Um, HELLO NEW BOYFRIENDS.

Someone made a post on [livejournal.com profile] theused about this band that's opening for The Used on their tour, so I checked them out and HI I'M IN LOVE. They're called Drive A and they're young punk rockers from LA and their music is aaaawesome. I already bought their debut on iTunes (it's $6.99! Go! Buy!) and I'm only halfway through but I can tell I'm going to have this album on repeat a LOT! It's the best kind of fast, crunchy guitar rock with reasonably melodic vocal lines. And the guys are super cute, which never ever hurts! I'm REALLY excited to see them open for The Used in Detroit now. :DDDDD You should all check them out too! Yay baby rockers!!

Theory: the lyric "you come around because I love your face" is a not-so-subtle response to all the fangirls (myself included) whose most frequent response to Brendon Urie is "omg Bden, your FACE"? It's just a fangirly exclamation that seems to be most often applied to Mr. Urie himself, and the lyric itself is super bizarre otherwise (not that the song makes much sense in general :P).

It's a super fucking catchy line though. I am very excited to hear this album! My favorite thing is the abundance of cheerful, melodic electric guitar. An easy way to my heart! (Do we know who's playing bass on this recording? Was it before they went their separate ways? I mean... we all know that Brendon could be a band ALL ON HIS OWN, even without Spencer, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was doing it all except the drums, but I am curious.)

I think I need a new Panic! icon, i.e. one of Brendon and Spencer.

My two cents on the Other Half: I think the Young Veins is a strange and vaguely disturbing name (veins are kind of squicky okay, despite my spending a whole summer taking them straight out of rats and studying them). I like the song fine, but it still sounds really retro in a pretty derivative way, and that was what displeased me about Pretty Odd. I do think that Ryan's getting better at singing, but I just... he'll never be a Brendon. So... it's a good song, but not my favorite. We'll see. (I do think, however, that these two songs highlight in neon orange with a few spotlights and wailing sirens the totally real musical rift between the two halves of Panic. I just can't imagine the people who made those two songs sitting in the studio and trying to make music together. So... it makes sense. I just hope they're on good terms.)

I AM excited about the new Cobra album. Two weeks eeeee!

The new The Used video for Blood on my Hands is disturbing in all the best ways. The cinematography is unsettling and fantastic, and Bert is just as insane as usual! I just wish the camera made a little more love to his bandmates, but what can you do. I also like the twist that he's a serial killer who kills serial killers! HELLO DEXTER. Hahaha. Made of awesome. I'm still faintly disappointed about the album as a whole, but I do like it, and a couple songs have really grown on me (particularly Empty With You).

Bandom is AWESOME right now, you guys. MCR SHOWS IN LA THIS WEEK WHICH MEANS PHOTOS AND VIDEOS AND REPORTS AND DEFINITELY NEW MUSIC AND EEEEEEEEEE. They're still my most MOST favorites. :> (Oh, and there's THIS. Gerard Way, you HYPNOTIZE ME.)

Today in the Life of Anne: my professor/PI called me SMART. *beams*

Completely unrelated piece of news that might be of interest to some: Jaida Jones and Dani Bennett's new book is out! It's called Shadow Magic and you can get it from Amazon. However, I looked up some reviews and... the book is about different characters! :( It's a sequel to Havemercy but entirely different people are the focus. I'm rather disappointed, I must admit - Hal! Royston! Thom! Rook! I loved them so much and needed more. But I trust them a whole lot as authors, so I'm obviously still going to pick it up. I'm just kind of surprised.

This is like, MY YEAR for new music, and I am so impatient for more of it to HAPPEN already.

ALREADY OUT:
-Green Day (amazing!)
-Mandy Moore (I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH)

COMING VERY SOON (BUT NOT SOON ENOUGH):
-Lostprophets
-Michelle Branch
-Cobra Starship (Aug 11th)
-Morningwood
-Paramore (Sept 29)
-THE USED!!!! (Sept 1st)

IN THE STUDIO:
-Panic(!) at the Disco
-MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE!!!!!

Lostprophets/The Used/MCR basically comprise my current three MOST FAVORITE bands. To have new music by all of them will be, like, one massive orgasm holy shit. O___O I looove the new Used single (and it's excellent live! \o/) and I also love the two singles Morningwood has put out so far. One band I'm curious about is We The Kings - are they ever gonna do a follow up?? Needs moar! It's rather doubtful that it will be as awesome, but I want to hear it anyway!

Tomorrow is going to be funtiems! I'm going to Cedar Point, a big amusement park in Ohio, with eleven other Chem Bio kids. Yay for new people and road trips and sunshine and rollercoasters! *twirls* I'm getting picked up at 8 AM, which blows a little and I need to go to bed, but otherwise WHEE.

Have a good Saturday my dears! ♥

I thought this would be an interesting challenge, and it was! I'm also up way too late again. Dammit.

List 10 platonic relationships on TV/Movies that you enjoy.

Rules:

1. They interact in canon, preferably in a significant (apply your own interpretation of such) way.
2. They are not related. They can, however, view each other as surrogate family.
3. Neither has confessed or implied romantic love for the other in canon.
4. They have not dated, been married, had sex, or made out in canon, on purpose, and of their own free will.
5. A popular fanon ship is ok (though preferably not your ship) but a canon pairing you wish were just friends is out.
6. Try to avoid using the same character or series twice.

1. Buffy, Willow, and Xander. (With bonus Giles). Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Their collective friendship is one of the most beautiful and enduring things in all of television. The original trio of Chosen One, Geek, and Dork! (I'm looking at you, Harry Potter!) Each side of this triangle has its own unique strength, but the three of them together is just unstoppable. With Giles, well, they can even save the world. :)

More! Don't worry, no spoilers for anything. )

I'm totally drawing a blank on a 10th, and it's 4 AM, so screw the rules. :P That was really interesting though, because it's quite unusual to look at fannish material with a purely platonic eye. I realized that, 1) many many of the non-romantic relationships I'm invested in are familial, though I often want them to be romantic, cough cough, and 2) in depth portrayals of female frienships are pretty rare! I was trying to think of more girl-girl friendships but it's really, really hard. Bones and Angela are actually a kind of unique example. And I really love them all the more for it. The other exemplar of that category on this list is Buffy and Willow, of course. If I had to choose a number 10, I'd say Rory and her best friend from Gilmore Girls, but I'm totally blanking on her name. Anyway, that show is thumbs up on the female relationships all around, so kind of an anomaly. It's strange to have very few role models on the screen for a kind of relationship that is incredibly important to me (my life would be empty without my best girls). Welcome to being a girl, I suppose. >.<

Two things I think are AWESOME:
  • Cobra Starship's new video. Hot and funny and sassy, as usual! <33 Leighton Meester is positively gorgeous, and a pretty convincing lure towards Gossip Girl. Hurmmmmm. Anyway, she and Vicky-T as what they are (no spoilers!) is HOT AS HELL om nom nom.
  • NEW THE USED SINGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Download "Blood on my Hands" at the iTunes store! Because it is AWESOME! I already know it pretty well, and I got to hear it LIVE first, but the bits where Bert sings lower sound much better on the studio version, and I always liked the song. NEEEED THIS ALBUM OMG.

You know you're a college student when: you look at the clock, it says 1 AM, and you go "hey, it's still early!"

So - hey, it's still early! I've already written 2.5 pages of my paper, all my extensive research is TOTALLY paying off (quotes every sentence, haha! From different sources!), I think I've got a good sense of how I want to structure it overall, and my main concern is that I'm going to run out of space (my professor's instructions: "Your target is 1800 words. I'll stop reading when you reach 2000." And he means it.) because I am one wordy motherfucker, especially when I have fifteen hand-written pages of quotations and notes from one source and three single spaced pages of notes typed from the other. I think I could have written a 20 page paper on the origins of Hutu and Tutsi identities with this research.

Wow, that middle sentence was long. SEE I TOLD YOU SO. Here's a sample from my paper:
The most significant institutional change that brought about this new, and highly unequal, relationship was the imposition of ubureetwa, “a form of clientship that was almost entirely without an element of reciprocity,” consisted of “manual labor […] as payment for occupation of land” (Mamdani 66), and was imposed only on Hutu. At this point “the lines between Hutu and Tutsi remained porous” (Gourevitch 49) and there remained the possibility that a Hutu could “kwihutura – shed Hutuness – and achieve the political status of a Tutsi” (Mamdani 70).

Yes, I do realize I am slightly ridiculous. Whatever, these kinds of papers have totally gotten me As in the past. I'll just have to do more of my-own-words analyzing later, once I'm done with the historical narrative part.

Blah blah blah basically this post was for that first sentence. So, HEY, IT'S STILL EARLY! I'm gonna get a couple more hours of work in and then hit the hay. :) Tomorrow's crunch time - I have to finish this paper, study for a physics exam, and prepare my presentation, all due Thursday. But now that I've got so much done on my paper (three hours ago I ONLY had notes) I'm feeling good! \o/

(Now that I've broken my concert drought I WANT MOOOOORE. *mope mope* I've been listening to The Used all day, still on a bit of a high but also sad that it's OVER.)

I come bearing videos from The Used show last night! Like I said, the audio is SUPER DUPER AWESOME, and the video's great too, though better before Youtube smushed it. Make sure you watch in HQ!

Paralyzed, I Caught Fire, etc, plus a few pictures )

ETA: I've now uploaded ALL of my videos from the concert to my server space. PLEASE right click and save!

&THEUSED;

Ughhhh it was AMAZING. We waited about 20 minutes in the rain, but then the venue decided to be really nice and let everyone they could into the lobby area so we didn't get soaked. We waited about an hour more in there and then got in! We had already decided that the pit was NOT happening (way too many people there before us, and lots of them large guys...) so we went straight up to the balcony and got awesome spots right on the railing. SO CLOSE! Hiiiii BertQuinnJephaDan HIIII! (It was a perfect choice - the pit got really nasty even before the Used came on. So yay for being sensible!)

The first opener was a bunch of hot dudes with not very memorable music. (The singer looked like surfer/hard rock Jon Walker. He wasn't wearing shoes!!) The second opener was crappy and generic and boring. But there were only two which was awesome!

AND THEN IT WAS THE USED TIME YAY!!! The setlist was fucking awesome. They played (not in this order): Take It Away, The Bird and the Worm, I Caught Fire (In Your Eyes), All That I Got, Hospital, Paralyzed, Liar Liar (Burn In Hell), PRETTY HANDSOME AWKWARD YAAAAAAAAAAAY, Box Of Sharp Objects, and I feel like I must be forgetting some... ETA: According to my videos they also played Taste of Ink and Buried Myself Alive! I just really wish they had played Wake the Dead, which is my favorite (non B-side) The Used song. Oh well!

Anyways, it was a MOST satisfactory set (though it went by way too fast!!). Bert is a crazyperson and an awesome entertainer. At one point he was trying to get everyone to dance and showed off his hotgirl dancing moves. Hell yes. Another time he was getting the crowd to yell things after him, like FUCK YOU BERT! and YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE! Then he did YOU'RE A FAGGOT! And when most of the crowd shouted it back he made a shocked face and and wagged his finger at us. *facepalm* Oh Bert. He then proceeded to ask us if he's pretty enough to be gay. Ha.

I am most enamored of Quinn, who is blonde and hot and can powerlunge like no one else. Jepha has these amazing dance moves that I can't even possibly describe - perhaps I'll upload a video. And Dan's just back there bashing away for all he's worth.

BASICALLY they're amazing and I love their music and I love the show they put on. My only complaint is that it was too short. :( That's probably just my perception - I think the show was about an hour. But I want moooooar! Hee. Regardless, it was SUPER AWESOME and entirely worth giving up a whole day of getting work done. Seeing [livejournal.com profile] wasoncedelight and [livejournal.com profile] tuesdaysgone was so so awesome too!! They are both lovely ladies and I'm really glad I got to meet them before I move away from PA. <333333

*flops* And now I'm going to try to get some work done! (Hahaha.)

ETA: OMG! I'm downloading my videos and they're AMAZING!!!! This was my first time with this camera at a concert and the sound is unbelievable. Everything is clear and there's no distortion, even on the really loud songs! FUCK YEAH!!!! I was only able to get parts of each song because my memory card isn't huge, but I got an amaaaazing full video of Paralyzed so I'll probably be uploading that! YAY! Oh it's so great to have a good concert camera!!! \o/

Today has been far less productive than I would have wanted it to be. Dammit. I'd hoped to finish the draft of my independent research final paper as well as getting through all the sources and extracting quotes for my Rwanda paper. I sort of partially accomplished both of those goals - I've got the research paper cobbled together, but it needs some technical adjustments and a big read-through to make sure it's logical because it's now 30 pages of stuff cobbled together over the course of three years. And I read *more* of my sources for the Rwanda paper, but didn't finish. GOOD JOB SELF.

Whatever, it'll get done. I'm so mellow about it, because comparing this to last semester? AHAHAHA. I had two twenty page papers, two huge presentations, a lab report, two huge final exams, and one short paper to do in my last week. So this is like LA LA LA WHATEVER!

And in line with that spirit, I AM GOING TO SEE THE USED TOMORROW OMGYAY!!!!!!! I am going to have a [livejournal.com profile] wasoncedelight (FINALLY!!) and a [livejournal.com profile] tuesdaysgone and we're going to go out for crepes at Rachel's and then we're going to be first in line and we're gonna get barrier and get showered in Bert's sweat for a while. YESSS. To be honest I'm a little nervous, like squirmy tummy nervous, because I have never been in a pit before and we're aiming for barrier and this venue doesn't HAVE a barrier, you're essentially squashed against the stage for however many hours, sooo. I question my ability to survive intact? BUT WE SHALL SEE. Maybe Bert will save me if I am being crushed? :D? (Ahahaha that's funny.) But I will have a Mel and a Lars and hopefully they will deal with my spazzy innocence and get me through in one piece. And OMG THE USED! I am so so so pumped. *beams*

Okay I am going to go back to working on this paper of mine! Catch you on the flipside!

Calling all potential fellow-The Used-goers! So I know that [livejournal.com profile] discord_harmony, [livejournal.com profile] wasoncedelight, and [livejournal.com profile] tuesdaysgone have all expressed interest in possibly going to this show. Have any of you decided for sure yet? I think I should go get tickets soon (I'm paranoid about them selling out) so let me know if you want one!

(Pleeeease someone come with me? *puppy eyes*)

((I realize it is ironic to use MCR icons for my The Used posts. I don't have any Used icons though! *hands*))

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

THE USED IS PLAYING IN MY CITY IN MAY IN THE TINIEST VENUE EVER!!!!!!!!!

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

*LITERAL KICKYFEET OF JOY* IF IT WASN'T TWO AM I'D BE RUNNING AROUND YELLING MY HEAD OFF OMGGGG.

*deep breaths* You guys. YOU GUYS. Seriously, if I could ask for ANY CONCERT AT ALL, it would be My Chemical Romance at the Chameleon. My second choice would be The Used at the Chameleon. GUESS WHAT I'M GETTING!!!!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

I think I may actually have to brave barrier for this omg. And it's PERFECT because it's during my READING DAYS which means I will be ESSENTIALLY DONE WITH COLLEGE WTF so I can completely go like EIGHT HOURS IN ADVANCE and have Bert sweating and screaming RIGHT IN MY FACE EEEEEEEEEEE.

Will someone come with me??!?? [livejournal.com profile] wasoncedelight??? (May 4th here in Lancaster! THE DEETS. $17, doors at 6)

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
