BOTH of them are so desperate for the other's forgiveness. I mean, if you think about it, they're all they have in the world, and if there's tension, that means their world is falling apart!! So they're like OMG PLEASE FORGIVE ME I LOVE YOU!!! and it's the cutest thing EVER.
