So, wacky story: eating lunch at work yesterday, I glanced at my keys and noticed to my GREAT surprise that my car key had been bent dramatically! Like, the strong steel rod had been bent at least 30 degrees. ????!? I still have exactly zero idea how that happened. It is a mystery for the ages.

Needless to say, I couldn't drive my car, so I sent an email to the whole building (high school) asking a kind soul for a ride (I live half an hour away) that evening and the next morning so I could get my spare key. An older woman showed up at my classroom and said she could give me a ride as she lives out past me. I had never met her before (my building is HUGE) but I was so grateful and took her up on it. This lovely guardian angel was named Patty.

We were talking about teaching in the car, mostly, until I happened to glance in the back seat and see that Patty had a MARAUDER'S MAP IPAD CASE!!!! And a HOBBIT TOTE BAG!!!! I freaked out a little bit and we immediately launched into nerd code - you know, the conversation you can only have with a fellow Confirmed Nerd. :D We shared our biggest fandoms - she's old school, into Star Trek and Wars, LOTR, HP, etc. We bonded over both being the girl in middle school who read LOTR once a year (at least). We even have the shared experience of getting really deep into Wheel of Time but never actually finishing. It was magical! And she's just an absolutely lovely woman all around.

As the cherry on top, she also plays SOCCER every week in an indoor league! WHAT! At that point I was freaking out a little, because I'm PRETTY SURE she's me in 20 years. I even want to move to the same area she lives in, and she's been teaching at this same school for 19 years. Could that be my future?! I don't know, but she seems to be doing pretty fabulously, and I wouldn't hate it!

In any case, I LOVE everything about this - random nerd encounters, but especially making a new delightful friend at work. Yay!!

(Happy Epilogue: The welding shop at my school was able to fix my key for free! It's got a slight crack in the metal so now it's just my spare key, but I am SO grateful. I love my colleagues!!!!)

No I don't know why I started with an Eminem lyric. Whatever.

HELLO I'M BACK. (also I already wrote this post and accidentally closed the tab so we're off to a FANTASTIC start....) As per my Wincon promise to many people, I'm going to try my damndest to come back to LJ. I had such a MARVELOUS time being surrounded by fangirls, and I used to have that daily with LJ. My life is noticeable lower quality with that missing. I'm a teacher now and I work so fucking hard, so to have a community to come to while I'm working endless hours at home would be... just beyond wonderful.

I am currently frantically lesson planning after spending the whole weekend HAVING FUN, so I can't say much more right now. A Wincon report of sorts will be coming I hope. For now have this gorgeous photo of our fangirl lunch earlier today (and can I just say that inserting a picture is now an awesome experience - I'm excited to explore all of LJ's fancy new functions!). And if you met me at Wincon, LET'S BE FRIENDS!!!

SPN fandom is at it again, but this time in a truly horrifying way that is hard to even comprehend.

Someone has written a J2 AU Bigbang set in post-earthquake Haiti. She uses the setting of a massive (RECENT) disaster that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Haitians as a prop and a background for a love story between two white men.

....

Better people than I have said many things about this, and they are all worth reading. There is nothing that ISN'T wrong about this, including the author's reactions to criticisms falling back on the old "I didn't MEAN to" trope. We know this fandom often fails, but this is a particularly pungent brand of privilege and racism that turns my stomach.

Please read about it and say something, as the OP at that link says.

So I have left my beautiful [livejournal.com profile] the5thmarauder, sadly. We had a brilliant time, I'm so so so glad we finally got to hang out, after knowing each other for many years! Hopefully she'll be able to make it over to Dublin before I depart for the States. I saw the lovely Cardiff and got Rach into Mikeyway and Timmy Riggins, and she introduced me to Noel and Russell, and basically there was much joy and love. \o/ Rach is made of ridiculous amounts of awesome, and I only bemoan that we cannot fangirl together ALL THE TIME. Love you, bb ♥

My sad parting from her was made less sad by the fact that I now have a ROBIN AND A MEL AND A JULES. You guys, fangirls are the best. We got to Robin's house and started watching this year's Big Fat Quiz, squeeing and laughing and awwwing over Noel and Russell because they are darling. We had also picked up alcohol on the way home and I ended up getting, um, really drunk on Magners, vodka and lemonade, and peach Archers Aqua schnapps. Oh my god. It smelled like PEACHIE-O's, and tasted only a little less fantastic, and was pretty much delicious. Robin and I finished off the entire bottle rather too fast. I can't remember the last time I was that drunk, it was pretty fabulous. Robin and I passed out in the middle of Atlantis, much to Mel's disappointment, and we stumbled up to bed shortly after, getting to sleep around 12:30, it was kind of insane. So much fun, and a most auspicious beginning to our days together. Then, this morning, we picked up a [livejournal.com profile] schneestern at Heathrow, and our fangirl harem is complete! :D Much good times are going to ensue, I can tell.

In fandom news... NEW PANIC! SONG. It's adorable, IMO. Cheesy and ridiculous but ADORABLE. I heart their stupid little faces. And wow, Abbey Road Studios? That's amazing, I'm so proud of them. I can't wait for this damn album!

Cobra's new video is so clever and brilliant and hilarious, just like them. Oh, Cobras <333

But my favorite bit of fandom news is OMG NEW TORCHWOOD TRAILER!!!!! A whole minute long and and and Spoilers, but TRUST ME YOU WANT TO KNOW. ) Is it Jan 16th yet?????? Eeeeee.

Also, new Atlantis on Friday! YAYE.

I love fandom and fangirls, you guys. I'm so full of squishy glee right now. LOVE YOU ALL! <33333

PSA to all Big Bang authors: I'm SO SORRY.

I haven't read any Big Bang fics yet, so if you were thinking that it was cause I hate you (if you thought about it all - which I doubt, but this is just an In Case) it's not at all. The problem is Me, not You. (It's true!!) I have been feeling disconnected and lacking in squee for both the Winchesters and the J's lately. I know that there are some truly truly awesome BB stories out there, but I don't feel like I'm in a headspace to properly appreciate them right now. I will get around to them at some point but.... right now, it just wouldn't work. I am really sorry, because I know you worked so hard on these, and I'm so awed and amazed by all of you, but there it is. I still love you!

In other news, I'm having a lazy Saturday. It's lovely.

Guess what I did last night? I beat the mayor of Lancaster, PA at poker! It was incredibly surreal. Oxfam held a Charity Game Night Gala to raise money, and we asked the mayor to come! His secretary said "he would try," so I was like, pffft... yeah right. And then he was THERE. I wish there had been a better turn out to the event to be a bit more impressive, but he was very gracious and nice and thanked us for caring about people. And gave a donation. And the event itself raised $800!! All that goes to a local organization that helps the homeless in Lancaster. So all in all it was quite a success, and we're very pleased. Yay Oxfam!

I bought the season 2 Stargate Atlantis official companion because I am totally a whore for this show :D It's a fun read, with comments from all the cast and producers and whatnots about each episode and character and suchforth. The most disappointing thing I came across, however, was this: Joe Flanigan was originally planning on writing what he calls a "McKay and Sheppard story," but because the idea was too similar to two SG-1 episodes, they went an entirely different direction and what we got was... Epiphany. You know, the one with the meditating space-bimbo and John in a beard chewing on hay and, oh yeah, MALP-on-a-stick! Booo. I do however find it fun that this episode led indirectly to my most favoritest McShep moment of the whole season - because John had the experience with the meditating crazy Ascended wannabes, Elizabeth assigned him to help Rodney meditate, which led to the scene in John's quarters at the end of Tao of Rodney, which, yaknow, ♥♥&hearts. So there is a silver lining! *laughs*

On a general note, I feel really disconnected from fandom right now. My extent of livejournal interaction is scrolling through my flist to get the gist, because I don't have time for any more. I have approximately 40 tabs of Supernatural fic open, and have neither the time nor the inclination to read any of them. I do read at least a SGA fic or two every day. I feel obscurely guilty about that :-/ This damned SPN hiatus needs to be over, now! But I really do miss you guys and miss being really involved... I just can't fix it right now. I'm sorry and I love you all, I really do. And to all my friends going through tough times - my heart is with you, and I wish you the very very best. *hugs everyone*
exsequar: (SN Bros love the whole of you)
HOW ARE YOU ALL SO FUCKING AMAZING???

I generally find love memes too LARGE to navigate, but some very kind soul put together an index for the current one, and so I went to look...

I AM IN TEARS. Full on, sobbing, wracking tears. I just. WHAT. You guys! You have COMPLETELY overwhelmed me. You don't understand. I have made big strides recently, but I have ALWAYS been insecure and unsure and there's always tons of self-doubt and loathing and sometimes I get to very dark places. But finding you has changed that, so completely. And you go and DROWN ME with your amazingness and I can't do anything but flap my hands and cry and try to articulate how much you MEAN to me. You make me proud to be who I AM, truly and really, and not just some toned down politically correct version of myself. I think my favorite descriptor used is "unabashedly loves the gay"! *laughs* Because it's very true, and you all GET that, and so much more. So, so much more. I... I can't find words to thank you, but thank you. From the very bottom of my heart. I love you all.

Head on over to The Love Meme

ETA: Crap, you all are so amazing that the comment limit was reached! *flails* So I can't go contribute my love! I'M SORRY! I hope you all know how much I love you. I do I do I do.

I studied orgo for the large majority of the day, and got a significant amount accomplished - yay me. But it didn't get me down or frustrated or upset, and you know why? Because of fannish distractions! Seriously, I will never be truly depressed so long as I have all you darling people AND all the darling characters/people we flail about to keep a smile on my face.

I rewarded my efforts 1) By reading some Wincest (oh, boys), 2) watching SGA s1 episode The Defiant One (in which Rodney saves John's life, John is generally hotass, and Rodney is sweet and heroic and lovely. fabulous episode.), and 3) reading the most hilarious and adorable piece of McShep ever. There was pot involved. I giggled a lot, possibly more than THEY did.

And with that lovely bedtime story, I go to sleep. *hugs everyone*

TWENTY FOUR HOURS OMG

*jumps up and down and tries to breathe*

Okay, I propose a fun activity to distract ourselves - comment tag with Supernatural quotes! Just reply to this post or another comment with a quote by Sam or Dean or John or Sarah or Ash or any other of our beloved characters! I think it would be most fun if we kept it to one quote per comment, but comment as many times as you want (reply to lots of different people! spread the love!)! And feel free to pimp this, let's get lots of people involved!

Here, I'll start:

He's the only one that gets to call me that.
exsequar: (Misc I blame fandom!)
So [livejournal.com profile] wendy came up with the lovely idea of doing an animated icon with all the terms that are uniquely Supernatural's. We've been brainstorming - Metallicar, Padackles, Wincest, Dude, Kripke, etc... - but we feel there are many we're missing! So I want you all to tell me words or short phrases that you think are special to the SPN fandom. Aaaaand - go!

[Poll #900700]

Feel free to move into the comments if necessary!
