Dollhouse: intentionally creepy!

Dollhouse, Joss Whedon, and the Strange and Difficult Path of Feminist Dudes: Some Thoughts - This is a truly excellent blog post about Dollhouse and why it works. It's an excellent perspective on Dollhouse as a show entirely about consent, and discusses how in order to deal better with nasty issues, the metaphors necessarily have to be uglier. Also contains an interesting thought on how Topher may be a self-projection of Joss himself, in that it is his job to hire beautiful women and make them do what he wants, and how that's sometimes a little creepy. Well worth a read, particularly if you dismissed Dollhouse because it creeps you out or something.

I really hope this show gets another season! Same with Castle.

I saw Jeremy today for the first time in a couple weeks! I missed his faaaace. We have coffee plans for Friday, yays. \o/

I graduate from college in just over three weeks. o.O

I don't really have anything else to say! I just wanted to share the Dollhouse link. Hope you all had a good Hump Day!

I've heard rumors IRL that Dollhouse has already been cancelled but haven't seen anything on my flist to substantiate this. (Actually, from the professor with whom I've been cultivating a vaguely Jeremy-esque relationship. I refer to him as "my best friend Dr. G" because I am forever going to his office hours; he's the professor for the advanced organic lab and my school has a program where upperclass students work with a group of incoming freshmen who all have the same advisor, and I'll be working with him & his advisees. And today he asked if I'd be willing to continue working on the project we've started in advanced lab, since it's evident that we won't finish it, and he probably won't finish it over the summer. So that's exciting... even though it means continuing to work with a potentially carcinogenic epoxide that smells like fruity vomit ass death.)

And now I'm wondering if it would be weird to email him that Dollhouse link. And also this link, which my econ major bff saw and emailed to me.

Interestingly, in that essay, there is probably not a single point the author makes about "Dollhouse" that I disagree with.

I still don't want to go back watching the show.

I dismissed "Dollhouse" because it bores me when it's not creeping me out. :-/ No matter how much social value it might have, it just wasn't worth it to keep going there every single week. I'll endure a lot of stuff for a show I love (oh, God, you have no idea how rocky my relationship with "Heroes" was from about 3x03 to 3x14--I almost gave up), but there needs to be something I love enough to endure it for. And on "Dollhouse," there just isn't. It's a world where virtually everything is creepy or depressing, nearly everyone is sick and shitty, and there are no real victories, because at the end of every episode, Echo goes and gets back in the box.

It may be truthful, it may be gritty, it may be the most powerful story Joss has ever told, shedding the most light on the things in this world that most of us wish weren't there.

But frankly, I'd rather watch a show that doesn't make me want to drink until the world stops feeling hopeless.

That article is wonderful! It makes a lot more sense to me now that I'm invested in the show. I really hope it doesn't get cancelled. *crosses fingers*
