So on lazy mornings, you study physics.

Minor disaster at work today - know that pretty pretty product I was talking about? Well I had about a third of it in a round bottom flask... and I dropped it on the bench. It shattered, pretty pretty product went all over dirty dirty bench :( Luckily a large portion of it actually landed on the label wrapped around the cable for the hotplate sitting there, so that part of it was easily collected back. I lost about 60 mg out of 100. It wasn't a huge tragedy, especially since I still have a large portion of the product in another vessel, but it gave me that nauseous feeling of being a complete fuck up and hating it. Anyone know the sensation? Heh. My stomach didn't settle down all afternoon, though I now realize that's also partially because I just started my period, LOVELY.

Thought for the day: There's something wrong with a country where people getting gunned down and knifed and what have you is status quo in the media, both fictional and non, but an accidental boob shot is cause for a national uproar and anything sexual beyond kissing calls for covering the kids' eyes. Objectively, violence is terrible and wrong and should never happen, while sex is beautiful and natural and necessary, but we seem to have turned that on its head. Sigh.

Just bought my ticket to Order of the Phoenix on Friday in IMAX! So excited!!! I watched my first full scene from the movie on Youtube last night, and it's Harry's reunion with Hermione and Ron after the summer, and it's lifted directly from the book and it's one of my favorite scenes and I'm practically SPLITTING with joy!!! Eeeee! This movie better make my life, because I'm not particularly looking forward to Half Blood Prince!

I have no idea what I want to do for dinner. Hrm. Anyway!

I'm currently watching SGA 3x07 Common Ground, in which Rodney is desperately worried about his boyfriend, Kolya makes me want to do dirty things to him, the whole team is fabulous and hardcore, and there's a Wraith with an actual personality. I forgot how much I liked this one!

McSheppers on my flist! Go read this ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE ficlet written for me by [livejournal.com profile] 1ightning - she's seen about one episode of SGA and she already has the boys' voices down! It's hilarious and fantastic and sweet and LOVE. (There's also two Wincest ficlets there that are also super sweet, if you feel like checking those out too :))

*scratches head*

I am having a brainfarty moment. See this icon? I'm trying to remember when it's from! Sheppard's out in either an F302 or a Jumper and he's pulling some fancypants moves and nobody understands what the hell he's doing except RODNEY! \o/ It's adorable. I thought it was from Allies or the ep after that, but apparently I am mistaken! Halp? Anybody? All I know is that Rodney and Lorne and Caldwell are on the Daedalus. Hmmmm!

A pleasant side bonus of my looking for this scene is that I keep stumbling over priceless little moments. Like Rodney patting John on the arm in Allies and John doing his little "wtf" scrunchy face, or or this really cute exchange after John's saved Teyla's life:

John: Don't go feeling special, I woulda done it for any one of ya.
Teyla: Of course.
John (walking away): Except for maybe McKay.
Teyla: Yes, I think even for Rodney!
John (grudging): Maybe.

Heehee! So cute! I really really love Teyla by the end of S3. Rachel loses a lot of the stiltedness and becomes much more warm and sweet and I adore her. But yes, notice how John always goes out of his way to make Rodney the exception! He does it a lot, and it's so cute ♥ Nice try at misdirection there Shep! Oh boys.

This SGA novel is AWESOME. I swear, it's one long McShep fic! I assume it's going to lack porn at the end, but hey, I'm one happy camper. The page I'm on is killing me with the slash. An excerpt that gives me joy:

"Then Kavanagh had taken up more important question-asking time by apologizing for Rodney and Sheppard's behavior. Rodney had snorted derisively, but before he could comment on Kavanagh's behavior, Kolesnikova [female engineer on a mission with them] frowned at him and said in a whisper, "You and the Major talk to each other as if you are badly-raised eight year olds. Not everyone finds that attractive."

Rodney allowed himself a restrained sneer. "The fact that our professional communications function on a level that Kavanagh doesn't comprehend is not my problem." Focusing his annoyance on Kavanagh made it easier to pretend he wasn't worried.

Rodney had always hated relying on other people, who were inevitably fallible and wrong and usually stupid, but once they had arrived in Atlantis it had startled him how quickly he had come to rely on Sheppard. It had occasionally been difficult to reconcile the fact that the surfer/pretty boy type who qualified for MENSA but couldn't be bothered to join was the same person who had stalked and killed Genii in the city's corridors like they were cockroaches, could snap a man's neck, and was crazy enough to attack a super-Wraith with a belt knife. But Rodney was over that now."

Um. Just try to tell me that couldn't be directly from a McShep fic! *flailyhands* PERFECTION. I love the author's Rodney-voice (which is impressive!) and seriously, John and Rodney are the only characters getting any real development or focus. IT'S AWESOME.

Yay! I just received the Stargate Atlantis novel that I ordered from Amazon, "Reliquary," on many recommendations and the tip that it is FULL of McShep. Gleefully, I opened it to a random page and read in the middle of it. This is what I found (roughly paraphrased):

Rodney: "Oh stop it, you know if things were reversed you wouldn't stop trying until you saved me or you were dead, so quit arguing!"
John was oddly touched... etc. etc.

Okay, VERY roughly paraphrased, I swear the writing is far better than that, but guys. TOUCHED. ON A RANDOM PARAGRAPH ON A RANDOM PAGE.

I'm going to love this book *beams*

falling, years and years of it and not knowing half the time

Whenever I finish reading a quiet, thoughtful, beautiful story about John and Rodney and how much they care about and need each other, I then feel the desire to watch some canon along those same veins, but then... there isn't any! Not really. I've worn out the end of Tao of Rodney in service of this desire, but even that's not the same. With the Winchesters, I can finish any kind of fic and have my choice of canon to match the mood. Gutwrenching declarations of love? Check! Intense expressions of "I need you like a limb"? Check check! Oh Winchesters. I can't wait for the angstfest that is going to be the rest of the season.

I'm exhausted. Farscape and McShep fic and orgo studying kept me up too late. Again. How predictable am I?

(Title of this post, and the fic that kept me up too late, is from [livejournal.com profile] aesc's gorgeous twoparter, "Late Feet" and "I'm a Stranger Here Myself", the beginning of which can be found here. There, now this post has a purpose!)

Music requests; also, why SGA fanon > canon

I have a music request for you, my dear flist: does anyone have some Tom McRae albums they'd be willing to upload? I specifically would love the song "For the Restless" (thanks [livejournal.com profile] bionic!) ([livejournal.com profile] obsessive24 made the most gorgeous Firefly/Serenity vid to it, and I often open up the vid just to listen to the song) but I'd also love anything else anyone has to offer, because I've loved every song I've heard by him. Also, there are so many music vids made to his music, because it's so perfect for them (I desperately want to vid the song "A Day Like Today," which was in [livejournal.com profile] beerbad's Kara Thrace fanmix, because I can't listen to it without seeing some kind of visuals along with it - it *sounds* like a music video, if that makes any sense) and having more of him to listen to might aid me in future vidding song searches :) Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

And now, a few brief thoughts on my realization that I greatly prefer SGA fanon to canon. Specifically McShep fanon, but also all the little Atlantis details that have sprung up within all the stories I've read about them (and there have been MANY). Now, don't get me wrong - I love the show. I adore it, it makes me really really happy and it has a lot of rewatch value for me. But it doesn't take itself very seriously, so a lot of the nitty gritty, really thought provoking details that they could include just aren't. And so we write fic! I'm just gonna bullet point a few of the very common fanon tropes that I simply love and wish would be brought into the show.

John Sheppard's hair is utterly ridiculous, and Rodney likes to point this out with regularity. )

I swear there were many more, particularly one about Sheppard, but suffice to say that rarely is the show as emotionally fulfilling or fundamentally real as the fanfic. The exceptions are "The Return" (which had me BAWLING) and "The Tao of Rodney," which is simply the best episode of the entire series thus far, hands down. Oh, Rodney. ♥ I love the show, I do, but my love is kept burning by the incredible authors and stories in this fandom.

I got some great news about Trinity today, or rather my studying there. I went to talk to the Financial Aid office about my merit scholarship and how that was going to be applied. The cost of tuition for the program is significantly less than the amount of my scholarship, so I was wondering if I would get that extra money somehow to pay for housing. And it turns out I will! Whatever the difference is, I will get a CHECK for that amount, which will be around $7,000! And if I have costs beyond that (which I will) I can use Stafford loan money. On top of that, I'll have a good chunk of money from my research scholarship this summer, and my parents are obviously willing to contribute some. So basically, going to live and study for a year in DUBLIN is a financial RELIEF on my family. How incredible is that? Occasionally, life is awesome. :D

So, I think in the grand scheme of things... we're good, aren't we?

Guess what I did last night? I beat the mayor of Lancaster, PA at poker! It was incredibly surreal. Oxfam held a Charity Game Night Gala to raise money, and we asked the mayor to come! His secretary said "he would try," so I was like, pffft... yeah right. And then he was THERE. I wish there had been a better turn out to the event to be a bit more impressive, but he was very gracious and nice and thanked us for caring about people. And gave a donation. And the event itself raised $800!! All that goes to a local organization that helps the homeless in Lancaster. So all in all it was quite a success, and we're very pleased. Yay Oxfam!

I bought the season 2 Stargate Atlantis official companion because I am totally a whore for this show :D It's a fun read, with comments from all the cast and producers and whatnots about each episode and character and suchforth. The most disappointing thing I came across, however, was this: Joe Flanigan was originally planning on writing what he calls a "McKay and Sheppard story," but because the idea was too similar to two SG-1 episodes, they went an entirely different direction and what we got was... Epiphany. You know, the one with the meditating space-bimbo and John in a beard chewing on hay and, oh yeah, MALP-on-a-stick! Booo. I do however find it fun that this episode led indirectly to my most favoritest McShep moment of the whole season - because John had the experience with the meditating crazy Ascended wannabes, Elizabeth assigned him to help Rodney meditate, which led to the scene in John's quarters at the end of Tao of Rodney, which, yaknow, ♥♥&hearts. So there is a silver lining! *laughs*

On a general note, I feel really disconnected from fandom right now. My extent of livejournal interaction is scrolling through my flist to get the gist, because I don't have time for any more. I have approximately 40 tabs of Supernatural fic open, and have neither the time nor the inclination to read any of them. I do read at least a SGA fic or two every day. I feel obscurely guilty about that :-/ This damned SPN hiatus needs to be over, now! But I really do miss you guys and miss being really involved... I just can't fix it right now. I'm sorry and I love you all, I really do. And to all my friends going through tough times - my heart is with you, and I wish you the very very best. *hugs everyone*

I've decided to start giving new McShep names to the SGA episodes, in the following manner:

Vague spoilers for various season 2 eps )

Heehee!

I realize that I'm doing what I do with all ensemble shows - I watch them once through, enjoying and appreciating all the storylines. But then I latch on to a ship and start rewatching specifically for their moments. It happens with various speeds and orders, but that's the general idea! With Queer as Folk it was Brian/Justin; Battlestar Galactica, Kara/Lee; Firefly, Simon and River; Torchwood, Jack/Ianto. Supernatural doesn't count because every second on screen is my OTP *g* Which is why I've got every second of every episode practically committed to memory! :D

What I really love the most about John and Rodney's relationship is how John doesn't let Rodney's personality get to him. At all. I mean, I guess this is obvious, but basically John recognizes that Rodney's many personality flaws are not in any way personal attacks, so he just lets them roll off his back like so much rain water. He never tells Rodney to shut up unless there's something big at stake - any other time he either simply pokes fun at Rodney or smiles with fond amusement. John never crushes Rodney - in fact, he's his biggest believer. In turn, Rodney accepts John as an equal and more - he respects John, thoroughly. *squees quietly into fists* Ahem. I'm sorry. I was attempting to be all serious! Basically, they both have very unique personalities that cause them problems for different reasons... in essence, they're both loners that have found an unlikely matching puzzle piece in the other. They're a perfect example of opposites attract.

And I heart them like CRAZY *beams*

Look! New icon! John holds the gun, Rodney holds the lifesigns detector, and they fix every problem - TOGETHER! \o/

So there's a rumor going around that it's ANOTHER birthdaytastic day.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] monkiedude!!! You are just a sweetheart. I'm so glad I got to meet you at Wincon, even though it was briefer than I would have liked! You're so cute and fun and witty and generous and all around AWESOME. Oh and talented! Uber super duper talented. I ♥ you like whoa, and I'm so glad we're friends! I hope you have an awesome birthday! *hugs*

HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] cathybites!!! You are such a fun, enthusiastic person! I loved meeting you at Wincon as well - I particularly adored your enthusiasm about your karaoke, although I only got to participate in the small-scale version! You are just such a personality, very outgoing and upbeat and personable. It's been a lot of fun having you on my flist! I hope you have a fantastic birthday too! *hugs*

It is also the birthday of one Jensen Ackles. All I can say is I hope Jared celebrated with him appropriately - i.e., by becoming Jensen's sex slave for a day. *nodnod* And by giving him another extremely thoughtful and personal gift like he did last year. Oh boys. *draws hearts* Happy birthday, Jennybean! I heart you muchly.

I just read an epic (30k words) McShep tale in which they have a child through an Ancient device that takes the DNA of the two people that turn it on and make a BABY. That's a plant! - It... is?

It's snowing again! Goodness me. About two or three inches since this morning. It's very pretty, but since it's Sunday, there's no one doing anything about it on the paths, so walking to class tomorrow is going to be a joy :P And my car better not get trapped in again - I only got it out yesterday!

[livejournal.com profile] darksylvia - I went to see the Justin King Band! And they were AMAZING!! Thank you so much for the recommendation! Seriously, everyone, these guys are fantastic, but especially Justin King himself - he's *ridiculous* on a guitar, seriously. He plays this weird way where he's plucking at the strings only on the neck and it sounds so COOL. If you want to see a video of him doing it, go to THEIR WEBSITE and go to the media section. Fucking awesome, I swear. They also have a few songs that stream on the website. They played two of them last night, and they were so much more blood-pumping and intense live. They're amazing live, seriously. And it was this nice small, intimate venue so we were right there, and it was just... yeah. Awesome. And by the way, Justin King is HOT. No really. He looks totally different from the pictures on the website - his head is shaven now, just a half inch or so left, and he's smoldering. Holy guh. And guys, I swear to god he looked at me like 10 times while I was singing along to the songs I knew, and I went splodey. Seriously. Just a completely rockin good time, and having him to stare at rounded out the whole experience :D

Actually, here, I'll embed the video here. Watch it! He's awesome.

So that was a really fun night! There were three other acts too. The first was a young guy (he can't have been older than me) just playing acoustic guitar and singing. Layne and I were plotting to go backstage and seduce him afterwards, because he was so cute. A total emo boy, with floppy hair in his eyes, and his music sounded exactly like Dashboard Confessional. In fact, he did a cover of Hands Down! Hee. Very pleasant to listen to. Then there was a really fun band called The Secrecy. They had two girls playing violin, and one of them sang backup vocals, in addition to the usual guitar/bass/drums, so that was a unique touch, and they were very good. Then after Justin King was a band called Kingsfoil ("That's a plant!" says I. Layne and Rob look at me strangely. "It... is?" they say, eyeing me askance. "Um!" I stutter, "Maybe? No? I could be lying!" Then I came home and Wikied it - turns out Kingsfoil is indeed a plant....... in Lord of the Rings. It's another name for Athelas, a plant Aragorn uses to heal someone. And that, my friends, is why I am a ginormous geek.) which wasn't so awesome, so we left before they were done.

Then we went to Layne's to hang out for a while, and I had Jack and coke for the first time. How exciting! It was really yummy, actually. Mm mm. :D

I have been reading lots of awesome McShep fic \o/ And I just watched 1x03 Hide and Seek, in which John pushes Rodney off a balcony and they are generally twelve and I die of love. It amazes me how immediately they clicked. So. Much. Love. :D

The lovely [livejournal.com profile] crystal_lily kindly pointed out that there's an SG-1 episode that features the entire Atlantis cast, which i did not know! I downloaded it, and Rodney just said this about John, after John finished making fun of him to one of the SG-1 guys:

"We're actually, uh, we're quite close." (with an amused, affectionate smile)

And then I put my hands over my face and made sounds that could have been laughter, crying, or whimpers. Or perhaps all three.

How come you get to be Mr. Fantastic?

I've downloaded and listened to a couple season 2 SGA commentaries by Martin Gero (writer, very funny), Joe Flanigan, and David Hewlett. They are all *hilarious* together, and Joe and David banter adorably. Awww. The ones I've listened to have been for Conversion and Lost Boys, and I just died of laughter for both of them. There are so many little gems, but a couple yummy ones...

  • David mentions that he needs to get some slo-mo for his character, and Joe says "Slo-mo of you and Paul running to meet each other in a field?" HEE.

  • In The Lost Boys, there's that scene where John and Rodney have a conversation in a field, and when it starts, Martin kinda cuts off the hilarity and says: "There's a kind of... there's a warmth between you two guys that comes out - I mean, not to get all serious for a second - but you guys really do have a very nice chemisry on camera." And of course Joe and David are like "oh yes, that's hatred!" but I love that Martin points it out because it is REAL and TANGIBLE and, I mean, Rodney/John was not intentional by any means, I don't think, but Joe and David just work so *well* on screen together, that it just happened, organically, you know? I love it. Love love :D

  • They even talk about assbabies! Martin: "I've said on the record... if the world was cruel enough, to allow Brad and Robert [producers or something] to have a child, it would be David Hewlett as Dr. Rodney McKay." Hee.

There's so much more, but you all need to buy the S2 DVDs when they come out and watch the commentaries :)

Some scattered thoughts on SGA 3x20 First Strike )

Overall I really liked this episode a lot :D It was intense and climactic feeling, and I just enjoyed it a lot. I'm so sad I'm done watching! :( But as soon as Rob and I finished the finale, we went back and watched the SGA pilot! *laughs* It was so fun watching our darlings in the beginning - god, could I love John any more? No. None more. And I love how Rodney and Elizabeth warm up to John immediately, even while others are a little wary of him. I did keep expecting to see Ronon, haha.

Baaaaasically, I love this show. ♥

I had a fun night out at a couple parties that ended on a really sour note. In summary, ARGH BOYS. I ranted (with some really spectacularly bad typing - apparently tipsy + emo = bad coordination for me) at some friends and they were kind enough to talk me down, and now I'm much calmer. You know what else helped with that? SGA. I have now finished season 3, and *flail* I love this show. I reeeeeeally do. Then I went back and watched some favorite scenes/moments of John and Rodney's in particular, and now I'm much more even keeled.

I think I'll stick with fictional boys that love each other, mmkay? It's much less complicated.

    Goodnight. ♥
