Sep. 25th, 2005 01:29 pmSo I saw The Constant Gardener yesterday, and it was really good! I enjoyed it a lot. Don't let the name fool you, honestly, because it has nothing to do with the movie.
First of all, I think Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes did an amazing job. It's hard to imagine Ralph, who plays a kind, loving, determined diplomat in this film, as playing the ultimate evil (Voldy!!), but I'm sure he'll be great because he's such a powerful actor. And I love Rachel, cause I love The Mummy and The Mummy Returns (yes, both of them, shush) so it was great to see her in a more serious role. The movie plays with your emotions, forcing you to reevaluate conclusions you made earlier. My friend Rob and I were dismayed and disgusted when Tessa (Rachel's character) offered sex for information, and immediately felt negatively about it, but later, after her death, you find out that she never intended to fulfill the promise, and she thought the guy who accepted the offer (then declared his love for her) was a total creep. And you liked him at the beginning of the movie too! It was all very fascinating and convoluted. The story's a little hard to follow, I definitely think it could bear another viewing, but it's a very engrossing movie. Extremely well done. The camera work is gorgeous, visually stunning, and I don't know.. I just loved it.
I had to put this outside of the cut, because I found it so amazing. The movie had such a powerful ending, an emotionally resounding finish, that when the credits came up - no one in the theater moved. The music started playing, a soft African song with a beautiful male voice singing, and we just sat there and listened. Behind the credits there were clips of African people dancing and celebrating, and it was just beautiful. For a few minutes we all just sat there, literally. It was that affecting of a movie.
You should all go see it!

Yay for fic! I'll await it with much excitement!
I actually haven't gotten to start Wraeththu yet... :( I don't read very much, and right now I'm in the middle of another trilogy anyways, which I started before you recommended the book to me. Soooo... it might be quite a while before I get there, I'm sorry!
