Aug. 8th, 2005 12:01 pmWell I'm at my aunt and uncle's right now. All of the cousins from my mom's side are here, so it's kinda noisy but really nice because I don't often get to see them. The house is lovely if a tiny bit crowded ^_^ We're having a great time. In an hour we're leaving to tour the Ford truck manufacturing plant, which should be really cool.
I miss you all though! I've been talking to some of you through email, which is nice ^_^ I only have dialup here, and I'm probably only gonna get to check my email (including LJ comments) once a day, so I am pretty much absent this time. And I'm not going through withdrawal! Yay me. I need to wean myself off of hours and hours of LJ every single day because in college that's just not possible.
I'm compensating, however, by reading. A LOT. I finished two books in what, five days? I haven't read that fast in a long time. It's kind of how I escape having to be with people all the time. It's my replacement computer. Alas, I am now out of books that I brought, so I need to find something else! I think I might reread Hitchikers Guide. Hm.
But anyway, I read Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, and Luck in the Shadows by Lynn Flewelling, the first book in the Nightrunner trilogy. They were both absolutely amazing, if completely different genres :) I'll make an in depth post about both of them later, because I need to get my thoughts out.
But for now... Rach... Nightrunner is AMAZING. Absolutely fantastic. I mean, it's a fantasy novel directly down my alley, in the vein of Wheel of Time, for example, and at the same time there is CANON SLASH (er, is that even possible? Slash means taking people not together in canon and putting them together (in a gay way), right? lol) and it's not subtext, it's totally text! I mean they haven't kissed yet or anything (but godammit I was rooting for them to) but there are so many signs. Seregil is repeatedly referred to not having a preference as far as gender goes, and there are just all these little moments... Seregil catching himself staring at Alec, or wanting to touch his hair, and both of them getting extremely freaked out when the other's in trouble ("I don't know how many times a day I can stand to watch you almost die" - Seregil. Yes I know that line by heart. I also memorized his full name, Seregil i Korit Solun Merengil Bokthersa, because it's just so damn cool!) or Alec feeling a strange warmth and connection when he catches Seregil's eye. It's BEAUTIFUL. And it totally reminds me of Obi-wan/Anakin, not because of the personalities (if anything the personalities are switched) but because of the master/apprentice (padawan) dynamic they've got going on. It's so awesome and entertaining and like reading fanfic because I can totally read into everything they say and do about/with each other! I LOVE IT. And I LOVE YOU RACH for recommending it to me, you totally rock my world. ♥
Well I guess that's it for now... that was quite a rambling post, huh? Hope you all dont miss me TOO terribly ;) *hugs!*
ETA: I can't believe I forgot... I'M GETTING A CELL PHONE!!! For my 18th birthday!! :D Whee, finally! I was a little nervous abotu going to college without one, they're pretty essential these days. But now my mom's giving me one, YEY. :D I get to pick it out next week.

Date: 2005-08-09 11:12 pm (UTC)It is INDEED fantastic. I mean, there's definitely room for improvement in a few areas, but the writing is very good and the plot decent but the characters (Alec and Seregil, mostly, of course) just make it so excellent. I cannot wait til I get the next one!! It will be a few days because I'm not at home *tear* Um, one in depth analysis, coming up! Oh dear, the pressure, lol ^_^ Miss you hon! *hugs*
