It sounds kinda bizarre, but if you can fold your clothes and then pack them into the largish zip-lock bags, it's pretty easy to squish the air out of them and seal them that way. It actually takes up quite a bit less space than rolling them (at least for me), with the added plus of being able to rifle through your bag(s) without having to struggle too much with repacking everything - if it's already in nice little ziplock packets, you just toss it all back in and you're good to go.

Since you're going to be gone for so long, it might even be worth it to grab some of those spacesaver whatever larger bags at some place like Linens and Things, where you pack the items and then vaccuum out the air.

That, and just leave behind anything you're not going to use, or have it shipped out. Airline baggage limits aside, try to limit yourself to what you can actually carry on your own, because that makes things a lot easier in case of flight delays or grabbing a taxi or taking the metro (whatever your plans may include).

And I know that's a lot of random commentary from someone you don't really know, but I've done two cross-country trips in the past three weeks, so I've definitely been in your shoes (even if not quite as long-term). Good luck!
