Alright, I've got a lot of stuff to talk about, I haven't gotten any proper time online to actually update - I'm always checking my flist, or responding to comments. But I really really need to make a post, lol.

Things I need to talk about
1) HBP, obviously.
2) Firefly, and the Serenity trailer
3) American Beauty
4) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
5) Timeline and King Arthur (yes, one category)
ETA: 6) A Life Less Ordinary

Notice how my own life isn't up there. That's because my life is pathetic, boring, and seriously depressing if I start thinking about it for more than a minute in depth. So I leave you with ultimately quite pointless rambles on topics as far removed from my own life as I can get.

I have not decided how much I like this book. I've seen people going OMG THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!1!11eleven!1 but I honestly do not feel like that, at all. PoA remains, and probably will remain, my favorite HP book. It just touched something... and it helps that it had REMUS and SIRIUS to a great extent. Love them ♥. But anyway, this one kept me engaged enough that I finished it at 2 AM on Saturday night (or rather Sunday morning). So I finished it pretty quickly. But that was mostly because I had this driving curiosity about how it was going to *end*, who was going to die, and a real need to know that so I could actually read my flist (pathetic I know, but there it is). It wasn't so much actually what was *happening*. For the most part, I didn't *like* what was happening. To try to organize this ramble, I'll divide this up into topics...

Harry/Ginny - This was far and away my least favorite part of the book. I don't understand how so many people can see "I saw it coming!" because honestly? There has been no glimmer of this since Ginny gave up her crush, and it was only that, a crush! The creature in Harry's chest (a bit cheesy) was sudden and random and... just, not emotionally rooted for me. Their entire relationship consisted of vague references to intimate times, jokes about tattoos, and one casual goodnight kiss (after the first one, I mean). Their first one on one conversation was the break up! Which actually makes me believe that it's not going to continue into the next book, because it wasn't given any solid emotional foundation, so I'm happy about that, but still. It was silly and unsatisfying in the extreme.

Ron/Hermione - Now, despite being a huge HHr girl, I was not unaware that this was likely to happen in this book, and I felt confident that JKR would do it in a way that I could accept. And I think she has (unlike Harry/Ginny). They didn't actually get *together* in this book, just sort of acknowledged their feelings and actually took some actions on it (even if those actions were silly, hormonal, jealous things to do). Ron was a genuine teenage boy (that is, pretty damn stupid) and that worked. I didn't so much like Hermione's characterization (more on that in a moment) but I guess it does fit with the hormone stuff. Um. Well. Not so much. Okay let's talk about Hermione now...

Hermione - Hermione has always been my role model. She's quite similar to me in a lot of ways (I'm embarassed to admit that her behavior when the O.W.L. results arrived? Highly, highly reminiscent of my own behavior. Getting nervous over grades that you know are going to be stellar, and then secretly being a little disappointed when they're less than perfect. I'm not proud of it, but there it is) and she's always been strong, independent, ingenious, and basically a staple of the books, not to mention Harry's sanity. She was his bulwark, always, whenever he needed a helping hand or someone to bring him down from a capslock fit. But in this book, her activities consist entirely of 1) Trying to get revenge on Ron for being Lavender's tongue hockey partner, 2) Annoying Harry about the HBP, or 3) Disregarding Harry's theories about Draco. It's really quite obnoxious, and I felt myself disliking Hermione for the very first time. It was an uncomfortable thing. I suppose I can't call her ooc, because JKR determines what that means, but it feels like the Hermione we know and love was devoured by the hormone monster, which... is quite the exaggeration. I'm 17, and I'm still a total nerd, quite unable to get "action" much less a boyfriend. But apparently Hermione can do that on a second's notice, just because she suddenly feels the need to? And that overcomes her good sense quite entirely? *sighs* I'm sorry, but I have a hard time swallowing that.

Horcruxes - Okay, this is one of the coolest things JKR has come up with. It's just such an awesome idea, the splitting of the soul and then preserving it to prevent total death. The idea has been bounced around that Harry is one of Voldy's Horcruxes (probably inadvertently, as part of the transfer of qualities that occurred) and I found this part of the cub interview thing (found on mugglenet) that seems to support that theory:

Sarah Wallace for the Irish Independent - How did you think of the bond between Harry and Lord Voldemort?
JK Rowling: That is another one of those questions that goes right to the heart of the series. I can't answer. It touches way too closely on book 7. Sorry. Good question.

So that means that there is something fundamental to learn about their bond that is important to book 7. It seems like it would make sense that this would be it. But that aside, I'm a little confused as to how JKR's going to resolve this in the next book. In this one, finding one Horcrux (that didn't even end up being there) took a lot of effort and time, and indirectly resulted in the death of the only wizard that Voldemort fears (other than Harry, I suppose). So... now he's got to find 3, possibly 4 more, and destroy them, AND kill Voldemort? Tall order for ONE BOOK! I mean I think it will help that the trio will be away from Hogwarts and all the silly over-hormonal nonsense, not to mention the classes that seem to just get in the way now :P But still, that will take some doing!

Snape - Okay. So. Fresh from finishing the book, I read three theories that fully convinced me that Snape is not evil, in the sense of being completely loyal to Voldemort and all that. What I mean to say is that Dumbledore wanted Snape to kill him. This does not absolve Snape of his greasy total git-ness, not to mention kind of causing Sirius's death (whimper), but... I think there is a chance for him to redeem himself. I see there being two possible scenarios, the first being more likely than the second:

1) Dumbledore was dying from the green potion stuff anyway, knew something about Snape's Vow to complete Draco's mission for him if he couldn't do it, and didn't want Draco to become a murderer. So Dumbledore was protecting his student down to the very end. And Snape would be able to keep his cover with the Death Eaters. The order could have been conveyed through Legilimency when Snape "gazed" at Dumbledore in those last seconds.
2) The green potion stuff WAS the Horcrux, actually, and the only way to destroy it was to kill the person who drank it. Not very likely, but still a cool idea.

Of course there's any number of problems with the first theory, like... why was Snape so full of rage and hatred? Was it aimed actually at Voldemort for basically forcing him to do this to Dumbledore? Where did he get the motivation to make the curse (because it requires really strong intent)? Who knows. But I just think that Snape being evil would just be so... EASY, and kind of abandon 6 books of characterization giving him a certain dimensionality (admittedly limited due to Harry's own limited perspective). There's definitely something more in store for Snape.

Draco - It was so cool that Draco got more depth in this book. I never felt much affection for him, but now I might actually hop (or slide cautiously) onto the Harry/Draco bandwagon, because I actually see there is SOME potential there. Before, Draco was just an obnoxious brat, but now... hmm. Although, that scene where Draco brutalizes Harryo n the train? Scary, dark dark stuff. That really scared me, more than anything Draco's done before. ([livejournal.com profile] the5thmarauder, you're gonna have to do more convincing! :P)

Ummm let's see, what else. Oh! Well, there is the title of the book...
The Half-Blood Prince - Um, was there a point to this plot line? At all? No, seriously, AT ALL? It just seems to make a catchy title. What was it supposed to show? That Snape was great at potions? That he could be an excellent teacher if he actually tried? That Snape was a twisted kid who liked to make up spells that viciously maimed the recipient? All of these things seem to rather pale in comparison to him murdering Dumbledore. Honestly. It seemed very weak to be the entire plot of a book. The real thread that I followed most eagerly was Voldemort's backstory, although the routine of Harry walking into Dumbledore's office and hopping in the Pensieve got a little tedious. But seriously... what was the point of the HBP? Even the "big reveal" was anticlimactic and kinda cheeseball. "I, the Half-Blood Prince!" Okay, get over yourself Snapey.

Dumbledore's death - I cried so hard for the last chapters of the book. Just, non stop. Right up to the last page. Wah. Such powerful writing at parts, especially the awful thing where Harry couldn't scream, just had to watch as Dumbledore fell.. *shivers*. Poor Dumbledore. I have to admit that I was surprised... but in hindsight it makes a lot of sense. Now Harry has to make the final leg alone. But STILL. Wah.

OH! Remus/Tonks - WTF. No, really. W. T. F. (HAHA wtf also makes wednesday/thursday/friday, oh man, I amuse myself). So, Tonks was moping about for an entire book, and not acting herself, because she was lovesick?? How pathetic! Utterly and completely pathetic. I LIKED bubbly Tonks. Meh. And then of course there's the whole issue of my intense Remus/Sirius love (incidentally, I've never read a new book as a Puppy shipper, so it was interesting, or would have been if there had been ANY indication of Remus' grief. WTF, Jo, wtf.) and I justify it like this. Remus does not truly love Tonks. That's why he was dodging so determinedly, or, well, partially why. It does fit in his character to not want to impose himself on another person, but I think there's also Sirius lingering there. Poor Remus. *sniffles* But still, there's no direct reference to his grief for Sirius, who was at the very least his best friend! WTF Jo. She totally abandoned my very very favorite plot line. Hmph. There should be another book written, James Potter and his Two Best Friends who are Totally Gay and In Love, or maybe James Potter and the Marauders. Oh wait, there already is... SHOEBOX. *feels better* I think I might have to reread myself some shoebox. Yessiree.

OH, another thing, why the HELL didn't Sirius leave ANYTHING to Remus??? Again with the best-friendness, not to mention Remus looking even POORER and THINNER... someone get that man a steak! Or, a veggie burger, somehow I feel like Remus doesn't like meat in a sort of resistance to his wolfy half. Ya know? Um, but back to my point, WTF SIRIUS! Maybe there's a magical thing that says his possessions, as a Black, have to be bequeathed summarily, and can't be divvied up.

Um. *looks at her comments* I think I disliked the relationships of this book, liked the plot. Yeah. But I like PoA better. And the end scene of OotP was FAR superior, not to mention far longer! I mean with all the people around. The Department of Mysteries was just a genius setting. Loved that ending (except for, you know, SIRIUS DYING, but even that was really well done, so..).

Okay so, all that said, it's 2:48 PM, so I'm gonna make these comments short. Relatively.

2) Firefly STILL rocks my world. Of course there was no sense of conclusion to it at all *tear* but I still enjoyed it thoroughly. I'm getting a copy of the season as my belated graduation present from my cousins because I loved it so much, and need to just rewatch the entire season ASAP. I liked it that much. Mal is rapidly rising on my list of favorite TV characters, Jayne is fucking hilarious, Kaylee and Kaylee/Simon is just plain adorable, River is intriguing, terrifying, and amusing by turns (abrupt turns), and I just love all of it. Alllll of it. I also watched the Serenity trailer, and can I say OH MY GOD? The effects look so much better (obviously), and I love that the story focuses on River, who clearly has a lot left hidden that we need to find out. I am hoping and praying that the movie will be successful enough to warrant another TV series. Because that would be amazing.

3) Finally saw American Beauty, which is clearly a must see. And it was of course amazing. What can I say? If you've seen it, you just know. Wes Bentley was fantastic, and looked awfully like Tobey Maguire a lot of the time. Kevin Spacey may be a weird dude, but he can act. Annette Bening has emotional breakdowns like no one else. And the cinematography just blew my mind. The framing of some shots (particularly one where Rick's back takes up almost the entire frame, and Jane's pinned in the corner by his shoulder) and just in general, you know. A total work of art. Very very glad I saw it.

4) I liked this movie. (charlie and the chocolate factory) And that is said with exactly as much enthusiasm as it looks like. I wasn't bored, I enjoyed it, but I wasn't like OMG I want to see that again!!1! afterwards. Johnny's performance was a pleasant surprise (why am I surprised by him anymore? silly me) because I expected to be severely disturbed by it, it just looked so weird in the previews. But he was a mix of funny, strange, and poignant that somehow just worked. Yay for Johnny. Freddie Highmore was adorable. But overall, I kind of felt like I was watching the original movie with shinier machines, different (but not necessarily better) Oompa Loompa music (I love the songs in the first one!), and occasional odd detours. There weren't any new, interesting interpretations of the other kids or how they met their dooms (with the exception of squirrels, because, attacking squirrels? Too funny, while disturbing at the same time). So, I liked it. But that's about it.

5) HAH. Two loads of utter crap. (Timeline and King Arthur) Which saddens me, because I love medieval stuff, but I guess I'll have to stick to books for now. First of all, Paul Walker cannot act. Seriously, I think he's an actor by accident, because that's the only explanation. And he must bribe the people who hire him. Any line he says is just painful! And I didn't like the acting in King Arthur either. Plotlines were flat, arrows were shot, people were killed, and love was supposedly fallen in. Although I have to question that because chemistry? Nada. In either movie. So. Big fat no on both of these.

...

I just realized that this post was devoid of Ewan AND Queer as Folk! What?!

OH YEAH. I watched an Ewan movie! *phew* *edits list*
6) A Life Less Ordinary. This movie was adorable! Quirky and fun, I enjoyed it from start to finish. Ewan's hair disturbed me for a while, but I got over it because it's EWAN. My favorite part was when he was trying to make the ransom phone call and he just failed miserably. Hahahaha. cameron Diaz was absolutely perfect as well. Their interplay was priceless. Some parts were plain disturbing (the female cupid climbing up the front of the truck, bloody and maniacal, then getting crushed between the front of the truck and a boulder *winces*) but it was generally just entertaining and fun. Loved it, a lot. YAY EWAN.

So next on my Ewan list: The Pillow Book, Rogue Trader, Shallow Grave, Young Adam. And LONG WAY ROUND, if I possibly can. We'll see. But I do intend to see (almost) every movie of his by some point. Because he's Ewan, and I love him. Also watched about half an hour of The Phantom Menace today, and the only bearable part was Ewan. Well, and Liam.

About the ships, I actually feel the opposite... I found Harry/Ginny to not be cute at ALL, it was contrived and stupid and annoying and pointless, and had no depth or meaning to it at all. And I disagree, I don't think it will continue... I think the only part of the storyline was to show Harry sacrificing something for his quest that supposedly means a lot to him... without making him give up Ron and Hermione, because they are so crucial. So basically H/G was a stupid plot device.

Ron/Hermione, on the other hand, is kind of cute. I mean, it's a bit ridiculous, but it does have a sort of basis, where as H/G did NOT. And JKR didn't rush RHr (they didn't even get together in this book!) so I'm feeling better towards that one than H/G.

I am sad for our ship though :( However, I will continue to ship HHr, and their friendship, which I hope will pick up in the next book because it was almost abandoned in this one. Which made me more sad than anything. Like Hermione was so obsessed with jealousy over Ron that she just forgot about Harry. Meh.

I cried so long and so hard :( It was really painful and difficult!

That's interesting that you would say Sirius wasn't mentioned much... lots of people have said it almost felt like Sirius was present because they talked about him so much. And I guess I can see that, but I was really pissed that there was no direct mention of Remus's personal grief for Sirius. That's what I really wanted to see. Perhaps Remus helping Harry through the grief. *pokes JKR*

ON TO EWAN! :D

I was actually planning on reading [livejournal.com profile] dormida's new fic after I finish replying to my emails. I just haven't had time :( I can't wait, she never disappoints!

I'm not a Obi/Qui girl either, but that scene just broke my heart... how tender and loving it was... I totally see the basis for the ship. Aww. *sniff*

*Eats a cookie* Mmm! *drags you into the pile of cookies* We'll share! Hehe.

Ewanewanewanewanewanewanewanewanewan... etc times infinity plus one! :D
