exsequar: (Girlyrock - Gabe hotass)
I have commenced my second week of lectures (I know, what the hell? You've all been in school for aaaaages) and I'm feeling a bit better about some of them, a bit wary of others. Even though I'm taking just about the same number of hours of courses as I did back home, it feels like a lot more because 8 subjects is so much more overwhelming than 4, especially when 7 of them are chemistry/biochemistry, as opposed to ONE. I'm just not sure how much reading and focus I'm supposed to do or give to each subject. Gah!

Just to show you how insane the life of a chemistry student is, here's my schedule! (Each lecture starts on the hour and lasts ~50 minutes)

Monday:
9 - Quantum Chemistry
11 - Organometallics
4 - Thermodynamics

Tuesday:
10 - Quantum Chemistry
11 - Group Theory
2 - Proteins & Enzymes
3 - Medicinal Chemistry
4 - Proteins & Enzymes
(5-7 - Karate)

Wednesday:
10 - Electrochemistry
11 - European Societies
1 - European Societies
2 - Medicinal Chemistry
(7-9 - Choir)

Thursday:
9-12 and 2-5 - Physical chemistry lab
(5-7 - Karate)

Friday:
10-1 - Computational physical chemistry lab

FUN! \o/ It wasn't SO terrible until I picked up quantum chemistry (two days that started at 11! Score!) but now it's just kind of like I'm going to be dead of exhaustion really soon, heh. We'll see.

Of course, it doesn't help that I have yet to be HEALTHY. I arrived in Ireland with a cough which has STILL not gone away, and now today on top of that I've felt lightheaded, flushed, achey, and tired. I hope it's a 24 hour thing, and not a lingering flu that will lay me out for a week. BLEH. I had to tell Simon not to come up today, because I am just not up for more than drinking tea on the couch, and I think he was angry/disappointed, as his texts were very terse. :(

Also, tonight Kevin Smith is coming to talk to my college, but I really do not feel like making the fifteen minute hike, and then sitting in an uncomfortable chair for however many hours. Like I said. Tea. Couch. Sigh.

Oh I forgot to tell you guys! Guess who might be coming to talk to my school? Oh yeah, that's right, CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY. *falls over laughing* I just... WHAT? What the HELL has Chad Michael Mayhem done to be invited to talk at the oldest university in Ireland??? Ahahaha. There's a chance he might not come, but if he does I might have to go just for the comedic value. Now WHY couldn't it have been Jared or Jensen??? Gosh.

Amusing bandom thing - [livejournal.com profile] redbrickrose was talking about Gabe in an entry, and how you kind of can't take him seriously because then you'll be super skeeved out, so you love him A LOT A LOT but it's very ironic, because let's face it, he's a crazy dude. So then she proposed an Ironic Love spectrum, with Gabe as the most ironic and Gerard as the least. I'm not sure Gerard would be the least for me, but I think it's a hilarious idea, and I want to kind of think about this! If you can give me a pithy and accurate definition of irony, you get a cookie. It's the strangest abstract concept ever. )

Okay, that was all kind of pointless but I spent a long time on it so I'm going to post it anyway! SO THERE :P Tell me where everyone is on your irony scale!

To Do list tonight: Have dinner. Read more d-block chemistry. Post at least some of bandom happyplace spam. Watch Dirty Sexy Money and House.

OH BY THE WAY SGA IS THE MOST AMAZING LOVE EVER. GAH HEARTS FOREVERRRRR.

(Pee. Ess. "I ain't suckin you off for any amount of money." OH GERARD. (From the the end of the live Give Em Hell, Kid off LOTMS))

This post is way too long. Over and out.

Had five lectures today, followed by karate - a tiring day! Tiring, but good!

First was Group Theory. I was terrified of this class because I thought it presumed prior knowledge of Group Theory, but it doesn't, and I really like the professor, so thumbs up on this one!

Second - Overview of Functional Groups. I was extremely skeptical going in, as the syllabus looked like, in its entirety, like it covered what I did in my first month of organic last year. And oh boy, I was right. She did Lewis structures guys. Lewis structures! And electronegativity! All in a kindergarten voice like we weren't all third year science students. What??? Definitely dropping that one, bleh.

Third - Proteins and Enzymes. I think I'm going to love this class. The lecturer is Canadian, so I actually understood him, and he's very clear and thorough. I've always been fascinated by protein structure and all that anyway. Nifty! (And THIS is why I want to be a biochemist instead of a straight chemist - proteins make me say "nifty"! *nerd*)

Fourth - Medicinal Chemistry. It was kind of a spur of the moment decision to go to this one with Judy, the other American chem student here with me, but I'm glad I did. It seems really fascinating! We didn't actually learn anything today, but we will tomorrow, and I'm quite excited. I love the teacher - she's from Spain, and very funny and sweet.

Fifth - Proteins again. It's from 2 to 3 and then 4 to 5... with the same professor. Very odd.

Sixth - KARATE! Hiyah! :D It was a lot of fun, though I bet I'll be sore tomorrow! I met a girl named Sinead who actually was in Proteins with me right before, and she was really sweet. There were altogether 5 girls there who were beginners like me, so I didn't feel like an idiot, yay! Then there were about 8 people in, you know, the white karate outfits, and about five of them were blackbelts! Crazy! I felt bad because they ended up essentially getting used as punching bags for the beginners. We had to ram them with our elbows, punch them in the chest, and kick them in the legs. Repeatedly. It was pretty hilarious, and for the most part they were great sports about it, haha. The man I had to elbow was awesome - his name was Stephen, and he was an older guy, probably mid forties, and he was just very sweet and helpful. He was very complimentary on my punches and blocks, and asked if I'd done it before, which I haven't! *proud* I really liked all of the people, and I'm definitely going to try keeping up with it. Going back on Thursday! Yay!

So all that's fine and dandy, but I'm still stressing out about courses. I don't have nearly a heavy enough load (ha, I know - they take a lot more classes here, since each class only meets once or twice a week, so you've got a lot more subjects going on at once, oh boy) to get enough credits, and it's really hard to take classes from other subjects, and I need to run around like a chicken with its head cut off tomorrow to try to figure shit out. The later it gets in the week, the more first lectures I will have missed :-/ *flail* I will figure it out! I will! *determined face*

Simon isn't coming up tomorrow, because his cousin died :( I don't know if they were close or anything, but that's terrible. On a very selfish note, I'm slightly put out because that means another week of awkward texting, meh. I just tried to ask him if we could talk some other way, like email, which is a bit more conducive to actually communicating, instead of trite little cliches. (Right after he told me why he couldnt come, he said "i really wish i could come see you cant stop thinking about you" and I was like *FACEPALM* Like you haven't said that 8 MILLION TIMES.) So now he said he'll call me and email me, which could be good or not so good. Here's hoping!
exsequar: (Girlyrock - Gabe/William HEARTS)
I love this song ridiculous amounts now that William said he thinks of Gabe when he sings it. Is that pathetic? Whatever. So many hearts, boys.

Speaking of, I desperately wanted a copy of that interview (Gabe and William on the red carpet at the VMAs) to keep but no one had uploaded it! Then I found it was on Youtube, and Bec pointed me to a site that rips Youtube videos, and I HAS IT. YAYE. So I have uploaded it for all you lovely folks. Feel free to reupload, link on your journals, whatever. Spread the love! (It's not the greatest quality though, sorry :()

One half of us is dope, the other half is BROKE. (.mp4, 4.5 MB)

Ireland update! (It feels weird to be keeping a mostly non-fannish journal, but you're all reading and commenting, actually MORE than when it's fannish, and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside ♥) So today was orientation, which was mildly interesting. We had a presentation about cultural adjustment, and I learned that the Irish are a quirky bunch. For example, when they say "no" they often don't mean it - you're supposed to engage in about 3 or 4 back and forths of "are you sure?" "no no that's quite alright" "really? because it would be fun!" "no no, really" ETC ETC. before the person saying no (but not actually meaning it!) caves and agrees. And if you take a no literally, they'll think you're weird. I DON'T KNOW. Odd lot, these Irish. There were a bunch of funny little cultural things like that. I hope I don't accidentally embarrass myself or insult someone!

One thing that was hilarious that we were warned that Irish boys are "more sexually aggressive" - I just sat there laughing to myself.

Speaking of Simon! I just texted with him a bit, and he said he'd love to take me on a date when he comes up, and spoil me rotten, and eee. So excited, guys.

At the lunch during orientation, me, Kate and Katelyn met a random girl who sat with us (good for her, I say!) whose name is Carolyn, and she's from Wisconsin. She was really sweet and Katelyn and I ended up hanging out with her more later. That was a really nice part of the day :)

The other exciting part of today was that I BOUGHT LIFE ON THE MURDER SCENE! :D:D:D Katelyn and I wandered into a record store that was having a sale, and I was just poking through the FOB, Panic!, MCR sections (as you do...) and I picked up this thing that I thought was Three Cheers, but it was kind of big, then I looked at the title and was like EEEEEE. It was 25 Euro, which isn't horrible (about $36) and I flailed at Katelyn and immediately bought it. It's so pretttty! YAY.

I have the apartment to myself right now, which is really, really nice. Kate, Megan, and Zach went to see a speaker at Trinity, the guitarist of the Smiths (I know, I know, I really should have gone, but you have to be a member of a society and the table for the society closed down and I was really really tired anyway), while Katelyn went out to dinner with some of the other Butler girls, so I'm just chillin here listening to TAI and texting with Simon and it's really relaxing. I love and need my alone time.

Teevee! I have watched the premieres of Heroes and SGA. Enjoyed both, especially SGA. Am most intrigued by the leaked SGA episode, it sounds fantaaastic, and I can't wait for it to air. I have downloaded Heroes 2x02 and will most likely watch it tonight. Yay teevee!
