every band you listed, but I only checked the ones where I really know the songs.

[identity profile] foxxcub.livejournal.com 2008-08-28 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I've been listening to FOB since FUTCT came out; I remember hearing a radio DJ talking about Pete, and for a long time after that I assumed Pete Wentz was their lead singer (like most people do. D:) Actually, giving bandom a chance at all came from me liking FOB's music. And I also had Three Cheers when it first came out (I saw the video for "Helena" and was like *____*), although I didn't listen to the whole thing. Then I fell into bandom, and now I listen to every song. :)

As far as Panic's concerned, I would've never listened past "Sins" had I not gotten into the fandom. I've always thought it was a weak song, and I still think it's one of the weakest songs off Fever.
