Part A

I think that it's evident from the wide range of images I've selected here that Band of Brothers is an incredibly diverse visual experience, but it's always beautiful. The settings range from stark and cold to warm and vibrant, and the colors and filming style so well-reflect the atmosphere and mood of the corresponding place and events. The camera also really loves to find objects and fill the screen with them, make them larger than life - I particularly love how the typewriter is shot, and images like Doc Roe's bleeding finger in Bastogne. I love the contrast of images like Renee at the aid station - as a whole, the image is bleached and desolate, but the vividness of her blue scarf, the blood on her sleeves, the red aid station banner - it's just so striking. They also managed to find some truly breathtaking times of day to film - I think the pink, vaguely haunting sky over the battle in Holland is so exquisite, just to pull out one example. I know a lot of the series is beautiful because it's portraying beautiful men, but I hope I've reminded you what a masterpiece of film the entire series is, because I really think that's worth appreciating! ♥

Date: 2010-02-08 05:54 pm (UTC)For such a vile storyline the whole of Bastogne always looks stunning. And I've no idea why but this tiny scene has always really got to me so I'm glad you've put it in here.
SHIFTYYYYY <3
I adore how Austria is captured in the final episode. It's like the heaven of their metaphorical hell, really lush and rich in colour. Perfect. And I love the expression of Goerring's missus after Nix crushes the frame.
Oh oh oh. I love this! It's made me remember so many lovely little scenes. Thank you, bb! <3333333
(Also, I never have found out; who is in the motorbike with Malarky in the third (I think... maybe first or second) episode?)

Date: 2010-02-08 06:06 pm (UTC)And yes, I love the Old Chap, and the scene he's in. (There's something slightly Pink Panther about how he wobbles around the T-junction being encircled by Stealthy Paratroopers.)

Date: 2010-02-08 06:17 pm (UTC)VERY Peter Sellers indeed! :D I do love a bit of stereotypical Britain in my shows.

Date: 2010-02-08 10:49 pm (UTC)There's something about that scene in Haguenau that is shot even MORE beautifully than normal - the sharp focus on the poor dead soldier while his comrades look on, blurred and sad. Sniff.
Aw Shiftyface! <333333
Whoa, was that woman really Mrs Goerring? I thought that the Goerring house was where Dick took Nix to find that cellar of booze? The house that Nix is in then is just a random house in Landsberg, which he's searching to get him some booze. Regardless of who she is, she's got an amazing face, and the red she's in is so striking.
You're welcome, my love!! BoB is full of tiny moments and HUGE moments, it's easy to miss things. :)

Date: 2010-02-08 05:44 pm (UTC)I'd ask for the full-size versions but it's so hard to choose! Could you maybe put them in a zip file and upload it to Sendspace or Megaupload or something?
Though if that's too much, I'd at least love a link to the full-size version of that picture with Winters, Nixon and Welsh on the steps, with the mountains behind them, because I'd love to put that as the wallpaper on my laptop.

Date: 2010-02-08 05:47 pm (UTC)I will definitely zip them up later, but I'm at work and busy now so that will have to wait. In the meantime, have the full-size of the steps photo! :)

The "bench of the fallen". *cries* Gets me every single time.

Date: 2010-02-16 10:52 pm (UTC)I'm curious - do you mean just episode 6 (Bastogne) or episode 7 (The Breaking Point) as well? I find 7 to be much more difficult, because it's simply a litany of losses - Hoobler, Smokey, Welsh, Guarnere, Toye, Muck, Penkala. :( I guess that's what hits me hardest. Six is awfully tough as well though, with its sense of pervasive misery and hopelessness, and of course Renee. :( I guess I often think of them as one episode together, just all around difficult, until of course you get to Speirs being a BAMF and also having a crush on Lip. Doesn't fix anything, but sure is nice. And in any case, I would definitely recommend you give 6 another try, because even as hard as it is, there's so much to appreciate, so many small moments that prove the spirit and heart of these men. ♥

Date: 2010-02-16 10:58 pm (UTC)Sorry, I realised you were talking about episode 7, so I had to quickly stop reading the rest of your comment - I'm trying to stay spoilerfree (I reckoned I could skim your images now, and look at them properly later, when I've seen the entire series).

Date: 2010-02-16 11:07 pm (UTC)There are some mild spoilers in the end of this spam, but I don't think most of them make any sense without context. There are definitely spoilers in my Roe and Lieb spams though so steer clear!
I'm very sorry again. I will restate my encouragement then - Episode 6 is somewhat difficult, but it's more a pervasive misery and hopelessness than specific horrible events. Following Roe around is actually a really nice perspective on the Bois Jacques saga, because you see that even though he was low on supplies, he had his heart fully set on protecting all of his men and taking the best care of them he could. He forges a lovely human connection that's a real pleasure to watch, and is generally a loveable sweetheart that you want to give an enormous hug. The Breaking Point is a little more action-filled, and therefore tragic, but... still beautiful. They're very difficult episodes of television for sure, but also very worth getting through. And after everything, you have POINTS!!!, which is EASY FROLICKING IN THE SUN! (Well. Mostly.) Ahem. The point is, soldier on my dear, it's worth it. :)
(And consider me still headdesking for spoiling you. :()

Date: 2010-02-16 11:55 pm (UTC)And yay for giving me an easy episode to look forward to! I'm going to try to find a watching buddy sometime over the next week or two, for 6 and 7, and then I should be safe on my own. Yes, I'm a wimp, I know! But I so want to battle my way through it, because the first half was so fantastic (though I struggled rather in one of the earlier episodes, 3 I think), and I want to see the rest of their story.

Date: 2010-03-04 03:01 am (UTC)Although, I have a question. Would these happen to be Blu-Ray caps? And, if yes, would you be able to tell me how you capped them? :D Thanks!

Date: 2010-03-04 03:51 am (UTC)These are actually caps from avi rips of the HD DVDs, so I just used my Macbook's built in capping capability. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!
