So the number of people watching this journal is approaching 300 - that's pretty mindboggling. There's a lot of you out there that I just don't really know! And you probably don't know me all that well either - I know how hard it is to try to glean RL details out of my journal. So I've decided to type up a brief description of who I am, just so you can get to know me a little better. And I'd love if you could do the same! Just tell me whatever you think is important about you. Basics are good (age, where you live, etc) but anything you'd want to tell me would be fabulous :)
So, hi! My name is Anne. I live in Connecticut, USA, but I go to school in Pennsylvania, USA, at Franklin and Marshall College. I'm 19 and a sophomore. I'm majoring in Chemistry (focus in biochemistry) and minoring in math. Just from that, you can tell that I'm a big numbers geek - numbers and molecules and all that whatnot just make sense to me, and are of most interest to me. I love English and writing too, but it's not really what I want to do with my life. I'm probably going to end up going into scientific research, but at this point who knows!
My plans for the immediate future: I've just been hired to do research for a chemistry professor here at my college for 10 weeks this summer. Then NEXT year, I'm going to be studying abroad at TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN. Fuck yes, Ireland here I COME! *squee* I can't wait for that!
My parents have been divorced for about 5 and a half years. I have two younger siblings: Peter is almost 16 and Meredith is 12. I love my dad more than anyone else in the world. My family has lived in Connecticut since before I was born - I've never lived anywhere else. Our extended family is mostly spread between Ohio and Michigan, though, so I can't count the number of times we've made the 10 hour drive out there! I have two sets of aunts and uncles on each side, and several adorable little cousins ranging in age from 3 to 12.
I went to the same school from Kindergarten through 12th grade (for non Americans, that's age 5 to 17) because my dad worked there (since I was 1!) and we got a GIGANTIC tuition discount off the 25k they charged a year. It was a truly fantastic school, and I loved almost my entire experience there (except 7th grade - but that might have had to do with adolescent angst more than the school :P). I had the most wonderful high school education - I loved my teachers, and they have shaped who I am so dramatically. I'm so grateful that I got to have that experience.
I've never had a boyfriend. Not even close, really. And I've never been KISSED. *hides face* I felt I should share this as it's pretty important to who I am, heh. Usually I'm fine with it, but I'm getting a little desperate over here! Heh. Oh well. Patience, patience! Aaaand... moving on.
I love music. I love to sing. I've been in choirs pretty much all the time since middle school. I also had the unparalleled experience of playing Wendy in my high school's production of Peter Pan when I was a sophomore. That was... yeah. Truly amazing, and I'll never forget it. I played the piano for a few years but dropped it because... I can't commit to anything? Heh. I sometimes regret that, but not really.
In terms of music I LISTEN to, my interests kind of go all over the place. Right now (as in, at this very moment) I am rocking out to Metallica, hee. My musical tastes were largely shaped by my dad - I grew up listening to The Beatles, Soundgarden, XTC, REM, The B-52s, Midnight Oil, Genesis, Green Day, Foo Fighters, Stone Temple Pilots, David Bowie, and so on and so forth. I still love all those bands (especially Foo Fighters \o/) and my favorite music tends to be relatively hard rock. I have a thing for crunchy guitars - they get me all excited in my pants *g* But since I've gone to college and had a bit more freedom in terms of deciding what I listen to, my tastes have sort of spread out. I've acquired a taste for pretty acoustic guitar alternative stuff, with both male and female singers. I've also gotten into CLASSIC ROCK, thanks very much to Supernatural. I'm loving Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers Band, Metallica, and Jimi Hendrix particularly. I had a BIG Fall Out Boy obsession period last year - I'm really not sure why. They're just FUN. Then I had a KANE obsession, because, homg, it's KANE! Never been that much into country before, but wow. Favorite band ever. Other bands I really like: K's Choice, Bush, Noe Venable, Benefits of Being Paranoid, Steve Carlson, Flyleaf, Breaking Benjamin, A Perfect Circle, Evanescence, Franz Ferdinand, Audioslave, Trapt, Something Corporate, Panic! At the Disco, Sarah McLachlan, Sneaker Pimps, and so on and so forth. (If you want me to upload any of this, btw, just ask!) Okay, I'll stop rambling about music.
I love to read. I don't get as much chance to lately as I would like, but when I was younger I was QUITE the bookworm. I just devoured them. I mostly tend towards fantasy and sci-fi literature. My favorite authors are Anne McCaffrey and Guy Gavriel Kay (who writes the most brilliant historical fantasy). I also have so much love for Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials, Robert Jordan's epic Wheel of Time, and, bizarrely, Clive Cussler, who's a popcorn action adventure writer who I've loved for years and years. I have such a crush on his protagonist, Dirk Pitt *g* Basically there's nothing I love more than curling up with a good fantasy story and losing myself in the characters and their world.
In terms of fandom and the internets and all that whatnot... I guess I got my start around 7th or 8th grade. My first foray was through Neopets and a guild (message board, essentially) there that I belonged to. It was based around Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern books, and was a sort of silly RPG. I had lots of fun with my friends there. Then I transitioned into Race War Kingdoms, a text-based game where you clicked to kill monsters or chatted with people in the built in chat room. I was much more of a talker than anything *g* It wasn't fandom, but RWK and its successor Shimlar were how I first REALLY started meeting tons of people online. It was kind of how I survived the lonely angst of my adolescence - in these games, I was actually really popular and well-known, despite my youth, and that was such a huge boost of confidence to me. I even got to be a moderator for a while, though eventually I stepped down because I knew the ugly politics behind the scenes were just too much for me. But I made some wonderful friends through that, and I stayed there for a good three or four years. I've only really kept about three or four friends that I occasionally talk to from that, but it was a huge period of my life. Then I started veering into the world of television fandom, beginning with X-Files. At first I just read fanfiction. Then I found LJ about two years ago, joined, and inevitably got completely sucked in. My fandoms since, in sort of chronological order, have been Buffy, Harry Potter, Queer as Folk, Ewan McGregor, Star Wars (and its attendant RPS), Lost, Firefly, Boondock Saints, Battlestar Galactica, Veronica Mars, SUPERNATURAL, Heroes, Angel, Dexter, Torchwood, and now Stargate Atlantis. I've always been very involved in slash (Remus/Sirius really being my first big slash pairing), now more than ever as you can tell ;)
Let's see... other things you might want to know about me... oh yeah, what I look like :) Let's show rather than tell, okay?

That's me in the middle, proud Browncoat! The darlings with me are
mona1347 and
quietdiscerning. This picture was taken at the awesomesauce WINCHESTERCON, at Nashville in October 2006. *nostalgic sigh* Good times.
Okay so - that's probably more than you ever wanted to know about me! But if you still have questions, feel free to ask, and again - tell me about yourselves! I want to knowww! :D

Date: 2007-01-21 11:27 pm (UTC)My parents are divorced too and I also have a brother called Peter *g* My other brother who is 15 is called Sebastian.
I’ve been in a relationship for seven years now and sometimes I really wish I could be single again. Enjoy your freedom as long as you can!!!
I’m totally into music. I listen to 12 Stones, ACDC, Korn, 30 seconds to Mars, Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, Deftones, Evanesence, Incubus, Placebo, Three Days Grace,….
Fandom is half my life. I met a lot of nice people on the internet. My fandoms are SUPERNATURAL, Veronica Mars, Angel, Alias, Prison Break, Harry Potter. People I adore are Jared, Jensen, David Boreanaz, Michael Vartan, Michael Muhney, Ryan Hansen, Jennifer Garner. I guess that’s enough ^^
But Supernatural, Jared and Jensen own me! I’m going to Asylum con in May and I can’t wait to actually meet the boys, talk to them and take pictures with them *flails*
More than you wanted to know about me?

Date: 2007-01-22 12:07 am (UTC)HI ANNE!
Date: 2007-01-21 11:33 pm (UTC)I'm totally cheesing over here on my end of the computer because we sound quite similar. My favorite class right now is AP Chemistry, followed closely by AP English. Our semester just ended and with it, my psychology class (which was one of my favorites, so, sad) but I get to start intro to humanities now (happy!).
I was accepted Early Decision to Kenyon College, which is an extra-tiny-small liberal arts college in Gambier, OH. I am *SO EXCITED* for college. It's kind of a problem. I plan to double-major in neuroscience and English. I am a big huge geek about brains and I really want to understand them on the molecular level, meaning I am potentially going to go into scientific research, like you. OTOH, I also *love* English. I write poetry (in addition to fanfiction) and I just love reading and words and I squee over syntax and terza rima rocks my socks.
Have I mentioned that I love reading? If you haven't read The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, you need to get up from the computer and run, don't walk, to the nearest bookstore, buy it, sit down, and not stop reading until you're finished. It is just that good. I wish I were kidding.
Other favorites include The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer (which I literally just finished on Friday and OMGSOGOOD), Shakespeare, some other books that aren't good enough for me to remember right now but I'm sure I'll kick myself for saying that later, and tons and tons of poetry. In recent years I've amassed almost as many books of poetry as novels and nonfiction. Ooh, nonfiction. I like reading about brains. And evolutionary biology. And other geeky things.
I actually just reread the His Dark Materials trilogy over the summer because the S2 finale of Doctor Who reminded me of the end of The Amber Spyglass that I *had* to reread it. When I was younger, I *loved* A Wrinkle In Time and its sequels. I would say that A Wrinkle in Time was probably the most influential book I ever read, actually. I wrote my college essay about it. *geek!* :)
While I *have* been kissed a few times, none of them were in the context of an actual, functional relationship and frankly, none of them were very good. Annnd none of them were with tongue, so I've never made out with anybody. Which is a shame, because I hear that swapping saliva is supposed to be fun. :-/
I've been writing fanfiction off and on since I was six years old. Literally. In first and second grade, I used to write these stories about the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. I shipped Tommy/Kimberly sooooo hard. The first fandom I really *fandomed* was Animorphs (in my defense, I was twelve), followed by In a Heartbeat, Dawson's Creek, the OC, Harry Potter, House MD, new Doctor Who, Supernatural, Heroes, Torchwood, and Firefly. And I saw an episode of NCIS on Thursday, so who knows what could happen there?
I love music but am sadly lacking in anything that might be mistaken for talent. That doesn't stop me from singing along in my car at the top of my lungs to Something Corporate (do you have Ready...Break? I can upload it for you if you want. I might upload it anyway. So much fun.), Jack's Mannequin, Regina Spektor, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Death Cab For Cutie, Lisa Loeb, Jets to Brazil, Mike Doughty, and many others. My tastes veer towards alternative rock that's either not quite emo but not quite not emo, or not quite folk but not quite not folk, if that even pretends to make any sense at all.
Re: HI ANNE!
Date: 2007-01-22 12:36 am (UTC)I've considered neuroscience before - that sounds awesome. And it could actually still be an option for me, i could go to grad school for it. Who knows! I think it's awesome that you already know your passion :)
I loved A Wrinkle in Time too, though not quite that much! *g* But yes, definitely a fantastic book.
Hmm, what's Ready...Break? Is it a recent album of theirs? If so, no i don't have it and it would be awesome if you could upload it for me! I love their first two albums :)
It's fantastic getting to know you better, Monica! *hugs*

Date: 2007-01-22 12:26 am (UTC)Hmm...what can I tell you about myself? My name is Moya, I'm 18, and I live in Vancouver, BC. I am currently an undergrad at the University of British Columbia working towards a Bachelor of Arts degree (and cursing every goddamn MINUTE of it ;D). Looking at everything you've listed about yourself, we are eerily similar :D In fact, I think our fandoms are, like, identical. \o/
I love to sing as well, and I'm absolutely in love with the choir I'm part of right now because we get to sing amazing things like Handel's Messiah and Beethoven's 9th Symphony OMFG *screams into fists*. I've played the piano for...*thinks* *counts on fingers*...twelve years now. It is, essentially, my life (well, you know, except for SUPERNATURAL DUH) :) I also play the clarinet and cello moderately well, but haven't taken lessons for either in a long time. I miss the cello like a severed limb D:
OK, the more I read your intro, the more I think I could just copy and paste my face into that picture and write my name at the top and it would be almost completely accurate :O So I'll just stop now before I repeat everything you said.

Date: 2007-01-22 12:31 am (UTC)Gyah I am so envious of you living in Vancouver, hee. SPN BSG and SGA!!! *combusts* Uhm, I'm calm, yes. *breathes*
My choir is absolutely wonderful too. Our director is so so fantastic, and the hall we practice/perform in is touted to have "perfect" acoustics, and I really can't dispute that. We've done some great works too - I particularly loved Haydn's Te Deum. Last semester we did Vivaldi's Gloria, which was great too. Right now we're doing Mendelssohn's Elijah, which seems okay thus far. I'm reserving judgement for now.
I kind of wish I could afford to take lessons for the piano again, but they're so expensive here :( Ah well.
And hey look, I have a made of awesome icon TOO! \o/ This is ridiculous ;)

I love music, pretty much any and all kinds and I love to read although I don't get to as much as I used to for some reason. Um, I also love writing and photography and traveling and movies and pop culture. In fact, I'm kinda a geek.

my parents divorced when i was six months old and my dad has been remarried twice since then. i live with my brother, aka: timbro or monkey (boy) in our apartment. it's tiny and rundaown and pretty damn ghetto really but love all the same. he's about four years my elder and we are both enrolled in college, though neither of us are taking classes at the moment. we're pretty close, having pretty much raised each other.
i like making graphics, drawing, writing (screenplays are my passion), and music.
i don't play an instrument, sadly, but my musical taste is huge and wide open to new blood.
my current music favs are tv on the radio, the format, and the (classic, baby) rolling stones.
