I love Sam and Dean. Period. I know I'm not by any means alone in that, but this is more a 'thoughts are bubbling around in my head and I'm bored while waiting for this rat artery to equilibrate so I'm going to get some of them down in my LJ' kind of post, more than an 'omg REVELATION' post, so. Sam and Dean. And their "us against the world" dynamic. JUST Sam and Dean, you understand, not Sam and Dean and John. Because while yes the last three episodes were intense and awesome, they were missing something inherent about the rest of the season that I loved so very much - SamandDean. It's why I watch. To see their undivided attention given to each other, the acres and acres of LOVE that is just so obvious. The Wincest dimension is almost irrelevant - I just want to watch them, as brothers, take on the supernatural.

But that really can't continue. For the sake of the show in the sense that it's a TV program, keeping it to the same two characters would not keep anyone involved in the *making* of it happy; it leaves no avenue for new actors, it keeps Jen and Jared worked to the BONE, and it severely limits storylines. So, I understand, intellectually, that new people have to be added to the mix, that the show has to go somewhere beyond "two guys in a car".

But I don't WANT it to. I'm being stubborn and irrational but I want my SamandDean Show, godammit. I realize that I might like whoever they bring in (god I hope they cast well if there's a girl added - some girls just make me want to yank my HAIR out. On the other hand, some make me want to snog them breathless - see Faith, Kara, Scully, Hermione, River. So it's not like I hate female characters, obviously. I just haven't been tickled by anyone they've had on SPN so far, except Jess and kind of Sarah) but it still won't be the SAME. Especially without the Impala! I really am so worried about that, because the Impala is a HUGE part of the atmosphere and attitude of the show (the sound of those doors creaking open and slamming shut, the engine rumbling to life - orgasmic, seriously) and I can't imagine what other car they're going to drive now, and how that will affect the show.

*sighs* I'm worried, guys. I want NOTHING more than a show that I fall in love with first season and follow for many years. I would have sold a kidney to be born earlier and do that with Buffy, follow it as it aired. Because I've never (!) gotten to do that! The closest I've come is Lost, and I've all but completely lost (har) interest in that show. So I'm hoping that Supernatural is it, that these boys continue to own my heart for years to come. I'm just scared that they're not.

Hold me?

I'm sure you're old enough to have done that with buffy...not fandomwise, but follow it and fangirl it and such. No?

(also, think we've talked about this before)

Well I may have been old enough to enjoy it technically, but only on a level like my sister does. She finds it entertaining. That's it. I want to FANGIRL a show for several years in a row. That just sounds like so much fun.

Hm, it's just oh god the sadness is going to leak out.

It was pre-internet fangirling, but I'd say it was hardcore fangirling all the same. As in, quoting lines between me and a friend, picking names, keeping scrap books and well, lets not get into it all, it is sordid and dirty. Writing fanfic in ntoebooks before I knew what fanfic was

And then s3/4 I got the internet and oh my god it was fun, fic, crossovers, discussions, trivia contests between fans, trying to figure out what was going to happen next. Coutning down to boxsets.

But yeah, I can barely remember a time I didn't know what buffy was. Standing in a school playground instead of playing tag talking about buffy with the other Sarah. (there were two of us and we both liked buffy).

But maybe you mean a different type of fangirling?

Okay, then let me rephrase it.

I wish I had been aware of Buffy when it was airing.

Cmon sas, you know not to interpret what i say so rigidly :P

Yes, but I'm fresh out of a fight with my mother, it makes me picky.

Anyway, how are you?

A little frustrated. I was supposed to have this set of rats to experiment on and get real data from, but it turns out only 2 of the rats are usable. So that's really pretty worthless. So I have no idea what I'm going to be doing for the rest of my 7 weeks here. I have to wait until next week when my professor gets back to see what else he wants me to do.

*sigh*

I am personally ready for another character but I am still worried about whether the second season will be able to live up to the first season, with new characters or without. That is my stand on it.

From: [identity profile] impertinence.livejournal.com
Hmm.

See, the way I see it is that the first season wasn't exactly the epitome of quality. I'm in it for the pretty and the porn, and girls can be pretty too. *g*

Somehow my interest in it goes way deeper than that - I'm so ridiculously invested in Sam and Dean's relationship that I have a hard time imagining how I could love the show without it as the centerpiece.

Date: 2006-06-20 06:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] impertinence.livejournal.com
Well, I love their relationship too, but largely because of the porn.

With me, it's just--well. The show needs some supporting characters. It was falling into a pattern: car, baddie, exposition, woobie!Dean, car, credits. So a new character might be a good thing. :)

I'm very much on a "depends" stance with that. Who knows, I could end up having a mad love affair with whoever they bring in next. I'm just saying that the track record so far doesn't give me much confidence. I haven't liked the show better with any of the people they've added. So I'm willing to be open and try out whoever they give us, but... I'm just not hopeful.

Date: 2006-06-20 06:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] impertinence.livejournal.com
Yeah, that's true...but hopefully they'll give more thought to a supporting character if she or he is there for more than one ep.

Yea to say the least I am very very worried about the second season, as much as I love the show I don't know if they are going to be able to pull it off. Joss Whedon did it with Buffy and Angel but I don't know, I am really worried here.

ps. That icon is beautiful.

I hate to say it, but Kripke just isn't another Joss. (Not that anybody could be, but you know) I don't have nearly that kind of faith in him, especially after that peek I got of the original pilot script *shudders* So yes, I am worried. :(

Oh god, what you said! Exactly!

Personally I think they should wait until I'm an actress and cast me ;P hahaha.

But yeah, I was an idiot and read the spoilers for S2 (I'm assuming you haven't but I wouldn't say anything anyway) and it really freaked me out, not because of what I actually read but just because it brought it home that, things are going to change and it's probably going to hurt like a bitch. I guess we just have to put our faith in Kripke and hope he comes through.

Date: 2006-06-20 06:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] exsequar.livejournal.com
I have read the spoilers and I had the exact same reaction (it's what prompted this post) - things are going to be DIFFERENT. Ack. It's terrifying, really, and it was kind of a smack in the face to have Jensen talking about these things so nonchalantly. *sighs*

Date: 2006-06-20 07:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] glamorous-nymph.livejournal.com
I'm trying really really hard to forget what I read, and actually I have forgotten a fair bit of it, thank god.

But yeah, I am really really scared about S2. I'm so ridiculously emotionally invested (does that make sense..?) in this show, it just, yeah. OW.

Of course it makes sense. It's true for me too. This show, and these boys, have kept me going for the last 6 months. A little sad, but oh so very true, and I'm not about to deny it.

I really, really hope the second season doesn't suck. Sophomore slump is a real possibility. I want to be able to SQUEE MY BRAINS OUT at Winchester Con. *crosses fingers*

OKay this is a TERRIBLE example but...

Take Dawson's Creek. It starts out with these four main characters, and then it expands season after season until you've got this amazing ensemble cast and (gasp!) some of the characters they've added you like even MORE than the original ones. Same with the OC. I love Taylor Townsend more than LIFE, for serious.

Here's what I'd like to see happen on SPN. I'd like them to resolve the John part of the demon plotline, if not the entire demon plot, because JDM has a new show and he won't be around the whole season. Then I'd like them to expand the whole demon idea, get the boys set up with a really big overarching plot, something along the lines of the powers that be, being chosen for the goodies, Sam developing his powers, that sort of thing. The big bad should have a motivation. Probably sucking the world into hell per usual, but possibly just recruiting for the dark side on behalf of an even BIGGER big bad.

And yes, they need to expand the cast. Not necessarily romantic interests, although there should be some of that and more than just girl of the week stuff. Actual characters, maybe other hunters, or other psychics, John's old buddies, whatever. I'd like to see Bobby stick around, I liked him.

From: [identity profile] exsequar.livejournal.com
Having never seen Dawson's Creek, and tiring of The OC halfway through Season 1, I can't say either of those examples really hit home, but I know you have a point. I'm trying to think of shows I've watched several seasons of and how that worked out. The X-Files - lots of people came and went, but in the end (or, you know, before seasons 8 and 9 which, let's forget about them shall we?) it was still Mulder and Scully. Them against the world, always will be. And I liked that. I liked that most of the other main characters that were around multiple times were bad guys and kept at a distance from the Dynamic Duo, or good guys who were only consulted occasionally. Neither of them had any kind of lasting relationship with anyone else, and that worked. The one snag is that while Mulder and Scully could actually become a couple, and eventually did, Dean and Sam obviously can't, so they're less likely to leave them as is.

As another example close to my heart, Buffy. That one had a lot more core character changes, but the heart was still there to the end. I don't doubt that will happen in SPN - obviously they won't kill either Sam or Dean - but it DOES mess with things. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm scared of change. It's probably a bad thing, and I should try to get over it, but there it is.

Now if they were to cast Eliza Dushku as a girlfriend to one of the boys, I'd be totally on board with that.... :)

What you lay out does seem cool though. I think there are a lot of directions it could go that I would find engaging and fascinating. It's just that I'm not sure whether Kripke and Co will take one of them or not.

I liked Bobby too :)

Date: 2006-06-20 07:49 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] phaballa.livejournal.com
For me, it's not so much the cast I'm worried about as that the ideas need to be BIGGER. You can't have a show based on one idea and expect that to keep the audience engaged season after season. I'm envisioning it more like Angel than Buffy, really, with a truly overarching plot line that will be series-long, and smaller plots that feed into that. I think there are a lot of places SPN could go, but they need better writers. And logistically, other characters would be nice. Like in Buffy, we really got to know the bad guys. Spike and Drusilla? SO BRILLIANT. The Mayor? EVEN BETTER. This is something SPN could do really well while preserving the SamandDean-ness of the show. New cast members don't necessarily need to be allies, but they can't be retarded like Meg, either.

Date: 2006-06-20 07:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] exsequar.livejournal.com
Oh, that's a marvelous point! I hadn't even considered better characterization of the baddies as a way of mixing things up, but I think that's inspired. It really was one of Joss's strongest points, that he was able to make the villains just as fascinating as the heroes. Gah. I think we may be digging ourselves into a hole here, making comparisons to Joss, since after all, Joss is GENIUS. Oh dear. I agree, they really need to improve the writing staff on this show and really start sinking their teeth in. No more Megs, thanks very much.

Meg actually reminded me of Glory. Such a BAD actress and a not-as-well-written character, which made the bad acting that much worse. I wish they'd get Marti Noxon on board, that would be fabulous. And having a consistency in the writing is a must, as well. There are some episodes of first season that are SO funny and SO witty, and some that just really blow aside from Jensen being very pretty.

Have you read any Faith/Winchester fics?? I have a few in my SPN Crossover memories, if you want to check them out! ESPECIALLY read Wildcat by [livejournal.com profile] mona1347 because OMG.

*holds* I know what you mean about following a show. Somehow I always ended up loving a show in its final season or when it was ending. It's really sad.

Also I do agree with the whole SamandDean dynamic. I think people generally like John but I haven't really warmed to him much. I think the only part I liked was the John and Sam convo in Dead Man's Blood. And I really miss there being just SamandDean in the ep. I'm not sure about a girl character either because none of them have been particularly good. On the other hand, as much as you don't want a show to change, shows do change and sometimes that isn't bad. Look at Joss Whedon shows where they just went to a whole other level in the second season, it's amazing.

Sadly, I know what you're talking about. What happened in S1 for Grey's, I loved. S2... well, you know the best part is JDM. I'm finding the main characters as annoying (but flawed, so yay?!) as I did for S2.

But you know, Kripke could surprise us.

Just from what I've heard before, I'm assuming they're getting another character added just because it's just WAY too draining for Jared and Jensen.

But I know what you mean. I want more of them and something felt off when John was there, even though I love JDM.

I think what I'd like to see is more flashbacks to how they were in dealing with no mother. I suppose that's fanfic fodder, but I am curious. :)

Blah, I don't even want to think about this anymore. I'm gonna bury myself in the first season by working on my music vid *nod nod*

Last night I watched the end of Devil's Trap again (*whimpers*) and I had to cut it off before The Semi. I just can't watch it. It HURTS. And I know they're gonna replay it at the beginning of S2 and augh *hides face*
