Oct. 20th, 2005 09:32 pmI was being all optimistic and glass-half-full about Serenity's box-office performance - but I just read an article that pretty much shatters all hope I have of a sequel. To make things worse, my local theater is taking Serenity off the screen tomorrow (the last showing starts in 10 minutes) and I never got to see it with my friend Sean. Which I was really, really looking forward to. *sad little sigh*
On the plus side, I received my Serenity visual companion and novel in the mail today. They're pretttttty. I read the first chapter of the novel and it's quite good! The narrative is as though it's Mal's stream of consciousness (at least in this chapter, the battle of Serenity Valley) so it's got the Firefly-ian type of syntax to it. The author does a pretty good job of imitating the way they speak.
I also have a great Firefly fic rec... it's absolutely hilarious. Big Damn Zombies, Sir by Shrift. I highly recommend you check it out :)

Date: 2005-10-21 02:09 am (UTC)You lot should also be proud of me. Look at this LJ activityness *facepalm* which, according to spellcheck and oh, common sense, could also be called activeness. Which is, you know, a real word and doesn't involve mangling the English language. I deserve a cookie. Or at least a gold star. ;)

Date: 2005-10-21 04:03 am (UTC)Lets say they finish in the US with 25 million. International revenue is usually equal to the same as the US amount. But since this movie isnt as known, and so wont be hitting as money countries as bigger name movies, lets say it makes a pathetic 15 million.
Oh look, break-even!
From there the next big money maker comes through Pay-Per-View (and to a smaller extent airplanes). Then HBO, rental sales and home DVD sales.
1 million fans buying the 20 DVD is another huge amount.
From there, theres still a small amount of money in networks. Sci-Fi will probably pic it up to air a few years from now.
From all that, Universal would have to consider the "franchise" possibility. Serenity was a no name movie. Yes, firefly fans, but to most people, it was new.
Serenity 2 (or Clever Name: Serenity) needs less marketing and such, and would get a bigger opening day if people who watched serenity liked it.
Thats up to Universals market analysis team though.
I think a sequal has a good chance.
(bitch at me in 4 years if nothing has been anounced)
