As my second contribution to [livejournal.com profile] super_summer, I bring you a semi-recap of episode 1x09 Home, consisting of screencaps and my commentary. The screencaps are from the UK DVDs and were taken by [livejournal.com profile] crecd060 - thank you so much to her!

Forgive me for any inaccuracies in my comments or quotes; I don't have the episode with me to watch right now, so I'm going just from the pictures and memory :)

Just as a warning, this is NOT dialup friendly.

So we begin with a really long teaser that I don't have caps for. In short, woman is scared, woman cries over wedding photo, woman finds pictures of Winchesters in her basement, woman's daughter sees FLAMING APPARITION in her closet.

The title flashes, with its customary lack of theme song. It's all the rage, guys, really. All the cool kids are doing it.

We see the aforementioned woman at a window, banging at it in panic.

Cut to...

Sammy waking up from a nightmare. The woman was in his head! He looks confused and less than pleased.

Sam obsessively draws the tree he apparently saw in the vision, trying to figure out where he's seen it before. There's several other sketches under this one in the pad. He's a pretty good artiste, non?

Dean drinks coffee. We are not surprised.

Dean tries to interest Sam in some potential cases. "A man shot himself in the head. Three times. Any of these things blowin up your skirt pal?" Dean's an awesome brother.

Sam continues to be distracted by that damned tree, and Dean looks concerned. He's really worried about Sam, you can just see it in his face.

Sam has a moment of realization and whips out Dad's journal, flipping through for something.

And this is that something! A picture of the Winchester family in happier times - Mary, John, and the two wee boys - with that tree in the background. Sam declares that they have to go home, to Lawrence. Dean replies with "Okay, random." and I love him madly.

Sam shows the picture to Dean and says that he's been seeing that tree in his dreams, and that they need to go check it out.

He's very vague and avoidy, just saying it's a feeling he has and to trust him.

Dean isn't taking any of this vague crap, and demands that Sam explains. So Sam does, with the air of one who doesn't expect to be believed. "I have these nightmares."

"I've noticed." There's something about the way Dean says this that conjures up an image of Dean watching Sam thrash late at night, wishing fervently that there was something he could do to make the nightmares go away. He's done more than noticed - he's worried sick. But of course he would never admit as much.

Sam adds the clincher - "And sometimes they come true." Dean is a bit incredulous. "Come again?"

Sam becomes very insistent that they have to go to Lawrence, asserting that his dream has to mean something, and that this woman could be in danger - Dean is overwhelmed and distraught. And also pretty. "First you tell me you've got the Shining? Then you tell me I've got to go home? Especially when..." "When what?" "When I promised myself I would never go back there?"

And here is one of my favorite moments of Sam's of all time. I'm not even sure why, just that he's got his puppy dog eyes going full force, and his voice goes all high and tremulous, and he sounds young and vulnerable and like he's got his heart on his sleeve. "Dean, we have to check this out." It's not the most remarkable line, but it's HOW he says it. Makes me want to cry every time.

And it's off to Lawrence in the pretty pretty Metallicar, because when has Dean ever said no to Sam's puppy dog eyes?

The boys park outside their old house. Dean is FREAKING OUT and you can tell how much by how he doesn't really try to hide it. Sam says, "You gonna be okay?" (or something similar) and Dean replies, "Lemme get back to you on that." THIS is Dean's weak spot. Where he's completely vulnerable. The poor woobie.

This is Jenny! The woman from the teaser and Sam's nightmare. She's pretty unremarkable as guest chicks go, but she doesn't irritate me, or try to hit on the boys, so she goes in the approved category.

Dean was going to say they were Federal-something-or-others, but Sam goes with the truth and says it was their childhood home, and they just wanna look around. He gives Dean this look right before they walk in, and I'm not sure what it means - "see, honesty works sometimes!" or checking if Dean's about to go postal, or maybe both.

This is Sari. She's Jenny's sweet, soft-spoken daughter. I like her.

The boys say hi to Sari. Dean looks pretty awkward here - I really don't think he's all that comfortable with kids, unless there are Huge Parallels, in which case he connects STRONGLY and empathizes more than is healthy. There were potential parallels with Sari (younger brother, one parent) but the writers chose to avoid that route entirely, and Dean barely interacts with her (despite her playing the role of Young Dean later on, carrying the little brother to safety).

Dean looks pretty while he interrogates Jenny about the house. She says the lights flicker, the plumbing screws up, and she has rats, but she's only heard them. And we all know what that means!

Sam and Dean have a little spat outside, mostly because they're both freaking out like whoa. For one thing, they're not sure if this presence is the thing that killed their mom, and for another, Dean is dealing with Sam being all psychic and stuff. They are tense and scared and that comes out in arguing over what to do next instead of just dealing with it. Sam insists that they have to get the family out of the house NOW, but Dean reasonably points out that that's not exactly feasible. You know something's wrong when Sam's logic goes out the window.

Cut to a gas station, where the boys are standing outside the Impala and trying to figure out what to do. Sam looks very anxious. And pretty.

Dean also looks anxious and pretty. They both do that so well!

Sam gazes up at his big brother, expecting him to have all the answers. He asks Dean what he remembers about "that night".

Dean tells him. Apparently they've never taken this particular walk down memory lane together, because Sam doesn't know that Dean carried him out of the fire! That's a pretty crucial bit of info to be missing. It explains so much about Dean's protecting-Sam-complex. Sam is surprised and touched. Dean is matter-of-fact; obviously he's trying to hold back quite the torrent of emotions.

The boys sit next to each other and - you guessed it - look pretty.

Dean claims that he has to go to the bathroom and walks around the side of the gas station. We are treated with the most gorgeous shot of the Impala EVER. Just look at that thing! And Dean so tiny in the background. It's symbolic, I suppose, of how small Dean, the person, is, compared to the Winchester mission. It's also pretty.

Of course Dean wasn't actually going to the bathroom, because TV characters never do that! No, he was sneakily calling one John Winchester to ask for help. JA, needless to say, plays this beautifully. The crying is the inevitable result of bottling up all these emotions, and letting down his walls enough to ask for help releases all that fear and... well, angst. "I don't know what to do. So, if you get this, if you could come by Lawrence... I need your help Dad." Oh Dean.

The boys start asking around to find out about what exactly happened that night, and the days surrounding it. Once again they just look so pretty standing together.

This one's just here cause Sam's lit gorgeously. Mmm. They find out that Papa W went to visit some kind of "palm reader" in the days following Mary's death.

So the boys go to the phonebook. I just love this shot of Sam in profile and Dean looking on, blurred and indistinct in the background.

And Jared is a HUGE DORK. Heehee. He's reacting to a name in the phone book, something like "the Fantastic Mr. Fortinski", which is indeed quite laughable.

Again with the pretty. I don't know how they do it! Isn't it tiring? Anywho, Sam read out "Missouri Mosely" and Dean remembered seeing the name Missouri in Dad's journal, so he goes to get it from the back of the car.

The boys go to see this Missouri Mosely, and they sit in the waiting room looking very nervous indeed. *pets*

This is Missouri.

She likes to mess with Dean. But she wins points with me by noticing how pretty the boys are! "You two sure grew up handsome! And you [Dean] were one goofy lookin' kid."

Sam is amused and a bit surprised that anyone would talk to his Dean. (That his was what flowed from my fingers, so I decided to leave it there as a representation of just how my mind works!)

Dean is not. Amused, that is. In fact, he looks ready to choke a bitch, and that bitch is Sam. Or Missouri. I'm sure he wouldn't be picky.

After Missouri's hilarious line - "Boy you put your feet on my coffee table or I'm gonna whack you with a spoon." - Sam is even more amused. He also smiles beautifully. Note to Sam: smile more often! It's prettier than your emo self!

Just a lovely pair of profile shots:

Missouri tells the boys about how she met John and told him about everything that goes bump in the night. "I guess you could say... I drew back the curtain for him."

They head back to the house and find a very shaken Jenny (her son was just locked in the refrigerator! She's actually remarkably calm, considering.)

They head upstairs to Sam's old nursery, and Dean whips out the trusty old EMF. This is the point where I really take exception to Missouri - she calls him an amateur for using that. It's not like he CHOSE this life, he doesn't have any special abilities that make him suited to it like she does. What ELSE could he do, besides use an EMF? He's damn good at what he does, and it's unfair of her to undercut him like that. ANYway, Dean's totally adorable and shows Sam the EMF reading a presence, like he needs at least Sam's acknowledgement that it's a valid method.

Missouri's disturbed because she senses two entities present in the house.

Missouri enlists Dean to put together some little bags of herbs and stuff that they're going to put in the corners of the house to expel the poltergeist. Sam ponders.

Dean Is A Four Year Old: A Photographic Study in Two Parts

Sam enters what I am going to ASSUME is his fourth room on his floor, because they're supposed to put the bags in the NSEW corners of EVERY FLOOR, and we only see each of the people doing one, and then mayhem (haha! Mayhem!) happens and the thingy is expelled. But I digress.

Dean takes a hatchet to the wall in the kitchen.

A whole bunch of knives fly at him, but the poltergeist is kind enough to warn him by throwing just one first so he can have time to dramatically fling a table in front of himself JUST IN TIME to stop the BARRAGE OF SHARP THINGS that would CUT HIM TO BITS. How convenient ^_^

Meanwhile, Sam has gotten a lamp cord around the neck and has been yanked to the floor. And thus continues the grand tradition of Sam's throat being irresistably attractive to all things evil.

Dramatic Music booms and resonates, and almost everyone I've watched this with exclaims "Commercial!" and then, HA, the show does something unexpected and...

it's Dean to the rescue! Not even commercials will stand in the way of mighty Protector!Dean!

He tries really, really... *zones out* Wait sorry what was that? I got distracted by Dean's neck. Ahem.

Gratuitous hands-touching-neck porn. Mmm.

Dean leaves Sam for a second to throw the baggy thing in the wall and WHOOSH, the poltergeist (supposedly) is exorcised from the house. It's a very pretty effect.

More gratuitous rescuing.

Poor Sammy.

The Hug that wasn't! I mean, it was, but the damn commercial break cut it off FAR to early. Hmph. Kripke, you are such a tease!

Downstairs, Sam asks Missouri if she's sure the thing is gone. He obviously senses something, but doesn't trust his own perceptions. But his brow furrows in puzzlement.

Dean notices (because he notices everything about Sam) and looks concerned again. And vaguely disquieted.

The three warriors stand over the scene of destruction.

Dean is a chivalrous sweetheart and helps Missouri down the stairs.

The Boys stake out Jenny's house, on the basis of Sam's lingering unease. They also look Really Pretty while doing it.

Gratuitous Dean neck porn again! *licks*

Sam sees Jenny pounding at her window just like in his dream, so the boys go rushing into the house. Dean saves Jenny.

In Sari's room, the Flaming Apparition has reappeared.

The poor girl looks terrified.

Sam is awesome and rescues the two kids, but something prompts him to put them down and tell Sari those words that echo in time - "Take your brother outside as fast as you can, don't look back!"

Sam gets yanked backwards by something, and Sari looks SCARED. I really like this little actress, she's very convincing!

Sam gets dragged along the floor. Also, HANDS.

I love this little tableau. Dean grabs Sari and asks urgently where Sam is.

"He's inside, something's got him." Dean has his OMGNOTSAM face on.

More pretty neck porn *admires* Oh and also Sam is pinned to a wall by the malevolent poltergeist. I can't really object, cause hi, PRETTY.

And HANDS. Nngh.

The Flaming Apparition approaches Sam, slowly. I just think this is a really gorgeous effect, I love what they did with it.

Dean raises his gun to defend Sammy, like the awesome big brother he is. But what's this? Sam yells for Dean to stop and Dean is understandably confused.

"Because I know who it is. I can see her now."

And surely enough, it's Mary, emerging beautifully from the flaming form her spirit took due to the nature of her death. I'm not sure why she kept the flames if she could look like this, although maybe she was trying to scare the family into somehow drawing attention to themselves to bring Sam and Dean there. Hmm.

Isn't she beautiful?

"Mom?"

"Dean." I adore the quiet simplicity of this scene. I think it was done perfectly, without all the melodrama that could theoretically have been injected into it.

Dean watches her move past him towards Sam - he looks split open. God, poor Dean.

"Sam."

And here is one of Sam's greatest facial transformations, from happy to broken in the blink of an eye. This is the moment I always begin to tear up at.

"I'm sorry." One of the most mysterious lines of the series, and I'm not sure we'll ever get an answer about what she's sorry for.

"Get out of my house. And let go of my son." Oh Mary, being the best mother she possibly could. I wish we could have some flashbacks, see more of her personality.

Dean still looks absolutely broken.

"Now it's over." Sam looks so peaceful here.

*sniff* Dean looks through the pictures that Jenny found in her basement.

Oh my HEART.

So bittersweet for Dean. Well, mostly bitter. This is the life he should have had - happy and beautiful and normal.

Sam looks so small and lost. He doesn't understand his new powers, or why his mother is sorry, and on top of that he's really just seen his mother for the first time in his life. He's overwhelmed.

"What's happening to me?"

The boys say goodbye and promise not to be strangers. They haven't lived up to that promise yet! But I hope Missouri will be back next season.

As usual, they drive off into the sunset in the Impala.

Missouri comes home and starts talking to herself. We think she's insane for several seconds.

But LOOK! It's PAPA! Papa Winchester, not talking to his boys. For some mysterious reason. Grrr. I'm with Missouri on this one - "Boy I could just smack you. Why won't you talk to your children?"

He certainly woobies well though. As well as Dean! He must be his father then.

And this concludes my (really long, sorry!) recap of Home! It's my favorite episode by far, and I had a fun time doing this - I hope you all enjoyed it too!

That is a really awesome recap, together with delightful pictures. How come I never noticed that in the picture of John and Mary (one of the ones Dean gets back from Jenny), John has a cigarette between his fingers? I find it curious; nowadays, smoking on American TV is done only by villains. Am also hoping Loretta Divine (Missouri) can make it back onto the show; her guest-starring schedule on Grey's Anatomy doesn't seem that hectic *g*

Mmmmmmmm, Jensen's eyelashes. And gratuitous neck!porn.

Thank you so much, I'm very glad you enjoyed! I didn't notice the cigarette either, and that's an interesting point about villains. Huh. Well he doesn't seem to smoke now.

Jensen is just walking gratuitous porn all the time ;)

Well he doesn't seem to smoke now.

No, he doesn't. But things like that always raise questions - if they asked actors to pose for pictures so they could have the props, was it outside somewhere and JDM was smoking, and they snapped a picture without realising the cigarette was right there? Or was it on purpose? Or did they manip the picture from an old one of JDM and the arm isn't even his? Oy, headachey now.

Jensen is just walking gratuitous porn all the time ;)

That goes without saying. I want to icon the one where he's leaning his head back and all you can see that's well-lit is the arc of his throat. GUH.
