Um. Who's obsessed? Oh that's right, me.

So a little more about Tigana, more specific this time because I decided I wanted to have my thoughts down for future reference. Don't look behind the cut if you haven't read it!

The thing that frustrates me the MOST is - BAERD NEVER FOUND DIANORA. He was RIGHT THERE and she WATCHED HIM kill Rhamanus (which, OUCH) and then the stupid girl has to go and drown herself!!! I was tearing my hair out in frustration. I was totally picturing some kind of intense, tearful reunion with so many conflicting emotions, because they LOVE each other, good god do they love each other, but she has essentially betrayed their home, the cause that Baerd has been fighting for his whole life. I would have been really really fascinated to see that play out. But Kay doesn't really go that deep into relationships, which is kind of disappointing.

And then Baerd and Alessan. They had some lovely moments, but I would have really really liked to see a conversation between them from Baerd's point of view (since we never get Alessan's - which is odd, since arguably he's the main character). Kay kept referring to Baerd as "the only brother of Alessan's soul," but I would have liked to see that developed with more than meaningful looks and sweeping phrases.

Also? I wanted SOMETHING of Baerd's reaction to either finding Naddo or Naddo's death. Because that TOO was built up, and it got paid off very slightly (in the whole tavern thinking they were gay when they reunited, HEE! I was amused) but then never capitalized upon. Never were Baerd and Naddo said to be talking together or even near each other after that first embrace. And then Naddo dies with an arrow to the heart, while thanking Baerd for saving him, and okay, OUCH, that hurt a LOT, but we didn't see any of Baerd's emotions in the aftermath. I really wanted to.

Y'know, I could totally fanfic this book. I'd almost want to but I know no one would read it. I just wish some existed for *me* to read.

I liked the conflict that came from painting Brandin as a sympathetic character, instead of just "the evil guy". I had to keep reminding myself of what terrible things he had done in order to keep really rooting for the good guys. We see him through Dianora's eyes, and she loves him, and it's easy to see why. He is quite a man. But he is also a tyrant, and that was even before Stevan was killed and he exacted his revenge on Tigana. So. Not exactly a good man. But he has such FIRE to him. *sighs*

Y'know, I really loved Scelto, I did, until the VERY END. HE DIDN'T TELL THEM ABOUT VALENTIN!!! And I think that's what grates the most, because my god, that broke me. I read the bit where Rhun is revealed to be the maimed, subjugated Prince of Tigana, Alessan's FATHER, and I nearly burst into tears (I was at work, or else I really WOULD have burst into tears). That is just... the most horrific and heartbreaking thing in the entire book. And then Valentin gets his revenge and that is so deserved and beautiful and tragic at the same time but no one knows of it. Augh. As soon as he was revealed to be Valentin I started anticipating his reunion with Alessan, but NO. Argh argh argh! Couldn't you have given us SOMETHING Kay? Something to cling to? *SIGH*

And then the ending. Oh the ending. The effing riselka! Here's what the rhyme says about men and riselkas:

One man sees a riselka
His path forks there
Two men sees a riselka
One will die
Three men see a riselka
One is blessed, one forks, and one dies

So. WHO DOES WHAT??? I mean, that is clearly setting up for a sequel right there, but as far as I know there isn't one! *dramatic sigh* I think the obvious answer would be Baerd is blessed, Devin's path forks (I mean, he was just listing a million differenet things he wants to do), and Sandre dies (he is old, after all). But I have a feeling that were Kay to write it, that wouldn't be how things turned out at all.

Well. I guess I have a love/hate relationship with this book. It didn't give me what I'm so used to focusing on now (the intricate details of interpersonal relationships) but it gave me a wonderful adventure and heartwrenching story peopled with brilliant characters. As usual!
