Tonight I went to see A Single Man, the new film by Tom Ford starring Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Matthew Goode (♥). It was wonderful - if you get a chance to see it, please, please do. You won't regret it. Such a lovely piece of filmmaking - beautiful and quiet and heartbreaking and uplifting. Colin Firth's performance is a vision of understated genius. The camera work very much shows Tom Ford's designer eye, but in a really lovely way. All in all, a breathtaking cinematic experience - I literally found myself holding my breath in a few scenes.

For those who don't know, the film is set in the 60s and is about a professor (Colin Firth) whose long-term boyfriend/partner/not-legally-husband-but-essentially-that (Matthew Goode) is killed in a car accident. The film is one day in his life when he's trying to cope with this reality. There's flashbacks to them being adorable, so that's definitely a plus, but mostly it's about the power of love, and the vacuum it leaves when it's snatched away. Really just - a beautiful film. Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aypyJtHzC70 (Can't embed :() I will say that the trailer's rather misleading - it's much less about The Ladiez than it seems, but they're also important in his life, which I think is a cool part about how this character is approached in a very natural, real way.

So, yes. Many many thumbs up. I've been anticipating this since I first heard "Matthew Goode's playing Colin Firth's boyfriend! \o/" but I had no idea it would be *this*. Lovely.

On a completely different note, I've realized that with the cancellation of Dollhouse (;______;), my viewing habits on a weekly basis are profoundly fluffy. Much more than they ever have been before. Every week, I watch: Big Bang Theory, White Collar, Life Unexpected (IT'S SO CUTE), Leverage, Bones, Castle, and Supernatural. The only holdout in the "serious" category is Friday Night Lights, but I'm only catching up with that sporadically, not watching every week, so it doesn't quite count. Once upon a time, Supernatural would have counted in the serious category, mostly because of the emotional resonance it carried for me every week, but now... not so much. I tune in mostly because I can't NOT tune in, it's so much a part of who I am. (Lol, lame.) I miss Battlestar Galactica so much. I miss Dollhouse already. I miss coherent, Winchester-driven Supernatural. I've got Band of Brothers right now to anchor me on the "thinking about my media" front, but it all just feels so... fluffy! Now, I love all these shows, but it's just getting a little bit too intensely sweet. Trouble is, I don't have the time to catch up with any of the good "serious" TV out there (Dexter, Mad Men, etc - any other suggestions?) so I'm kind of stuck, it's just something that's been bothering me a little. Where's all the good character-driven dramas, world? (Oh right, Joss Whedon wants to make them BUT YOU WON'T LET HIM. >:()

I'm just talking for the sake of talking so I'mma shut up now. You all stay safe in this crazy post-snowpocalyptic world! ♥

I haven't been watching Supernatural. It came back and I just...I just didn't feel like watching it. Maybe later, but right now? I'm just not feeling it.

AND I KNOW IT CAN NEVER EVER REPLACE BSG, but have you been watching Caprica. I was sort of unsure about it but it has some lovely characters and a really intriguing plot-line. Finding the correlations between PRESENT DAY POLITICAL/SOCIAL CLIMATE and Caprica is also good fun.

AND I AM GOING TO GO SEE A SINGLE MAN the 27th. My mom just started volunteering at a movie theater/music venue/I don't know how to explain it. They mostly show older movies or Indies (in September they show six movies from Teluride Film Festival and it's called "Teluride by the Sea"). ANYWAYS when she volunteers she can bring a guest (because it's mostly ushering) and...it's me. They're showing A Single Man then but this Saturday I'm going in and paying to see The Young Victoria.

In all seriousness, it's super quick to catch up on (2 weeks for me) and I haven't felt LOVE like this for a TV show since BSG. Oh, did I mention the bucketloads of pretty? How about the gorgeous, often-shirtless men and the completely kickass female characters?

This may seem like kind of a weird suggestion, but have you ever given Criminal Minds a shot? I love that show to bits, for a multitude of reasons; it's manages to be more than your usual procedural without sliding into soapy THIS TIME IT'S PERSONAL drama, and the characters are wonderful.

(ALSO, after your pimping a while back, I finally watched The Big Bang Theory! SHOOOW! ♥)

That's not a weird suggestion - lots of people I know watch it. And I'm sure I will eventually. I'm just not sure how I feel about ANOTHER crime procedural on top of Bones, Castle, and White Collar (though I'm sure CM is rather more serious than those). Also that's a LOT to catch up on, so. That's for the future I'm afraid!

YAY BIG BANG THEORY! How much are you in love with everybody? Even though Howard is totally creepy and Raj is just kind of a faily douche most of the time? I love Penny to TINY BITS AND PIECES, and Leonard is my faaaavorite, and oh, Sheldon. ♥ Yay I'm so glad you enjoy it! :DD

YAY BAND OF BROTHERS!!!! I have a feeling this show is going to be close to my heart FOREVER. It's not one of those brief fling kind of things! Nixon has burrowed his way into my heart and doesn't look like he's gonna leave any time soon. :DD

Yeah see, I'm not really looking for more crack. And what took you two weeks to catch up on would probably take at least two months for me, due to full time grad school and 8 other shows I'm (just barely) keeping up on every week. I still haven't finished Dexter season 3 which I bought last SUMMER. *facepalm*

I did notice you've fallen for it, maybe just a tiny wee bit. ;) It's certainly something I want to watch in the future, like during a hiatus, but I don't think it fits the bill right now.

I feel badly for all the Dollhouse fans. I kind of saw it as a hot mess with some good characters and awesome actors. But, I have to say - it had some really serious and thought provoking ideas. Like - Is a person their memories and personality or is a person something more? That's why I dug the whole Victor and Sierra remembering each other thing and the idea of the "Dolls" evolving.

I've been watching A LOT of TV lately, but mostly older stuff. I caught up with all of Californication and Dexter I missed (and omg, cannot recommend both of them enough). I also watched Sports Night and am currently trying out Eureka. So idk, I don't really think I'm all THAT good at advice giving. BUT have you seen Life? Because that show is AMAZING and wasn't the main guy whose name I always forget (shameful) also on Band of Brothers?

I did like it! A lot! But... I don't really see it being a fandom, honestly. Or at least I don't really want to read fic about it. It was a gorgeous experience, very poignant and lovely, but I think that's where it should stay - encapsulated in that experience. I'm sorry hon. :(

I've actually been catching up with Life slowly, yes! It's deeeelightful. And the main dude is DAMIAN LEWISSSS, aka the hottest ginger EVER EVER, unfff. He's also the main character (so far as there can be one, in such an ensemble piece) of Band of Brothers, yes. And he is amazing and my hero. I've also seen him in a ridiculous film in which he was an assassin who went undercover by becoming a baker in a tiny Welsh town. It was so ludicrous and I love him deeply. <333

YAY LIFE UNEXPECTED!!! It's so corny and sweet and hilarious and I am just so CHARMED by it. I've really missed having quality family dramas (like Gilmore Girls), but I didn't realize how much I missed it until this came along. Everyone is so darling! I want to bang Baze really hard! Ryan is AMAZING for sticking around through all this! Cate is so crazy and trying SO hard and oh! And Luzzzz, she's so precious and I just want to give her a big, big hug.

Pysch is pretty much exactly the same as what I'm watching right now - hilarious semi-procedurals with a healthy dose of characters - soo not really what I'm looking for to diversify! Maybe eventually though, because &DULE HILL;.

Like an expansion of the flashback where they're on the couch that will lead to BLOWJOBS while Colin Firth keeps reading to Matthew Goode in order to stop him from reading his rubbish fiction.

DAMIAN LEWIS! IDEK why I keep forgetting his name because IL him. Also I have SEEN The Baker, it was delightful, you're absolutely right. I also tried this one movie he was in called Keane and he is so FANTASTIC in it, but that movie was so hard to watch I broke it off after like a quarter of it. I really should get on that again though.

A Single Man is a gorgeous movie. Colin Firth is such a brilliant actor! I hope he'll get the Oscar.

You should watch Southland. There's nothing fluffy about this show AND it has a terrific cast led my Michael Cudlitz.
