Drive by rec: Alone Together by
buffyaddict_fic. Band of Brothers, gen, Tipper and Liebgott centric, 22,000 words. I was intrigued when I saw it on my flist, mostly because I LOVE Liebgott, and I was surprised to find an extremely well-written, moving, powerful portrait of two young men who build a connection only to have it snatched away by a mortar in Carentan. Tipper's point of view is delightful - essentially an original character, given he only has one scene in BoB, but I fell in love with him immediately. I especially adore his perspective on Joe's slightly manic nature. But as poignant as the first part is, the second part, where Lieb has to soldier on by himself, survive Bastogne and Landsberg... well. Let's just say it got me crying. There's only 2 parts (of 4) posted so far, but she has them written and they should be up in a couple days.
If you're a Band of Brothers fan, you want to read that. Just sayin'. :)
This story isn't helping my problem with being COMPLETELY HEAD OVER HEELS for Liebgott. He's vying for #1! Crazy, I know!

Date: 2010-01-13 01:03 pm (UTC)You will LOVE this one, omg. It's got the best portrayal of the trauma of war I've seen yet, but most specifically the trauma for a Jewish man. It's really something else.

Date: 2010-01-19 03:24 pm (UTC)The spellcaster!au is Winters/Nixon with Nix as it's main focus. It's set in the mini, so there is the chance to see Liebgott, but we don't follow him explicitly. Sorry. It's still a really good story, though. Thumbs up all around!

Date: 2010-01-19 05:20 pm (UTC)“He’s coming to you straight out of OCS – a second looey by the name of Lewis Nixon. And if the name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s as thoroughbred as they come. His grandfather built the Navy.”
“And he’s high-strung?”
“He’s a damn spellcaster, Bob. You know the type – I don’t care what the manual we give the enlisted men says, spellcasters are unstable as hell. But I’ve seen this boy throw some amazing magic around. He’s grade-A, no mistake about it.”
“Thank you, I appreciate that, Sir,” said Sink. “And if he’s that good – hell, I can overlook a pet cat, if that’s what it takes to keep him sane.”
Taylor shook his head. “Not a cat. Or a goat. A person.”
Sink leaned in. “We’re not talking about a woman, are we, Sir? I can’t take a woman into combat just because she keeps my spellcaster calm, I don’t care how good the magic is.”
Taylor grinned. “No, not a woman. Another officer. It’s another lucky break for you, too, since apparently they only met at OCS.”
“His name?”
Taylor shook his head. “You’ll figure it out soon enough. But I don’t want to start you out with the idea that man’s only useful because he keeps Nixon calm. He’s a talented fellow; I would have sent him to you regardless. Keep that in mind when you figure out who he is.”
“I will, Sir,” said Sink.
All the more reason for you to READ THE STORY, ANNE. ;)

Date: 2010-01-13 12:31 pm (UTC)but, man, leibgott has always vied for the top spot in my book, maybe because he's small and angry and jewish, but this fic just reminds me of why I watched the series straight through two times in a row and forced about three other people to watch it with me, haha. and now I want to watch it again.

Date: 2010-01-13 01:09 pm (UTC)The story definitely captures why BoB is so riveting! And it's also turned up to 11! I've been rewatching pretty much constantly for the last month, haha. My VLC playlist always has at least 3 or 4 BoB eps opened in the last couple days just so I could watch this moment or that. It's so goood!

Date: 2010-01-18 09:59 pm (UTC)Lieeeeeb! Every time I watch I find more things to love about him. He is very small and angry and Jewish and I find all of these things delightful. I also really enjoy his pigtail-pulling with Webs, it's seriously adorable. The reason this fic gave for that - that Webs wasn't at Bastogne so Lieb could actually stand to be around him - was really interesting and changes how I view those episodes to some extent. But he just has so many different moments, from adorably cutting hair (which is trufax! Bill Guarnere talks about it in his book) to fighting with Guarnere on the ship to playing Pop The German after Alley gets hurt to telling Webster he "loves to read! Flash Gordon mostly" to seeing the camp and basically falling apart in front of our eyes, oh my god. ;____; He just has the most compelling arc and emotional journey and augh I love him BEYOND ALL REASON. This story just cemented that.
Um, I'll shut up now. :D (And you should totally watch it again!)
ETA: HAHAHA I totally forgot I had already replied to this comment. Well, now with extra Liebgott fangirling! :D
