SPN 1x06 Skin thoughts
May. 27th, 2006 02:51 amSo I'm rewatching all of Supernatural, because I simply can't get enough of this show and I'm absolutely loving going through already knowing everything I do about the boys. I haven't said much about it, but I feel like talkin now.
The scene with not!Dean talking to tiedup!Sam is really, really poignant and heartbreaking. It says so much that the only time we hear anything about what Dean wants for himself is from the mouth of evil. Dean never once again mentions being jealous of Sam, or having dreams - the only thing he says he wants is his family, together. And while I think Dean really does want that, I think that deep down, he would like to have a normal life. But everyone has dreams they know aren't going to come true, and I think that the shapeshifter is mistaking (or manipulating, for the sake of messing with Sam's head) them for what Dean actually WANTS. Instead, I think that Dean has resigned himself to the fact that hunting is going to be his life, and more than that he's accepted it, so he's focused solely on his other greatest desire, to have his family be whole and together. But even so, even with the shapshifter perverting Dean's emotions, I do think it is true that "He sure got issues with [Sam]." Because how can he not be resentful of Sam for abandoning him like that? But the shapeshifter makes it seem that Dean hates Sam, when really the truth is that Dean is angry at Sam because he LOVES him so fucking much. I think he's more jealous of the people that got to share those years at Stanford with Sam than of Sam for getting that taste of "normal".
I also have to say that Jensen blows my mind in this episode. Not!Dean seems an awful lot like Dean, but he's also subtly different. It's less subtle in the scene by the trunk - "Dude you know me!" is very ooc, though "What do you want me to do, cry?" is so hilariously delivered - but in the whole talk with Sam, there's just something off about him. And that's so right and perfect because while this thing might have Dean's body, voice, and memories, he's NOT Dean, and Jensen conveys that perfectly.
Another interesting thing I noted - the "perks" of the job are mentioned twice in the episode, once by Dean and once by not!Dean. Dean is referring, directly, to the gun he hands to Sam, and indirectly to all the awesome kick-assing they get to do. Not!Dean clarifies perks as: "I meet the nicest people! Like little Becky." I just thought it was interesting that that word would be used twice, and I'm not really sure what it's supposed to mean - any thoughts?
When the boys are getting out of their bonds, they're musing that maybe the shapeshifter kept THEM alive to download Dean's thoughts. I highlight THEM because - why both? Why not kill Sammy? Or - why not torture Sammy, like he did to the women? cause Sam's definitely a loved one... though not a pretty little female one. Maybe the shapeshifter has Mommy issues. ANYWAYS. That's not the point. Dean and Sam keep saying "maybe that's why it's keeping US alive" and I'm just amused at how they automatically lump themselves into one unit, like the shapeshifter needs Sam because he's SO integral to Dean, they're that connected. Oh man. This really is the SamandDean show *loves*
*wibbles* And Jensen continues to slay me. When not!Dean is talking to Becky, he's getting all depressed and mopey, and he says "close to no one" and his voice cracks and augh. Jensennnnn.
I don't like Becky. She just annoys me in general. But HOW does she say no to Dean Winchester??? I mean, besides the fact that he's being a little creepy, and oh yeah he's not Dean, but STILL. Silly girl.
The transformation? EW. EW EW EW. Far too long and drawn out and unnecessary. *shudders*
Boys running in sync! (Okay, yes, these thoughts are quickly degenerating into squee. I'm sorry!)
"Your brother's got a lotta good qualities. You should appreciate them more than you do." - Slashiest. Line. Ever. And also true.
This fight blows my MIND. Jensen and Jared are amazing. They should fight more often (the fight in the pilot? *fans self* I LOVE how that is shot.).
"It must be lonely." "Aw, no it's not so bad." Three guesses as to who he looks at when he says that. LOVE, my friends. LOVE.
And and and the lingering looks in the car at the end! *happy sigh* You know, I forget how many little brotherly/ love moments like that there are throughout the show. Even the not-the-best episodes (Wendigo, for one) are chock full of them, and therefore I can watch them all without ever getting tired. I remember the big ones, looking back, but rewatching reminds me that there's one practically every 5 minutes. These boys love each other so much - it's clearly why I watch the show. I know that's true of a lot of people, but it's just so fun to keep experiencing that.
A fun bit - when Dean peels out of the gas station at the beginning (really fast! Hee) you can already see rubber marks from when he'd peeled out in other takes. I was amused ^_^ Also? The Impala is fucking sexy, my god.
When I was watching the Pilot the other day, my brother caught part of the beginning, when Dean says goodnight to Sammy (everybody with me now - AWWWW) and he went "Wait, Sam's younger?" I was all... o.OOO YES. cause my brother's seen all the way through Shadows, and he didn't know that??? Uhhhhkay. Things like that remind me that not everyone actually pays attention when they watch TV, and fundamental details like that can in fact be missed. But still. What??
One thing I'm really enjoying about re-watching is that now I know almost all the music, because I downloaded it and listened to it. So when a song starts playing, I know it and can start boppin and getting into the mood and it's just so much fun.
