Happy 4th of July, to all of my fellow Americans! I hope you're having great evenings filled with grilled foods and fireworks!

I am not always the most patriotic of people - I am all too cynical about the American national character, and many aspects of our culture make me want to run to Pluto. But that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate that we have such a unique country, a place whose history and diversity are one-of-a-kind. That diversity obviously leads to problems, but it also leads to a beautiful meeting of people from all kinds of backgrounds. Right now, I have a little bit more faith than usual because we have an intelligent GQMF in office - I know he's not perfect, but he is a massive step in the right direction, and I think four (and hopefully eight) years of him at the helm can only be good for us. The moment when we actually chose him as our president was kind of surreal and wonderful.

So happy birthday, America. I think we're still going through some pretty epic growth pains, but we're pretty nifty anyway. :)

I do feel like a terrible American today though. I have spent the fourth of July entirely in my lab, working on my research presentation but also looking at pictures of German footballers, watching German football, listening to German music (LU-LU-LU, LUKAS PODOLSKI!), and generally not fitting the spirit of the day. I did go to a barbecue and eat hot dogs and play with sparklers last night though! :D?

I beg of you all to remember instead the past few months when I could not shut up about American Marines and Paratroopers, mmkay? Haha. And in that vein, I'd also like to say a thank you and spare a moment for the brave men and women serving our country - no matter the validity of the war, the people fighting it have all of my respect. We are so grateful for all that you do.

Happy birthday, America!

I'ma gonna share some vids with you. First, the studio version of Humba Tatera (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hef73cw4YHk). Pay attention to the first minute or so.

Next: EURO2008 Quarterfinals. Germany beats Portugal. LuLu leads the German corner in Humba Tatera and is generally adorable (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1rPS7rKmzY). (psst! you can also catch that on the file you downloaded from me!)

Best bit. The team leaves for the locker room. Lukas runs to the crowd one more time. SCHWEINI WAITS. They walk back together.

Oh, Anne. HEARTS IN MY EYES. HEARTS IN MY EYES.

Super lulz, though understandable from my perspective, which admittedly is neither here nor there. ;D

I did the same (football obsessing), with a break to watch my neighbors blast up the best fireworks and watch bits of the Galaxy/Sounders MLS game. Though honestly, if you were working hard for science, in America, I don't think anyone should have a problem with that. ♥
