exsequar: (BoB Nixters how bout Jersey?)
[personal profile] exsequar
I've spent the last few weeks rewatching the whole of Band of Brothers in 720p HD (unfff) and capping the shit out of it in preparation for what may be an epic picspam if I ever get my act together. I really have spent far too many waking hours on this project, but you know, it's really not hard on the eyes, so I haven't exactly minded. ;) I was talking to my best friend, who has watched the first few episodes, and she mentioned how she still doesn't know who the heck anyone is, so I offered to do a primer picspam of the characters. I was just gonna email them to her with the character names, but I started going through and realized, oh right, there are over 20 characters I love in this series! That would make for a good picspam! Before I knew it, I had 68 caps on my hands. *facepalm* So here is what may be considered several things - a primer for anyone who hasn't seen BoB (it's NON-SPOILERY), an exceedingly pretty overview of the cast for anyone who already loves it, and a simple delight for the senses because let me tell you, some of these caps are stunning. God bless 720p.

So if you like pretty men, particularly ones in uniform, have I got a treat for you. Twenty-six of them, to be precise.

Also, the caps are BIG. None of this namby-pamby shrinking and recoloring bullshit. They are big (1000x625 px) and hi-res and unadulterated. PLEASE use them for icons or whatever you want, and if you want the FULL full size (1440x900) of anything, let me know!

Disclaimer: This is by no means comprehensive. I can think of at least 6 guys I left out, and I know some of them are beloved by others. My only defense is that if I had capped every character thoroughly, I would have twice as many caps as I do now, and that's a lot. Please forgive me!

I'm going to close with the best of the best, but otherwise we're going to go in order of my mostest favorite to just kind of favorite. So let's begin with the one, the only:

MAMA BEAR! I mean - Carwood Lipton! Lip is the most earnest, humble, and sweet man there ever was. He loves all of his boys unconditionally, and he doesn't even realize how much he means to them.

He also has these huge puppy eyes that I love to no end. And a badass scar.

This is Lip falling in love with his husband. I won't say any more! You'll just have to watch. :D

My most frequent response to Lip's face is to go OMG CAN I GIVE YOU A HUG?!?? He's the darlingest darling there ever WAS. He's played by DONNIE WAHLBERG - oh yes, former New Kid on the Block and brother of Marky Mark. I respect him all the more because in real life, Donnie is a spastic earnest CHEESEBALL, so for him to pull off such a solid and quiet character speaks volumes for his talent. Yup! ♥♥

This, my friends, is RONALD FUCKING SPEIRS. You better respect. Or he will cut you. A lot. With several bayonets and his cold, dead, sexy sexy eyes.

...My relationship with Speirs is a little complicated.

It gets less complicated when he smiles like THAT though. *fluttery sigh*

Did I mention he's exquisitely beautiful? FRECKLES. Speirs is the strangest and most wonderfulest character. Again, you'll have to watch to fully appreciate why! What makes it even better is he was REAL.

Meet Joe Liebgott. I have an inordinate fondness for this boy - he's another crazy one with a heart of gold. He loves to pick fights, he always seems to be simmering on a low burn, and he REALLY likes to shoot Germans. Which is fair enough, given that he's Jewish. Right here, Winters is taking Joe's ammo so that he won't kill the German POWs he has to take back to camp. Oh Joe.

It helps that he's unspeakably pretty. I spend a lot of his scenes yearning to play with his hair. He's cocky and loud and I love him.

He also has some of the most poignant moments of the entire series. I think this cap is my favorite I took in the whole series. The way the shadows fall on his face, the sheer misery in his posture. I am just blown away by the sheer extremes this character hits, and I love him more every time through.

And this lovely lad is Doc Eugene Roe. He of the pointy nose and blue-black hair and perpetual little worried frown and skilled and soothing hands. Doc Roe is about a billionty shades of adorable and wonderful and Easy would be lost without him.

The detail in this cap is simply exquisite. The scraggly stubble, eyelashes brushing his cheeks, little cold red nose and ears, loooong fingers, eyes to drown in. SIGH. And I see the tiny frown! I see it! *gives him a million hugs*

Aldfkjlsdkjf his sad little face and his spiky hair and augh my heart. You cannot know the true extent of our love for the dear Doc until you watch episode six. I promise your heart will implode a few times.

This is Doc taking care of his Babe. No really, that's his name! Well, nickname. Whatever. LOOK ROE IS SMIIILING! My heart is doing flippy flops you guys! Meeep.

I think Babe Heffron's is too. How can it NOT? Boy's not made of stone! (His nooose omg.)

Let's have a look at Babe when he's not imitating an icicle. This is Babe the Innocent, he of the dorky toothy smile and the big nose and the perfectly groomed ginger hair. The boy from South Philly. ♥

And this is our Babe with a bit of wear and tear. I love this cap - it's like a painting.

And now I'd like to introduce you to the other boy from South Philly - Bill "Gonorrhea" Guarnere! Don't let his forbidding JAW OF DOOM fool you -

He's secretly an enormous softy who adores other Boys From South Philly. Bill is one of the strongest characters in the whole series - the actor is phenomenal.

He also has the most delightful laugh I've ever seen. His mouth is just so comically enormous! (Insert dirty jokes here yadda yadda :P) Oh Bill. <3 (I SEE YOU THAR LIPTON WITH YER GIGGLY FAAACE!)

At this point, they're all equally my favorites, so let's have some play time with Harry Welsh. He of the gappy teef and blonde wispy curls. He may look like a Man In Charge, but really -

He's just THE TINIEST LITTLE BOY OF ALL TIME OMG I LOVE HIM. See the banner for this spam? He's the one on the left. The guy on the right? IS 5'7". AHAHA TINY MIDGET HARRY WELSH! We love him and his sparkling impish eyes and dimples, eeee.

And boy sure cleans up nice. THE GAPPY TEEFS! *flap flap* Harry is so ridic adorable, ugh. <3

Next up: Don Malarkey. With bonus Joe Toye, who we'll see briefly again later. But MALARK! I love his little face. I think his story is one of the most tragic in the whole series. I somehow managed to miss capping all of his early delightfulness, so we get some solemn caps here, but he is really a ray of sunshine, that Malark. <3333

This is the best cap I could get from this scene, but he looks so beautiful in the sunshine. I do have such a soft spot for them gingers!

AUGH. *wraps him up in a huge bear hug and never lets go*

And here's another shot of our intrepid Joe Toye. He's awesome, I just don't happen to have many caps of him!

Here's Malark's partner in crime: Skip Muck. Known to many of you as the Trickster! :D He is truly delightful in this series, and I only wish he'd gotten more screen time. He ALSO looks lovely in the sunshine, om nom.

Really, really pretty. Did you think Richard Speight could be so pretty? Me neither! Muuuck. He's another super darling. <3

And their third playmate: Alex Penkala, who somehow manages to get much less screen time and development than the other two despite being with them all the time. *hands* Boy's still adorable, n'aw.

You might sit up and take notice, because yeah, David Webster is PRETTY. Eoin Bailey was in Center Stage and Fight Club if you're going "hey, I know that guy!" He really is almost unbearably pretty, gosh. As another picspam put it, he went to the same school of pretty as Jensen Ackles. HONESTLY.

Anywho, Webs likes to give chocolate to little boys and then smile adorably at them. *smishes him*

He also has THE MOST BEAUTIFUL EYES IN THE WORLD HOLY GOD. I mean. What? (Loooook at them! Gyah.) Webs is a bit of a village idiot in the series, which is COMPLETELY unfair because the real David Webster was a brilliant and insightful author who went into service simply so he could experience the war from the ground and then convey it to the world. I have to get his book sometime.

BULL RANDLEMAN! Boy gets a whole episode that might as well be called Bull Randleman Is A Total Badass. Because he is. But an adorable badass whom all his men love! Played by the delightful Michael Cudlitz, who tweeted me when I mentioned watching Band of Brothers asking why I wasn't following him, WHAT. Ahaha, my life.

Bull likes cigars. A lot. Yup!

Awww, George Luz! (And to his left, Frank Perconte.) He's the class clown, the one always pulling faces and doing impressions of superiors and generally making everyone laugh. I adore him. He's the other tiny one up in the banner, hollering away with Harry. <3333

He likes to talk at the theater! Mama Lipton does NOT approve. <3

I mostly love the colors in this cap, but hiiii Luz hi. *draws pink sparkly hearts*

IT'S BUCK COMPTON BABY. Another incredibly tragic tale, played beautifully by Neal McDonough. His crinkly little eyes!

Oh Buck. The consummate soldier. ♥

This is Donald Hoobler, an adorable little jokester.

And one more, because this is another one of my favorites. The starkness, the shadows, his face.

This here is the very adorable Shifty Powers. I didn't even notice him til the last episode on my first go round, but keep an eye out for him! He's got the sweetest southern accent (from Virginia) and I adore him.

It helps that he's RIDICULOUSLY PRETTY. Awww, Shifty! <33333

This here's Johnny Martin, professional badass. He's just uniformly awesome, getting the men in line and getting shit done.

Alton More here ain't around much, but he takes some startlingly beautiful pictures. Like this one!

Good ol' Popeye Wynn! Another freaking adorable southern boy.

Ahahahaha, Captain Dickweed Ross Herbert Sobel! David Schwimmer plays an amazingly good JACKASS. With pretty eyes. Heehee.

Tony Garcia, a totally random darling of mine. Boy has like one line, but he reminded me of Gerard Way the first time I saw him, sooo he just stuck with me. Hi there!

Speaking of random, HI JAMES MCAVOY HI. His character's something Miller, but he's around for the blink of an eye. Regardless - PRETTY. :D And young!

BUT EVEN BETTER YOU GUYS OMG IT'S LEE ADAMA I mean Lieutenant Foley! HEEE HI LEE HI! Mostly he runs around looking cold and yelling at people for a couple episodes. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. LEEEEE. :DDDD

This brings us to our shooting stars, the two and only, WINTERS AND NIXON!

To be more precise, let me introduce the delightful Lewis Nixon and the spectacular Dick Winters. This is the first conversation in the entire series, and it will put hearts in your eyes immediately. Nix, a Yale boy from mucho money, suggests that he should take Dick, a backwards farmboy, to Chicago some time. Yup. I love them more than words can say. Dick, the straight laced officer with a completely solid head and "no flaws, no vices, no sense of humor" according to his Nix, hee. Nix, the freewheeling intelligence officer, Dick's permanent right hand man and great lover of the whiskey. They shouldn't work at all, but they completely and utterly do.

But this is not a NIXTERS picspam (Nixterrrs!). That is for another time. Instead I shall treat you to visions of their lovely faces.

Mmm. I love a ginger in uniform. DO WE SENSE A THEME?

I also enjoy dirty gingers with mussed hair and vaguely confused faces. <333

What how did that get in here?!? O:)

This cap is just startling in its clarity and sharpness. His eyes, dear god.

HIS EYES, DEAR GOD.

But of course the best Winters is a smiling Winters, and literally the only person who can get that out of him is - you guessed it - Nix! ♥

Which brings me to my boyfriend the LUSH. Look at his huge eyes! His porcelain skin! His soft and combed hair! This doesn't last very long...

But I can't rightly say I mind! Unf. Stubbbbble. Unf unf.

I love his full mouth and his slightly sleazy smirks. A lot.

I LOVE his scrunchy faced amusement at his boys and their silliness. I love that he conducts their impromptu singalong with his finger. &NIX;!

But most of all, I love his face. His rounded little nose particularly. Nix Nix Nix!

"Goin' my way?" (Actualfax quote! You can't make this shit up!)

And that, my friends, is (the majority of) Easy Company!

Don't they look so lovely in their PT gear?

Now... POP QUIZ!

Heehee, just kidding. I'll help you out! L to R: Harry Welsh, Buck Compton, ???, Joe Toye, George Luz, Dick Winters, Floyd Talbert, Don Malarkey, Skip Muck, Doc Roe, and my boyfriend Lewis Nixon! Watch BoB twice and you, too, can name them all from a tiny picture of their dirty faces! :D

Whew, that was fun! I hope you enjoyed it too. <333 There's more to come, if there's interest! I have >4000 hi-def caps, so um. Yes. MOAR. :D

I promise you, this series is worth your time. This is a beautiful piece of storytelling and character building, simple as that. Also, though, it's fascinating and moving and educational about a very important time in the world's history. You won't regret it!

You're welcome! I had the vast advantage of watching the whole thing for the first time with four huge fans who knew every little character and talked a lot so I could follow who and what was going on. We also watched all in one go so I could more easily remember faces from episode to episode. It still took me a while to catch on but now I know everyone like the back of my hand! I hope that you make it all the way through because it is so, so worth it. :)

I've only watched a few episodes of BoB, but the one thing I always remember is that one lieutenant (Speirs, I think?) running across the town right in front of the German tanks to deliver a message...then running back.

sdlfkjlsdkf yes. I'll tell you a sekrit - that shot of Lip falling in love with his husband? That's when he watches Speirs do THAT. He knows Speirs is nuts but he just can't help but fall ass over teakettle because he's made of so much win. :D An excellent memory to take with you, hee.

My 10th grade English teacher had us watch a couple episodes and I saw several during a marathon on the History Channel, I think. I plan to download it soon so I can properly squee over it.

I'm glad they're making a miniseries about the Pacific front, and I'm hoping they will make a miniseries that focuses on the 442nd Infantry.

I still can't get over the fact Endless Mike (from The Adventures of Pete & Pete) is in this miniseries.

Ooooo, if you ever want to get together for a watching party, I am SO DOWN WITH THAT. I can also give you my hires copies if you have somewhere to keep them! It's VERY worth it, especially with a show with such great cinematography. We need to hang out soon anyhow! I'm back in school but I can always do coffee on a weekend or we could hang out at one of our apartments!

I'm definitely looking forward to the Pacific one, though it has a lot to live up to and sounds like it'll be a totally different format.

Awwwww, LUZ! I find it hilarious that you remember him from that. I've never heard of it before but it looks adorable. :D Luz is deeply precious.

*sigh* I love Band of Brothers but I find it incredibly hard to rewatch. Parts of it are just soooo gutwrenching.

Date: 2010-01-07 05:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] exsequar.livejournal.com
It's very painful, but I have the ability to experience something painful and then just compartmentalize it away as I enjoy the rest of it. Believe me, The Breaking Point in particular had me in tears on my rewatch, but I still manage to package that pain away and enjoy the rest. I think it helps that they chose (purposefully, obviously) to focus the most on the men who made it through the whole war - in this spam I think only 2 die, though more are wounded. So I'm okay with getting emotionally attached to them. IDK. I do understand where you're coming from though.

I should mention that my favorite among the boys who don't get much screentime are:

Moe Alley, Pat Christenson, and Joe Ramirez.

I need to watch this again. There was a time when I'd watch my favorite episodes (Day of Days, Bastogne, Points) over and over in a single day.

Date: 2010-01-07 01:26 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] exsequar.livejournal.com
I mostly remember Alley for getting all shot up in Crossroads (don't rightly know if I could pull him out of a line up), Christenson for being FASSY, and Ramirez for being one of the dudes chosen for The Last Patrol and me going "who's this guy?!" Your favorites are obscure indeed. :P

I also left out Grant and Tab and Perconte (kinda) and Cobb, just off the top of my mind. I like Grant and Tab too! There's just too many of them! *hands*

(I REALLY need that AU to exist, btw. Easy and MCR both take part in D-Day! MCR minus Mikey fight their way through Normandy and meet up... at some point! IT WOULD BE SPECTACULAR.)

Then again: PRETTY. So, you know. You should still probably watch it. :D

Basically, yeah, there's lots of flailing. Whenever they play it on the History channel, I lose the ENTIRE DAY.

(also, because I am creepy, I was reading your comment to Pique and I totally wrote in a sneaky little reference to Nix in my post-GOY fic. Because that's how I roll. I think they'd have gotten along.)

Ooh, I love The Breaking Point so so much. It's so heartwrenchingly tragic, but all throughout you have Lip being a wonderful mama and taking care of his boys, and then there's Speirs swooping in to save the day and Lip falling in love with him and the gorgeous convent scene and oh! It also has some of the most intense moments - Buck's reaction to Toye and Bill, Malarkey's trauma, Malarkey's sweetness to Buck, Hoob's tragic accident... yeah, it's an epic one. ;___;

OOOH. I think I'll have to hunt down your GOY fic! Don't suppose you could rustle up a link? :D They would have TOTALLY got along. I love it!

You know, I'm a little surprised by how many people have mentioned Skinny! I barely noticed him even in my rewatch. I guess I'll have to go back and get some more caps of him to satisfy the crowd. ;) Any recommendations of good Skinny-face scenes?

Neal McDonough! James MacAvoy! <333333

So THIS is the show my flist has exploded about. I was like, naaaah, at first because I thought it was WWI but I'm more invested in WWII than WWI and also this post is very persuasive so I think I might start watching this show....

YES! This is Easy Company, baby! They were one of the most active companies in the whole war, spending so much time on the front lines from D-Day to Market Garden to the Battle of the Bulge and right on into capturing Hitler's Eagle's Nest. They're an absolutely incredible bunch, and even if this version is Hollywoodized somewhat, it's still such an amazing tribute to the men who fought to make the world what it is today. You should definitely check it out!!

And first, can I say, daaaaamn those are some good caps. What program do you use to get them in such deliciously shiny hi-res? (Always comes out fuzzy when I do it.) EDIT: Ah, I see it's more about the file you downloaded than how you got the caps. Still, fine work, and I'll be keeping an eye out for the uploads.

And secondly, mmm, EASY. Yeah, so I've seen the show loads of times, I recognise 'em all, but it is always nice to look at their pretty faces in such marvellous detail. (I actually inadvertently typed 'marvellous hair' just then because I was still too busy thinking about how awesome Nixon looked in that one picture from Why We Fight.)

And you say there might be more? Count this as a definite vote in your favour.

Yeah I really have to give the quality credit to the files themselves. :) But what I use to cap is just the built-in screencapture function on Macs - it's fast and responsive and gets the whole screen, and just requires a keyboard shortcut.

EEEEASY. Nix's hair DOES look marvelous in that shot from Why We Fight. It's all artfully mussed and has such a graceful shape to it. I adooore him, ugh. ♥

After the response this has gotten, there will definitely be more, don't you worry. :D

Oh man, you should've seen us last night. LOST was playing on the TV, but all three of us were looking at this picspam, so were randomly going "DOC ROE!! OMG POPEYE! ♥ ♥ SPEEEIRS. :DDD", etc. This show just lends to so much fangirling!

I fail and don't have any icons yet, boo.

Heehee, I can totally imagine the fangirling! <33 I just wish I could be there to share it with you, SIGH. I do want to thank you all for bringing this joy into my life though. :D

ICONS ARE LIFE. I'm probably going to make some so keep an eye out for that ;)

BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for those giant hi-res caps! And I love your captions! And I support your efforts to convert people to BoB! Go you!

I feel your pain about leaving people out. I did a bunch of recaps and it was just impossible to choose which caps to include! By the time I got to Points, the entry was so big I had to split it into two! :-)
