Well part of the impression was actual personal experience - I interviewed with him for his summer position, and he was vaguely terrifying. He wasn't overtly hostile or anything, I just was left completely unsettled. So I think what you say about him treating his own students/workers differently is probably 100% true. Interesting! I bet I'm in for a real treat as far as some professors go, being a girl in chemistry. The department here is in general pretty great, everyone's very friendly and encouraging.But oh boy, grad school, can't WAIT! /sarcasm

My presentation last summer was much more intensive - it was formal, 20 minutes, oral powerpoint presentation to a room of 25 or so people, only a few of whom I actually knew at all. I was nearly sick with apprehension then. But I pulled it off really well, I was very proud of myself :)
