Jul. 16th, 2005 10:38 pmOkay so. I didn't make any freak-out posts prior to going to the HBP party because the internet was dead here! Perhaps this is good, for you have all been spared the ridiculousness. Instead, I am now posting as I am at page 516 already, having read until 5 AM last night and then almost constantly today.
So. The PARTY. Me and my cousin, sister, brother, and cousin's son went together. We all (except my brother) dressed up as wizards TRYING to dress like Muggles. This was totally a last minute idea, executed in the hour before we left, but isn't it so awesome? We were crazy and silly looking, and totally unique. We didn't win the costume contest, but that's okay! It was lots of fun. Also, the best part of the party was a Scavenger Hunt, where there were 60 'Timeline events' that you had to collect from places throughout the town (yes, 60!) We arrived super early, at like 4 oclock, so we got an early start, but we only finished collecting the clues after 10 PM, and we had only stopped for dinner! Then if you wanted to you could put the events (from the books, obviously) in chronological order! Us being super nerds, we plopped ourselves down in a coffee shop and did just that. It was difficult and long, but so much fun. So we go to hand it in at like 11:45, and the booth is GONE. So we can't turn it in for a chance to win a set of the first 5 books. Wah. But by then we were emotionally attached to the piece of paper, which was creased and slightly damp from sweat (it was quite hot), so we didn't mind getting to keep it. It was great, great fun. Whee.
ETA: The cutest costume EVER was two little babies (twins!) dressed as mandrakes! They were in little pots and EVERYTHING! Oh how much I love them. We got a picture, so I will post it as soon as I am able!
Then we drove home and about 5 minutes later Jeff (cousin's husband) arrived with a copy of HBP!! (He got it at a grocery store for 15 bucks... it was 30 bucks at the party) I immediately plopped into a chair and started reading. My brother had to go with Meg (cousin) to the store to get it because they only allowed one copy per customer. So he got home as I was on page 10 and started reading too. I read (as stated above) til 5 AM, got to page 170, and went to sleep until 2 PM. I'm still not done, but I will be posting a large post with my thoughts when I do finish.
For now, some feelings about the book so far...
Ron/Hermione AND Harry/Ginny are becoming canon?!? My two LEAST FAVORITE ships?! Are you shitting me. This is actually making the book quite difficult to read, because I had totally convinced myself they weren't going to happen. I mean, where the fuck are Harry's feelings for Ginny coming from? SO RANDOM. *fumes* If it becomes the "One Great Big Happy Weasley Family" at the end of the books, I will be so pissed. cheap!!
And also... *rings the death knoll for Harry/Hermione* I'm so sad. But... I know when to admit defeat. *sad little sigh*
And Remus isn't even around much at all. Jo's so mean to tease us with a lovely character like that and then just use him as a minorly important plot device for about 2 pages. Rar.
Despite all that, I'm enjoying the book quite a lot. Jo's writing style continues to amaze and amuse. Absolutely love Dumbledore. Still no clue who the HBP is. Love the pensieve scenes, and the insight into Voldemort's past. Draco's absence is so weird for the dynamic of the book, but I know whatever he's planning is going to be the climax of the book. I don't like Slugwhatshisface. I positively adore Luna now, isn't that funny? And I like that the overall tone of the book is not relentlessly depressing, it's pretty much business as usual at Hogwarts (the worst part of OotP was Umbridge, and how she made every day a living hell. It's not like that any more, which is good). So. I'm interested to see how it ends, obviously.
Now for lots of space for people who want to comment without seeing spoilers...
So, back to HBP! I'll probably be finished tonight.

Date: 2005-07-18 05:03 pm (UTC)How can you say there was nothing there for HHr? o.O THAT's what I've never understood. Their friendship is so rock solid, and in my opinion that's what a fruitful relationship is built on. Even if they don't realize it as their hormones are strangling them, I do believe that further on in life (if they both live... eep) they will realize how deep their connection is. But alas, not yet!
I'll head over to your journal and check it out :)
I think you met me through QaF... not sure though, I don't remember. Sorry >.

Date: 2005-07-19 12:02 am (UTC)Haha... I myself am fully convinced that Remus and Sirius were lovers in their Hogwarts years, and that Remus still loves Sirius. That's why he was so reluctant to be with Tonks ^_^

Date: 2005-07-19 08:53 am (UTC)Sorry, I'm not talking about anything in your entry.. This.. This video that I stumbled upon. I watched it and sat here and cried my eyes out THREE TIMES. Your "Poprocks and Coke" one? Look, I even said in my journal entry! I am astounded. I have a truley TALENTED friend. I just can't get over that I know this arteeeest personally. I left a comment on the site and everything.. XDD I traced back to see how in the HELL I got to that video, and I saw I was at your info! Wtf!? Anyway, this video is AMAZING. I have, since I read HBP, been in this awkward stage. I don't know what to accept. Now I know that my heart is definatly broken by the H/Hr withdrawl in HBP. I mean, broken. Like, I cried more over this than I did over the end of HBP, and I cried A LOT over that. I mean, here I was, thinking that I handled the change of relationships in HBP great, when THIS happens. I watch the video! I start crying, and wailing about how they did not have this mental/physical cemistry, and begging the nobody in my room that HBP just never happened. I mean, those were the DAYS. XD They... They had a RELATIONSHIP. Platonic or otherwise, they had one. It doesn't even seem like they do in HBP. This video made me cry so much I was naseated. o_o; I think it was because when I read HBP, I was dry of any H/Hr in my mind for a long time, I was mopey and not myself. But this video brought me back to the friendship, chemistry, care, closeness, love, understanding, EVERYTHING that they had. So now, I am like, sooo sad.
AND I WAS DOING SO WELL. Dammit. XD
God, I loved this video. [/rant.]

Date: 2005-07-19 06:06 pm (UTC)I made that video at the height of my HHr love... PoA was such an HHr movie, and I knew I had to encapsulate that with a music video (my favorite form of fanart) and so that was the first video I ever actually completed. Just because I loved the subject matter so much. I should probably go watch it again myself, just to remind me of the strength of that relationship, because I totally agree - HBP ruined it. Hermione seems more like an annoyance to Harry than anything in this book. *sighs* I don't really understand it. It seems like Jo caved to the "obvious" that everyone was yelling about. Well, not everyone, obviously, cause there's people like you and me. But I know that I will always be a fan of the HHr relationship through the first 5 books, and who knows, maybe we'll see it come back in book 7. I'm crossing my fingers!
*hugs* I'm sorry I made you cry!
