I CAN HAS MY IPOD!!!

I had no hope whatsoever, but because I would hate myself if I didn't, I went to the bar that I was drunkest at on Friday, and asked if they had my iPod. AND THEY DID!!!!!!!!! WUT! This does not happen in real life! :DDDDDD I HAS MY BABY AGAIN! I christened it by listening to It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Deathwish at top volume on my way home. I AM SO HAPPYYYYYYY!!!! :D :D :D

My emotional dependence on this little piece of technology is a little ridic. On my walk home, I wanted to listen to music, but COULDN'T, and I almost cried. BUT NOW I HAS MY BABY! Bweeeee.

Today I also spoke to an awesome professor who was here to give a talk from the University of Rochester about my project, and he had some great ideas. Now we're on a completely different tack! Hah! That's what happens when you have NO IDEA about the field you jump into, and then talk to an expert. But we're learning! It's good! I'm excited!

I'm also fucking exhausted. My head is throbbing. I'm gonna do some reading, then SLEEP.

I HAS MY IPOD!!!! :DDDDDDDDD

Oy.

What an interesting day.

I LOST MY IPOD! D: I think it was in my purse when I went out last night, and... it wasn't when I got home. Stolen? Fallen out? Who knows, but gone. :((((( I had a 30 GB 5G, and it was PERFECT for me, functional and big enough with no bells and whistles. Now my options are a stupid iPod touch that's tiny AND expensive (I don't need that huge screen! JUST GIMME MY MUSIC) or an also tiny and still expensive Nano, or an ENORMOUS and correspondingly EXPENSIVE Classic. AUGH DNW!!!! I'm so angry at myself. Why didn't I just take it out of my purse before I went to the bar?! ARGH.

Because I was looking for my iPod, I was late leaving to pick up [livejournal.com profile] angel726 for the Cobra meet and greet, so I was speeding. AND I GOT A SPEEDING TICKET! Making me LATER, hahahaha! ///o\\\ The cop caught me doing 83 in a 70... oops? He took pity (also probably saw I've never gotten a ticket before) and only smacked me with doing 75 in a 70, but now I have to show up to court in DETROIT and FML.

So basically, today cost me roughly $300 in the long run. AWESOME. /o\ At least I just got paid? :D?

The Cobra show (which was really a Boys Like Girls show, wut) was FILLED with people in black and neon pink or neon cyan. I felt seriously weird in my distressed red tee. Meet and Greet was kind of awkward, and Gabe-less (too sick? Ryland said hungover, but I couldn't tell if he was yanking my chain!), but still very nice. Ryland is tall! And lovely! I told him I got a speeding ticket and he said he was just glad I made it there alive, lolol. It was such an awkward setup and I didn't have anything to say really so I didn't talk to Suarez or Nate much. I did tell VickyT her jacket was AWESOME, because it was a military style deal very reminiscent of Black Parade. Then we got our photo and hustled on our way. I yawned my way through Versa Emerge, The Rocket... something? what?, and The Maine, and then it was Cobras!! Who were awesome and exciting, but the lighting was so shitty. The theme: "Let's Not Light The Performers!" Uhhkay. Whatever, Cobras, awesome, fangs up!

Then we left, because hahaha Boys Like Girls? No.

And now I am exhausted and in bed and watching White Collar. I have plans to see The Men Who Stare At Goats with Dave tomorrow, YAY. Aaaand scene.

Some variation of the plague has caught me. Woe. :( Just in time for two tests and a concert, yaye! >:(

I just... wanted to share my misery. idk. It's not the flu, I don't have a fever and I'm still quite functional. But my head feels swollen and gross and my throat hurts persistently and it all just sucks. It would suck less if I could curl up under my new comforter and watch Buffy while drinking tea, but I feel constantly compelled to study, since I have TWO TESTS in the next three days. WHAT. Hate. :(

Castle was win and love and awesome, AS USUAL. Maybe not the most hilarious, but always compelling. I love the whole team soooo much. Only complaint: needs moar Ryan&Esposito bein boyfriends. ♥

I made my first microarray today! And it didn't look all that great. But it didn't fail completely either, so I'm going to change some steps and weeee'll see!

I get to have lunch with Dave tomorrow! Now that the air is cleared between us, I am missing him all the time again. Need moar snuggles. Snuggles might be limited what with me having the plague though. :(

Today in fandom, RAY TORO WAS ADORABLE OMG. The song titles! The sheer glee! They are SO IN LOVE with this record, and I CAN'T WAIT TO BE IN LOVE WITH IT TOO. Eeeee! *GIMMEHANDS*

This is a totally pointless post. I will leave you with this, because it left my head pounding after I dared to laugh at it.

Why are the misspellings STILL HILARIOUS?!? Ahahahaha.

You guys, I love my baby band. *______*

(Background: Drive A are a new band out of LA, and I've been listening to them nonstop for 2 months. I've also been following Jason Nott, the guitarist, on Twitter and we've chatted a couple times.)

How Drive A stole my heart! )

Let me introduce you to Drive A!

Left to right: Taylor who always makes ridic faces in photos, Jason looking at the wrong camera <3333, Cody being GORGEOUS, and Bruno being too cool to smile. UGH I LOVE THEMMMM. Also, you can see that my purse was falling off my shoulder, and JASON HELD IT UP. HEEE WHAT. The hearts in my eyes are truly enormous.

As for video evidence of their awesome, well, the Fillmore is a DICK because it has a STILL PHOTOS ONLY POLICY, what the shit is that. I recorded 3 minutes of the first song before I got shut down. :( :( :( But it's a good video, and you can see them rocking out and being fucking badasses and I love them. ♥___♥

I know some other band might have played, maybe, you know, The Used or some little band like that, but I'll post about that later. :) I just wanted to flail about my new baby band, whom I adore WITH ALL OF MY LITTLE HEART. Suffice to say I had a fucking awesome time, and it was so cool to have [livejournal.com profile] candidlily and [livejournal.com profile] angel726 with me, and I am a happy happy camper. :D

Oh and LISTEN TO DRIVE A!!!! Their album is only $7 on iTunes! myspace.com/drivea and youtube.com/drivearocks ! GO GO GO! :D

I am posting instead of studying for an exam. Ain't it always the truth?

Well. I've been studying for most of today, but I don't really feel prepared. That's mostly because this class has been pretty poorly taught, rather unclear and kind of rambling all over the place without pauses to summarize important concepts. It's just drug mechanism after drug mechanism, and somehow we're supposed to pull general principles from that. Blah.

The exam is tomorrow at 1 PM. I only went into lab briefly today after class and came home at 12:30, so one would think that I've gotten loads of studying done! But because there's no problem sets or practice exam, it's nearly impossible to focus my studying. ARGH. I just want this to be over, because then I WILL HAS A [livejournal.com profile] candidlily, who is staying with me for the weekend, YAY! And on Saturday we're going to see THE USED and DRIVE A!!!!! with [livejournal.com profile] angel726, so I am SUPER STOKED for that. \o/

I've seen a few scarce SPN reaction posts, and from these I REALLY WANT TO SEE THE EPISODE OMG!!!!, but why are so many of you silent?! Sad. I was hoping for you to distract me with your squeeing while I was studying. :(

Some Glee thoughts: I used to be mostly ambivalent about Cory Monteith's voice, but now I'm fully on the side of STOP RUINING LEA MICHELE'S SONGS!!!!! I've had most of the Glee songs on repeat for a couple weeks now, and I love most of them (Take a Bow is still a favorite, as is Somebody to Love and, surprisingly, the Halo mashup), but it's gotten to the point where I cringe every time Finn cuts in to Rachel's triumphant, crystal clear warbling. Particularly on Somebody to Love and No Air. Why can't they let some of the other guys sing? Artie's got a great voice! And Kurt hasn't even gotten a chance yet, nor has Puck! Sigh. (And on that note, Puck was so charmingly douchey for an ep or two, but now he's basically a backup dancer. Learn to balance your characters, Glee!)

And speaking of characters, Glee is still really... kind of failing, in depth and consistency. Interestingly, the best character growth has been Quinn, in my opinion. She's still underhanded and sneaky, but she also has moments of startling vulnerability, and I find myself adoring her. Which is weird, since the idea of the "virgin cheerleader" was so deeply obnoxiously done in the pilot. But kudos to Dianna for that. Despite all of the fail, though, I find myself getting sucked in - I don't know, it's something about people expressing themselves ~WITH MUSIC~ that just yanks at my heartstrings. I rewatch a lot of the musical numbers... a lot, and subsequently some of the scenes right around them, and like. Idk! The kids obviously have a lot of heart, and it's not THEIR fault the writing is inconsistent and trying to find its comfortable middle ground between TOTALLY WACKY and actual drama. I am warming up to the idea that I might really care about this show eventually, but it's going to take a lot more development to get there. Luckily, with how big a hit it is, it will probably be around for a couple years and will get that chance.

One of the things I am most pleased with is that Rachel has been toned down/modulated, giving me more leeway to unabashedly LOVE THE SHIT OUT OF HER VOICE, oh my GOD. Her voice is like sweet, soothing love being made to my ears. Mmmmmmmmm. She's a great performer too, and while I do love the recording of a song, her physical performance on the show often brings TEARS to my eyes. She's also super stunning in a refreshingly unique way, and basically I ♥ Lea!!

And randomly, I kind of completely adore Brittany, the blonde Cheerio who is not Quinn. I noticed her background dancing from the very beginning - I think she's by far the best dancer of the girls (the contrast with Tina in Single Ladies was, I'm afraid, laughable) and my eyes always seem to be drawn to her. The actress also just seems to be a sweetheart, from the adorable stuff I catch her doing in the background of busy shots or during group numbers. I am particularly charmed by her and Puck holding hands during Somebody to Love. What! I have a totally random girlcrush, idek.

And I really wish Mr Shue would actually let Mercedes sing in a big performance number. She's AMAZING!!! And so spunky. ♥

Looking back at this list, I like that the female characters are the ones that seem strongest and most likeable to me (and this is speaking relatively, since everyone fails pretty hard quite often, if they have lines). That's at least one area I can give the show a sort of thumbs up on! (The massive, glaring exception is Terri and her sister. Can I just say: UGGGGHHHHHHH.)

And randomly: does anyone else find it kind of annoying that the show has ruined the simple word "glee"? I used to use it all the time (e.g., *wriggles with glee!*) but now it feels like people will think I'm making a pun about the show or something, when I'm totally not. SIGH! My life is SO VERY HARD!

Obviously this post HAD to be made. It was so much more important than studying. OBVIOUSLY!

:P

I DYED MY HAIR! :D

I've had the dye (a "more natural" temporary Clairol dye) sitting around for a couple weeks, but I haven't found the time to actually do it. This past week I've been feeling a bit bummed and down on myself, so I decided tonight, fuck it, I'm going to stop reading this horrible science paper and make myself a redhead! Soooo I DID!

I've never dyed my hair before, ever. I guess I've just been too chicken. But one of my roommates now dyes her hair all the time, so I felt confident with her there to keep an eye on me. It was messy but fun, and now my head is a sort of deeper, richer color, darker with a strong flavor of red, though more purple/cooler toned than orange. I LOVE IT!!

Before and after! )

Oh, and because y'all wanted to see, here's some pictures of me in costume at the Renaissance Faire, plus a few others! It was such a fun day with my wonderful cousins.

I even got to see the brilliant Rogue Blades! )

It's 2:40 AM! Today has been woefully unproductive! I haven't seen Dollhouse OR Merlin, which are both supposed to be amazing! CLEARLY MY LIFE IS SAD.

Look, a post that's NOT about Nicholas! \o/

So yesterday was a kind of insane day. I had class from 9 to 11 (and spent a lot of it Tweeting about how I hated the back of Nicholas's head and hoped he wouldn't talk to me after class - he didn't, but rather snuck away like a coward \o/), and then I went straight to lab... where I proceeded to do an experiment for over 10 hours. YEAH YOU HEARD ME! I didn't leave until ~9:30 PM! And I was working that WHOLE time. It was a little surreal - I forgot to bring lunch, so I had, like, an apple, but I couldn't leave the lab, so I didn't eat anything real until about 6 when my labmate forced a frozen meal on me! I was doing this big involved experiment that has, like, 7 steps, one of which ran over the night before, and the last few of which had to happen in the cold room, aka a refrigerator that I had to sit in and operate a pipet in for 20 minutes at a time. So freaking cold! At the end of all this, I basically got 96 data points for two different proteins with several conditions, and THEY LOOKED GREAT!! I was so relieved and thrilled and proud because no one in my lab had done anything like this before, so I was kind of flying on vague recommendations, a slightly related literature paper, and my own instincts (which are not terribly well honed after only 3 months in biochem!). But everything worked amazingly and this is a great starting point for an important set of experiments that I'm collaborating with a couple of my labmates on. It's all just very nerdily exciting and I am happy that my crazy day paid off!

Unfortunately, I have a test tomorrow, and yesterday was obviously totally lost to studying... so that's what I'm doing now. /o\ I'm getting a decent handle on this stuff though, and it's only 10 PM, so I'm gonna be fiiine! I caught a power nap around 9 PM when I just put my head down on my keyboard and slept for about 15 minutes, to the lilting tunes of Linkin Park blasting in my ear, ha. But now I have plenty of energy and I'm charging ahead! Woo!

I just started a paragraph about how I'm ~SO BEHIND~ on TV, but um, I'm only behind on two shows (Merlin and Castle) and tomorrow night I'll definitely have some time to catch up, SO. STFU, Anne! Ha. On that note though, I've seen a lot of people recommend that you get a hobby during grad school, some activity that takes your mind off your work and during which is decisively NOT science time. I think television/fandom is that hobby for me. And you all know I don't mean that in the potato-y way - I mean it in the watching shows with characters that thrill and amuse and sadden me, and discussing them with other lovely folks kind of way. You are my destresser! And I am so grateful to have you, and all this darling TV, to keep me sane. ♥

That said, this week's Big Bang Theory was not my favorite. Yay, let's manipulate Penny and try to make her into a more mild and tolerable person because WE ARE MEN AND WE GET EXACTLY WHAT WE WANT. >:( Sheldon, I know you fail all the time, but that was a particularly bad note to strike THIS WEEK of all weeks. And Howard and Raj's story was mildly funny (that was the most attractive Howard's ever been to me, I must say) but AGAIN WITH THE EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN! I'm glad they're presented as failing utterly (as always!) because otherwise... raaage. (That girl was totally hot, though. Ha.)

My favorite blog right now (which has entries back to SEVEN YEARS AGO, WHAT, so LOTS of backcatalog to go through) is Pipeline, which is hilariously a pharmaceutical chemist's blog. It's incredibly well-written and intelligent and informative, and I've learned a lot about the drug industry (namely, uh, I want no part of it?) and it's just been a great/terrible procrastination tool because I feel like I'm LEARNING while I'm reading it - just not things I can use on my test tomorrow! :P

Obviously this is a procrastination tool too, so I'm going to GO AWAY NOW!
exsequar: (Castle charms your pants off)
I loved this week's Castle SO SO SO MUCH. Ryan and Esposito are the most hilarious, wondrous boyfriends evaaaar. This happened after they sort of (but not really) kicked butt:
Esposito: "You were on FIRE, Ryan."
Ryan: "New nickname: Iceposito!" *manly shoulder thwap*
alksjflkjsd HAHAHA. Booooys. I always loved them in season 1, in all their random 5 seconds of gloriousness, but it seems the show has recognized their asset this season, yay. :D And Castle and Beckett just continue to be made of win and puppies! (And occasional quiet moments of gentle heartbreak!) Such a gleeful show.

And BIG BANG THEORY! One word: EEEEEEEE! \o/

I have made a decision. I will promise to myself to get my huge NSF fellowship application finished by November 2nd, and then I will reward myself with BOONDOCK SAINTS 2!!!!! Motherfucking YAY, you guys. Every time I see my poster on my wall I squeal into my fists. MOAR MACMANUSES!!!

So the new Paramore album came out! :D I didn't have any particular expectations either way, but I liked the preview so I bought it on iTunes, and um. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. ?! It's much, much better than Riot! in my opinion, much more consistent in quality, and you can really tell they're growing up. There are a couple quiet, gorgeous pieces, particularly Misguided Ghosts which has quickly become my favorite. Hayley's obviously been consciously working on her vocals, because in that song she's got an almost delicate quality, which I've never heard her manage before - her voice is usually very throaty and hits words hard, but in this song she's sometimes very nimble and gentle and it's beautiful. I also love the lyrics: "We are just misguided ghosts, traveling endlessly, the ones we trusted the most, pushed us far away, and there's no one road, we should not be the same, but I'm just a ghost." The guitar work is very pretty too. Idk I just love that song!! And then there's several completely solid and catchy slabs of pop-punk - Ignorance is phenomenal, and Playing God is super catchy ("Next time you point a finger I might have to bend it back or break it, break it off. Next time you point a finger, I'll point you to the mirror!"). There really isn't a song on the album I don't like, which is NOT true of either of their other albums. Well done, kids!

Science was VERY strange today, so we'll have to see what the hell is up with that when I redo it. Could have just been a fluke, or I may have to reevaluate my entire perspective on this particular platform, blah.

I ran into Nicholas at the grocery store. Um, AWKWARD. I think he's annoyed with me for breaking up with him, but not directly dealing with it, and idk I'm just uncomfortable. I do know breaking up with him was entirely the right thing though. Sigh. Debbie had boy troubles tonight too. BOYS YOU FAIL. >:(

Girls do not fail though! The four roomies and I sat down and watched a couple Big Bang Theory episodes. It's so relaxing and stress-free and I love that we can all share it. ♥

Now I'm actually going to go to bed at a decent hour, weird! Night loves. ♥

I've uploaded my only two full videos, and I think they're pretty fab. I have the first performance of 40 Steps with the full band, and I think the first performance of I'm Yours Tonight, or is that wrong? Anyhow, here they are!

exsequar: (Girlyrock - TAI - Bill adorable)
I have arrived home from the AP Fall Ball pretty much intact! My stomach is reeeally unhappy with the no real food + two beers + a cigarette + a lot of jumping and sweating and singing thing, but other than that I'm content.

I got Meet & Greet with the Academy boys! Well, sorta - [livejournal.com profile] angel726 bought our tickets and got M&G cause she's in Santi's Little Helpers, but I did not because I am not. We did not realize this in advance. Naomi, Chiz's lovely wife, was giving out the M&G wristbands and we explained our situations, and she said she'd see, so we stood around and looked sad until she gave me a wristband. Score! Second time I have totally mooched off a friend to get into M&G (last time was Panic, hee). Yay!

The boys were SO LOVELY. We talked to Carden first, who I must say is looking damn fine with his short locks. He gave us hugs hello because it was the first day of tour, haha. I told him I was going to grad school in Ann Arbor and he asked what school was there, and when I said UM he said "Wolverines, right?" and when I laughed and said yes he said "It's like a pop quiz!" Hee. Then we found Butcher wandering aorund without anyone to talk to (?!) and he was lovely and sweet and talked about how he spends his free time on tour (painting or not doing anything, generally) and how they were going to play 40 Steps with the full band for the first time (:D!).

Thennn we got ourselves a BILL BECKETT OMG. How is he real? HOW IS HE REAL? I don't really comprehend this beanpole of a person who leans down and gazes intently at you as you speak! He's sort of stoic and pleasant and a little odd and I adore him, sigh sigh sigh. He has the most ridiculous and ridiculously ADORABLE new haircut, please see photo behind the cut. We commented on it and he said something about it being like time travel, and we ran with it like it was back to the 50s or something, and he was like "But it's not like going back in time. It's going forward, to the future. This is what you're gonna see in a few decades." And I was just like lololol Billiam! <333 I mentioned that the first time I saw them play was with Cobras and FOB on the HCT, and that I had no idea who they were but after that they became the soundtrack of my summer, yadda yadda, and then I asked if they were going to tour again with Cobras! And he said, you know, we've toured with them a *lot*, and we kind of needed a break. So I said "Too much Gabe?" And he replied, "You can never have too much Gabe." HEEEEEE. (omgnotsosekritbandomOTPlskdjflskdjf) And then he went on to say that he's got an "itch" to tour with them again so THAT BETTER HAPPEN. Eeeee omg. &hisfaaace;

Then we found ourselves a Sisky, and he liked my shirt because "I like guns!" Oh Siskybiz! <3 His hair is longer than it's been in a while, but apparently it was longer while he was recovering from his tragic hand injury, like he had a full on hobo beard and hair, but he cut it off, sad. I asked if he's going to grow the full on afro back and he said he's thinking about it. He was adorable and everything I expected of Sisky. Then we chatted with Chiz, who is lovely and Aussie and informed me (when I told him I'm getting my PhD basically in medical research) that someone published a vaccine for HIV today? Idk, I have to go look that up! But he, too, was lovely. All of them are excited to be back on tour! It was really nice to get to chat with them one on one in a really relaxed situation, I like that setup a whole lot. That was definitely my favorite part of the evening!

I have photos with all of them, so I'm gonna share them here. You have to look at Bill's haircut, omg. ♥

The Academy Is adorable! )

So after M&G we got in before doors and got barrier. However, we ended up next to these girls who were bitches before anyone else even arrived. They were shoving and trying to get all of them squeezed onto barrier. You Me At Six started up after a little while and they were British and quite entertaining! Buuut the bitchy girls were being horrible, one in particular, and just SHOVING, really fucking hard. I tried to hang on to the barrier (I had gotten turned so only one arm was on there) but one particularly vicious push dislodged me. It was disconcertingly like being washed out to sea. I ended up 4-5 people back, and it was actually better without that horrible, horrible person leaping on my back. (I actually, trufax hate her. She is a selfish obnoxious tool of the worst kind and I kind of hope she dies in a moshpit one day. Ahem.) I had a good time in there for the rest of that set, but it's just... not my thing to be mushed in a sea of people, *especially* by myself, so I escaped without further ado and hung out at the bar to the side, hilariously between two pairs of parents. The bartender was hot and funny and I had fun flirting with him a little, and also buying beers and bumming a cigarette from him just so he'd light it (yeah, I'm SO SUBTLE), so I passed the time with that and texting with Tabby (♥!). Some other bands played? Idk. The Secret Handshake was energetic but way too electronica for me (I happened to meet the singer guy afterwards - he's REALLY FREAKING HOT, too bad I didn't like your music dude!) and Every Avenue was decent, whatever.

Then it was ACADEMY TIME!!! They opened with Crowded Room, which, random! But then was BLACK MAMBA EEE, and Classifieds and MIDTOWN and BIG MESS OMG and About a Girl and Forever Young and I'm Yours Tonight (which is really good live!) and 40 STEPS (with the WHOLE BAND, I have a video!) and they closed with SLOW DOWN which is William and Gabe's song, omg my heart. <3 It felt really really short, and I didn't have the best view, but I danced my heart out and I adore them.

Just two photos... )

I'm watching a bit of my videos and they sound MUCH better then they actually did live! My camera magically filters out all the loud vibratey stuff and just carries through the actual music, which is amazing. The sound at this venue suuuucked - you felt the music more than heard it. But yes, I have great videos and will be sure to share!

And I think that's all the recapping I have energy for. I'm exhausted! I'm so behind on my flist AND TV (no spoilers for Supernatural, Dollhouse, Bones, OR Glee please - holy crap, need to catch up) but I am just drained. I also may be getting sick (come on body, fight it off!). So it's bed time, already way too late.

Yay bandboys! *flops*
