Oooooh.

I just finished George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones, the first of the Song of Ice and Fire series. I'd read it before, but like 5 years ago, so I remembered basically nothing (EXCEPT THE DEATH OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTER >:( ). I am just... stunned, and so invested in all of these people. (Except how he KILLED MY FAVORITE CHARACTER, ughhhhhh so bitter.) What a magnificent tapestry Martin weaves, and I can't wait to find out where it goes next.

Dany! Oh my god. Dany is supposed to be this ominous threat to the Seven Kingdoms, but I am really so enamored of her. And she's thirteen. Married, widowed, pregnant but child died. Her personal journey over the course of the book is truly mindboggling, from timid little girl who fears the fierce Dothraki, to ferocious commander of her own khas. HOLY CRAP. I love her. And I love Ser Jorah's devotion to her. I loved Drogo too, and his surprising sweetness.

I also love Jon Snow. Oh Jon! Sent to the ends of the earth, out of sight and out of mind, unable to help the family he loves but who doesn't necessarily love him back as well. I want he and Arya to be reunited so badly I can taste it. In fact, I want Arya to be a sister of the Night Watch! She would be amazing, despite being NINE HOLY SHIT. What is up with all these tiny little girls doing these enormous things?!? I just. Wow. Arya is so impressive, and yet so young sometimes. The chapter where she watches her father die..... I almost couldn't read it.

FUCK YOU JOFFREY LANNISTER. Ugh. Psychotic little boy. I suppose the fact that his parents are TWINS kind of explains it, but ughhhhh hate hate hate HATE.

Poor little Sansa. She's such a vain, ditzy little creature, even up through the Lannister uprising and her father's imprisonment. It's only beaten into her when her beloved golden prince CHOPS OFF HER FATHER'S HEAD. *fists of raaaage* But now she really has the makings of a fascinating character, with her smoldering hatred of Joffrey, and I can't wait to see how that plays out.

I almost can't talk about Ned :( The grief is too fresh! But he's just... such a good person, such an honorable man who also loves passionately. It feels like the direction of everything is in his hands, and then... oops! He doesn't have a head anymore. D: I remember being TRULY shocked the first time around, because how could that be? HOW COULD THAT BE??? You don't kill your main character! Fucking hell! But that's part of Martin's genius. He really IS that ruthless! And it makes for damn good storytelling. (I have the same emotions about this death as I do about Wash in Serenity, in terms of a storytelling move - I am fucking impressed at the cojones it takes. But sad too :( )

I have ambiguous feelings toward Catelyn. Her hateful treatment of Jon is understandable but still hateful. Her obsessive grief over Bran is... a little much. And snatching Tyrion? How fucking arrogant can you get? Not to mention BELIEVING Littlefinger, ugggghhh so idiotic. She's definitely my least favorite of the Starks, probably because she isn't really a Stark. Still lots of southron in her. She's sometimes sympathetic (I felt bad for her when she got to Lysa and found that hey, my sister's gone NUTS) but in general I don't like her choices.

Robb is an oddly distant figure. I don't feel like I know him well at all. Which is strange, given that he's the eldest of the Stark children and now Lord of Winterfell. Hm.

I'm so fond of little Bran. It broke my HEART when Jaime pushed him from the window :( He's got a tough road ahead of him, but he's already bouncing back with spirit and determination, and I can't wait to see what role he (and Osha!) play in the coming winter.

Tyrion is very entertaining, and such a slippery character to get a grasp on. He showed such kindness to the Stark children, and then Catelyn had to go fuck that up, gods damn her. He could have been a powerful ally, and I would have been curious to see what side he would take, given his hatred of his father. His allegiances are still up in the air, really! Definitely one to keep an eye on, that little dwarf.

Okay, I just had to share :)

That's Song of Ice and Fire. ;-)

I loved "A Game of Thrones," but am spoiled on future books in ways that make me wanna just hang on to this one with my fingernails and not read them. (Because lots of other people die.

Lots.

LOTS.)

Martin is utterly brill, and a cool person, to boot! He's on my flist! [livejournal.com profile] grrm!

Even those kinds of spoilers displease me! :( Now I don't want to keep reading. Meh. I'll just brace myself for the crying.

Ha, I knew that, I swear! Doh.

Oh I love how many authors have LJs, it's so sweet. Does he ever talk about spoilery things?

Haha your icon is so necessary! I wish I had an allpurpose one like that!

Aww, sorry! :-/ Warning from me to you, then: stay AWAY from the "Song of Ice and Fire" wiki, because it's really bad about the "you should know this already" attitude.

He does not. He mostly talks about politics, football, book signings and when new merchandise is coming and where you can get it.

Ohhhh, yeah. I love this icon. It may be my favorite. It's gackable, if you want! I didn't make it, but the credit info's in my summary.

Dude I love this series. GRRM is actually quite possibly my favourite author. Ever.
Jaime fast becomes one of my fave characters ever (only possible if you mindblock the whole twincest thing *shudder*)
My second fave is Sansa; she's forced to grow up so much, thank god.
You're gonna love the rest of the series, even though he will break your heart a lot more.
But he's taking so long with the next book! The fifth was released in 2005, and he still hasn't finished the next one.
Meanie.
Anyway, here is some <3. Now go read the next four!

Ooooh, Jaime becomes sympathetic? That's REALLY interesting. There were definitely hints that he's not as hateful as his father or Cersei, and I'm excited to learn more about the golden knight :D I bet he'll be a fave of mine too. The twincest also doesn't really bother me, given my extensive involvement in the SPN fandom - perhaps not something to brag about, but true nonetheless :P

I didn't realize there were already FIVE out. Wasn't A Feast of Crows the fourth? What came after that?

I'm so excited!

Yeah sorry Feast for Crows is the 4th, it's just with Storm of Swords being divided into two books,I automatically think 5 instead.
Tbh, I'm not a big fan of Dany. I would like her if she decides to stay in the East. I don't want her to go back and rule Westeros.
I'm actually weird about female characters. There aren't many I like. The only ones in ASOIAF I can really stand are Arya and Sansa. The rest... nup.
Jaime really is nothing like Cersei. Tragic hero=<3
