Apr. 28th, 2006 05:24 pmLots of thoughts about Salvation. I usually don't do it this in depth, but this EPISODE. Whoa.
You know, I love music videos. They are one of my favorite products of fanculture. The whole visual + musical thing just "blows my skirt up" (as Dean would say) and I can rewatch music vids over and over. So the fact that this episode starts with a music video? Rocks my freaking SOCKS. And, you know, it's a really GOOD music video. There's some great timing stuff - the two hugs are arranged perfectly with the music. The lines they chose from the show just run a shiver down my spine, they're so perfect. And the SONG! I've never heard it before, but wow - how appropriate is that? *happy sigh* I love my show.
I'm pretty bitter that they killed off Pastor Jim and Caleb. It cheapens the name dropping that was done all through the season. I thought they were building them up to be important characters, but instead they were just building emotional ties for Papa that we would believe in when the time came for them to be severed.
Meg still annoys me instead of scaring me. Her hair is just so distractingly BAD. And while she's better at acting evil than good (her attempts at flirting? KILL ME PLEASE) she is still not a good actress, and her line delivery just makes me cringe sometimes. And you know, that whole black eyes thing can be really hot sometimes, and it's something that I find genuinely creepy, but on her? It just looked cheesy. Sigh. Oh, show, couldn't you have come up with a better arch nemesis? Well, they redeemed themselves somewhat by bringing in REALLY HOT EVIL GUY at the end, so I'll cut them some slack.
*sniffles* Pastor Jim looks like such a nice guy. And he's got an awesome weapon collection! RIP Jim :(
I LOVE THE LOGO. With the really creepy sounds that I can't possibly describe, but hearing it MAKES ME HAPPY :)
I like how much Dean and Sam look at each other. Hee.
You know, Sam, I love you, but you're pretty fucking self-centered. With all this crap going down he has to stop and bitch about how Mary's death is his fault. He may be right in the sense that she died because the thing was coming after him, but it doesn't mean he bears any moral responsibility for it. He can't feel guilty for being born! Oh wait, he's Sam, yes he can :P
(You may start seeing a trend here, so I'm just gonna come out and say it... *deep breath* I'm a Dean girl now. He's progressively won me over in the past few episodes and now I just want to hold him and cuddle him and give him cookies. Because OW. My poor boy :( I still adore Sam, and he definitely has a point in some of their disputes, but he's just so... whiny sometimes. My sympathies have shifted. Now, I still have the problem with Dean that I've always had - I HATE his horndog moments. They make me cringe because he's just making an ass out of himself. The pointless hitting on the girl at the hospital later is a good example. Also, I hate his complete and utter lack of social grace sometimes. I highly value tact, and he... doesn't. But on all other counts, when he's being serious, snarky, vulnerable - I love him to pieces.)
Mmmmmm! Sam looks really hot in that long sleeved black shirt. Very sexy. I like the less layers thing!
I do love how gruff and hard Sam's voice gets whenever Jess is mentioned, or they're talking about going after the demon. It's very intense and intimidating. I also like how John softened when he mentioned Jess - he knows Sam's pain, far too well, and sympathizes deeply with him. I love seeing that connection.
Ooooh, hot music with the Papatruck and Metallicar on the highway! I'm a bit miffed that the truck is overshadowing the Impala, cause just the Impala on the road is one of the sexiest parts of this show. We need to come up with a cool name for the truck, btw. I love how it really looks like the father of the Impala, all black with the silver accents but it's bigger. Loooove.
Why does John look all wet and disheveled when he gets out of the truck? It looks like he's been sweating profusely or something.
On a less shallow note, John's despair here breaks me. And I like that Sam knows when to fall in line.
Who would believe that Sam's an officer of anything?! He's a scruffy college kid! Or, looks like one. Oy.
DEAN. STOP IT. You know, as soon as that girl got on camera I was TERRIFIED she was going to actually play a role in the episode. And that would have pissed me off. As it was, those ten seconds were completely unnecessary.
These flashbacks are AMAZING. The whole shifty thing and and I don't know how to describe it but you've seen it! They're creepy and terrifying and just really well done. A little bit prolonged, but that's okay. And look, Sam's being Harry Potter again! ^_^ But he's standing outside a HOSPITAL, looking like he's having a bad migraine, and no one offers to help? Lovely.
You know, it looks like that train track passes right through the middle of town, how does he know that top part is where her house is? Oh right, SPN doesn't bother with loigc :P
After Sam jogs and is looking at the map and the vision starts up again, the first face he makes amuses me; it's like, "Hey whoa!"
Okay, this woman? Is adorable. I heart her a lot. I wish she would have played a larger role in the ep, cause she's just so sweet. And Sam is actually doing a really good job of keeping up his facade, being all NORMAL and stuff, but then he looks like he's seen a ghost and I'm all *facepalm* SAMMY!
I never really thought about this before, but I think there's a pretty huge significance to the women being slit across the stomach - sort of a punishment for bearing their child, who for some reason is the target of this demon? An attack on their fertility/womanhood in some way, anyhow. Though I'm not sure how that fits with Jess, because as far as we know she didn't have a child. Hmmm.
*waves pom poms for Dean* Yay for standing up to Papa! Yay for taking that "tone"! Yay for defending Sam! *smooches him*
Hee, I kind of love that Dean looks out the window when Sam says "Last time I saw you you fell out of a window". It's a funny little ironic timing thing, but it's also kind of awesome that he would immediately think to check that she wasn't calling from right outside. Good job, Deano! *waves pom poms again*
"It's time for the grownups to talk, Sam." Oh Meg. You look like you're 12! That line coming out of your mouth is just too laughable.
Sam has an adorable puppydog face on right after he hands the phone to John.
Gotta give it to Meg, she's a ruthless little bitch who's more than just talk.
Wait, the boys didn't guess Meg was a demon? Just a really naughty human? Ooooookay.
Papa. Reeeeeally bad plan. Of course they're gonna want to test the merchandise!
PAPA'S ALL TEARY AND IT MAKES ME WIBBLE *holds him close* And then the way the boys make teary eye contact when Dad's done.. *holds them close* They're so connected to each other, this year of hunting, just the two of them has tightened their bond so deeply, they just.. have to keep making sure the other is there. They're each other's touchstones, just like Mulder and Scully!
Mmmm, Dean drives up and Sam turns his attention completely to watching the Impala come closer. No I definitely don't have my Wincest goggles on, why do you ask?
It's really interesting that John went from not even wanting them in the fight with him, to passing responsibility for it entirely over to them. It shows that the boys really DID get through with their protests - they are all grown up, they can take care of themselves, and he can trust them completely because they are just as good as he is (seriously, I believe that).
You know, I was waiting for an "I love you" in this scene, but then I realized it would have felt too much like a goodbye. Which is the last thing they want. Instead there's a "see you later" - which is almost more touching, because they refuse to believe that they're going to lose each other. Any of them. And John gripping Sammy's shoulder is adorable. Yay for manly physical affection!
CSG 8R3 - Daddy's license plate number.
The carrrrr. Ngh. I love all of their one on one conversations, they just make me happy. And Sam expressing appreciation for Dean - "Even when I couldn't count on anybody, I could count on you." YES. Yes. Dean is your world Sam, and don't you forget it. And then Dean's reaction is to get all angry and "No, NO emotional shit because that means this could be the end and I WONT LET IT BE." Dean is still in the headspace (as we see later) that the FAMILY is what matters, and keeping everyone alive is far far more important than carrying out the mission. That was demonstrated earlier as well when he entreated John to RUN instead of doing some damn fool heroics that would get him killed. Dean is the one trying to keep this whole thing from spinning wildly out of control, and I love him for it. Sam, on the other hand, is ready to die tonight, which is why he makes "the speech." He's preparing for his own death more than Dean's, because he already knows, deep down, that he's willing to give his life for this fight. That's the fundamental difference between them, really. Dean NEEDS his family, rather desperately. And that's his driving force. The thought that he might lose Sam... well, see after his angry outburst how he turns his head away and swallows, with his eyes shining wetly. He is fucking terrified, man. Wah.
"I see where your boys get their good looks." It amuses me when shows openly acknowledge how gimmicky casting is - I mean, how likely is it that these three men would be so drop dead sexy? So it's fun that Meg points it out.
What is that noise that makes Meg look away? Some machinery or something?
Why would John just stand there after turning on the water? Why not take advantage of their confusion to run? *facepalm* Also, what the hell does the hot!Badguy think the water is if not holy? John clearly wouldnt just turn on normal water and expect it to do something o.O
Oh, so that's why John stuck around, so he could get in an adorable smug grin :D
can I mention what an orgasmic sound the Impala doors opening is?
I think that the crib bursting into flames is an expression of the demon's anger/frustration at being thwarted. Maybe it figured if it couldn't have this child (and killing its mother, baptizing it with her blood, is somehow his claim to the child) then it should be dead instead. I don't understand why there's fandom confusion over whether or not the baby usually dies - clearly this is an extraordinary circumstance, where the demon's been shot at while trying to do it's thing.
Also, question - why didn't Mary scream while she was on the ceiling? Same with Jess. Monica was still yelling for quite a prolonged period of time. Hmm.
"I don't care!" "I DO!" That there is pretty much the summation of what I was talking about before. OW. My poor heart :(
"It's not worth dying over!" "What?" Sam genuinely doesn't get that going after the demon shouldn't be a suicide mission. The vampire Luther said it best - "Revenge isn't much good if you end up dead." Because honestly! The revenge doesn't even *matter* then. I mean, sure, killing the demon would save a lot of families, and that's a really important thing to try to do, but.. they save people all the time. They need to be ALIVE to do that. Letting this quest be the end of them - not good.
"That thing killed Jess." Right after Sam says that, Dean does this visible switch from the offensive to defensive - he literally pulls back into himself and gets all closed off and ominous looking. It's kind of frightening. God, JENSEN! Why are you so damn good?!?
